After watching just about all of the OVAs released in the 1980s, these are the ones I rated 6, meaning I consider them to be decent.

Some are franchises, so only one entry per franchise.

A stack anime series and movies (mostly Ghibli) that have a female protagonist from my completed anime list.

Some anime OVAs dating back to this time, with not many movies included.

I initially created the stack for personal use, but decided to make it public. I hope it can be useful to someone.

Kick back with your choice of inebriant or lack thereof and have some fun watching action heroes battle it out with all sorts of weapons, explosives, superpowers and machines. OVAs aren't usually very long so you don't even need to commit. You don't need to think too much and don't take it so seriously. These shows are all about having a good time and maybe some laughs along the way.

Featuring little to no dialogue and/or characters and the experience is carried by the music and/or visual atmosphere.

I remember going to the video store, browsing the shelves, and picking out a movie based on the box art alone. I'd look at the front, I'd look at the back, and more often than not I'd put it back on the shelf. Occasionally there'd be something like Ghost in the Shell or Ninja Scroll, and I knew I just had to rent it, or more accurately get my parents to rent it.

This isn't just a list of movies that were available on VHS at my local video store, this is also a list of movies that I would have rented had they been there. They have box art and synopsis appeal, regardless of the reality contained within.

This is my virtual VHS store, where we say Japanimation and we don't stock TV shows unless they're only a few episodes long. I hope you like violence and nudity. Things here also generally skew older, keeping with the VHS theme.

Before the likes of Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon conquering the kids in the west, it was actually Akira that opened the door and made people realize that the cartoons coming from Japan weren't what you would expect from Disney or your TV channels.
A huge flood of VHS tapes came showing animations with mature themes, absurd plots, and enough graphic sex and violence to make parents freak out... what a glorious time!
They don't make cartoons like this anymore.

This is a comprehensive list with stuff from very good to very trashy, but all in the same spirit.
Some early 00's also included.

ps: I also recommend, but can't include here, the second Violence Jack movie, A Kite and Mezzo Forte.

Recommended for older viewers that want an alternative to shows and movies set at Anime High School. Casts in these anime are primarily over 18 and most are intended more for adult audiences, even if they're silly or light-hearted in nature. (Big obvious exception: Dragon Ball Z.)

Lesser known "retro" anime that I enjoyed, mostly OVA's.

A mix of 80's & 90's ova series that I have seen.
Some great, some not so much... you be the judge of what's good though.

Series which played on the various Encore and Starz channels. Ordered alphabetically by their English titles.

Animaze was a company that was formed in 1992 by Kevin Seymour and was in-work up until about 2008 following a closure in 2010 after Seymour had passed away. Animaze, outside of anime, has also dubbed many video games! Regardless, as follows are the anime that Animaze have dubbed! Hokuto no Ken and Super Dimension Century Orguss are excluded because they did not dub the full show!

For some odd reason Animaze decided to dub Orguss 02 instead of finishing the orginal show.
