I felt like this anime needed another review. I'll try to keep my fanboying down to a minimum but bear in mind that I love this show.
It's hard to describe Patalliro to those who haven't seen it. It was absolutely ground-breaking for its time for being the first ever shounen-ai on Japanese TV. I would say it's a psychedelic adventure involving a Japanese, gay James Bond and a wacky, time-travelling ‘Scrappy-Doo type’ prankster dictator who solve apocalyptic diamond theft mysteries. Hmm. I really needed a second review on this damn movie. Where can you start with the absurdness that is the
Patalliro anime? In a flurry of quick hitting gags and 70s gay (?) drama you realize one thing-If you are not Japanese, you will never be able to pin down half the cultural references. And an interesting relationship with Nazi imagery can ruin the series for some. For sure a movie for the seasoned anime viewer and being familiar with who the characters are, I'd say not seeing the whole TV show won't take away from seeing this uh...48 minute special. I recently finished the Patalliro anime and immediately wanted to watch this movie because i really liked the show. This movie serves as a continuation of the events of the anime and I really liked that the plot taking advantage of a certain character that appeared during the first episodes of the anime and will be important throughout the film (this review will be spoiler-free so feel free to read it).
I was also quite surprised that the intro song was made by the mangaka Mineo Maya himself and the truth is that it really captures the essence of the manga and the animation and artwork ... |
