Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa

Both focus on and question the social effects of science and technology: can we say "progress" is always a good thing? Both anime investigate relationships between aspiring astronauts and their anti-technology counterparts, the main argument being that the money used to build extravagant spaceships could be used to feed, clothe and shelter the needy. In The Wings of Honneamise, however, the relationship feels much more interesting. Overall, if enjoyed the political aspects of Planetes then you're sure to like this too. 

Similar themes of peace. Or maybe nose thumbing at military Hawkism and ruthlessness. In both the main champ is supported by an old guy against the wishes of high military leaders. Maybe similar comedy styles too.  

The two finest examples of hand-animated realism in anime. 

Both based on story about first space flights to unknown above. But freedom have much more deeper story and character development.  

If you watched either of those you probably got this feeling that you have seen something special. Something that is not like what you usually see. Maybe it is because of the subject matter of each of the movies. Maybe it is because of the seriously good animation. Or maybe because each movie is realistic, yet not boring or mundane. But no matter the reason, they are both special, and you would not regret watching it. And... if you have seen one of the movies, you know there is some adult material in it, right? Not anything explicit, just not something that you should show to kids. Keep that in mind, the movies are similar in that aspect too. read more 

Pretty much any Gainax work have some common threads, but Honneamise and FLCL have a similar sense of sadness about them. This is due to both main characters having a dream/ideal can't really be met with their current lifestyles. Mundane life is expressed in both through a sense of directionless inertia on the part of the main characters. Both of the main characters also meet a woman (Riquinni for Shiro and Haruko for Naota) who change their lives. While completely different in style (surrealist/superflat vs. hyper-realism) they remain comparable in my opinion.  

In both anime a group of peoples trying to prove themselves to others that there are not "USELESS" Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise main story focus on Royal Space Force(RSF), a division whose mission is bring human to outer space, but in reality people calling them "troublemaker", "lazynies","crazy", or "coward" because RSF mission to bring humans into space never gives progress & profitable . But they never give up and want to prove it, THEY CAN BRING HUMAN TO SPACE in the end. Sakurasou also have same story. Sakura Dormitory is a dorm of the high school affiliated with Suimei University of the Arts (often shortened as Suiko), which hosts the strangest, most trouble-making students. But in reality all student in sakura dormitory is......... "normal" student with unique ability beyond normal students. Both movies have a great war plot and very immersive direction, even The Sky Crawlers having a more nihilistic and ''realistic'' look. The protagonist of both movies is also somewhat similar. 

This is intended more to compare Honneamise and the original FF7 game. FF7 seemingly drew inspiration from Honneamise in its world, as both pick and choose similar tech and style from the 19th century to present. Both also have main characters who similarly fluctuate between self-loathing and purposeful optimism. 

Both films tell a story of technical efforts (aviation and space exploration) intertwined with the life and goals of the protagonist. 

Both stories share the theme of flight and carefully detail the hand-making of a flying machine. They are also similar in their realism and subtlety. The Wings of Honneamise is hard sci-fi while Porco Rosso follows a lighthearted (yet mature) fantasy. Bottom line: both are old school classics that can't be missed! 

While not tonally linked, some themes and ideas feel similar enough to merit giving this short OVA a try. 

Space Brothers and Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise are fundamentally stories about space exploration. They focus on the engrossing personal journeys of the main characters as they train to become astronauts, including its hardships, frustrations, hopes, and celebrations. Both titles are very grounded in current/near-future realism. 

Both revolve around the conflict of interests between warfare and space exploration.  

Two great '80s sci-fi flicks that successfully balance science fiction themes about space travel (Honneamise) and aliens (Macross) while maintaining engaging romantic plots. Great for fans of sci-fi OR romance, and best for anybody who loves a good combination of the two. 

They both have the same narrative tone regarding technology and fantastic animation quality. 

There is no other anime quite like these two films. They are, first and foremost, slow-paced character studies. Pacing is secondary to characterisation. There is also something undeniably 'art-house' about the way they are directed: Honneamise in particular basically being 2D art/animation porn (the time before CG shortcuts were possible), with a wonderful chase sequence. And Colorful has its own intense 'run with girl' scene that has stayed with me. Honneamise is sci-fi (set in an alternate world; about being the first astronaut), where as Colorful is a modern suicide & rebirth tale about a 14-year-old from our world. So, superficially, totally different. BUT, what both movies are truly about is their respective lead characters finding a place for themselves: rising above being an unmotivated nobody in Honneamise and accepting the realities of life in Colorful, whilst being rejected by the person they desire. The vibe this similar characterisation approach gives off is what makes me link the two. The most obvious 'OH SNAP!' similarity would be the rather random rape attempt scenes. Honneamise's seemingly random / serious faced scene is (in)famous, and Colorful had its own - less graphic - abrupt equivalent. The similar(sh) undercurrent running throughout them is why these otherwise very different movies both have such a scene included.  read more
