Domestic na Kanojo (Domestic Girlfriend)

Natsuo Fujii is in love with his teacher, Hina. Attempting to forget his feelings towards her, Natsuo goes to a mixer with his classmates where he meets an odd girl named Rui Tachibana. In a strange turn of events, Rui asks Natsuo to sneak out with her and do her a favor. To his surprise, their destination is Rui's house—and her request is for him to have sex with her. There's no love behind the act; she just wants to learn from the experience. Thinking that it might help him forget about Hina, Natsuo hesitantly agrees.

After this unusual encounter Natsuo now faces a new problem. With his father remarrying, he ends up with a new pair of stepsisters; unfortunately, he knows these two girls all too well. He soon finds out his new siblings are none other than Hina and Rui! Now living with both the teacher he loves and the girl with whom he had his "first time," Natsuo finds himself in an unexpected love triangle as he climbs ever closer towards adulthood.

This show, this manga, was HOT, HOT GARBAGE, but i loved it...

honestly, Frustration was the only feeling I could get throughout the majority of the volumes, frustration at my self for still reading this crap and at the author for bulying these characters. What drew me in was the drama of this story, they over the top unpredictable drama. however, the more and more I read the story my more depressed I grew, especially concerning Hina's feelings. I don't think there is a single person that read through this and did not the the author had it out for Hina, as if ... she hated the character. Loving someone relentlessly is not easy, but what Hina did through the story was impossible, but maybe thats the point T_T. love is powerful?

My major grime with the story is just that the author spends 40% of the manga on characters not directly related to the progression of the story. this made it harder to read at times but in some cases gave me a greater understanding for who the characters were. The main cast, hina, rui, and natsu were given so much life throughout the story, however hina was the best written character throughout the whole story. Right person Wrong time, type of situation arose between Hina and natsu and it was up to her to make that decision, many decisions, sacrificing her own selfish needs for love for the future of the one she loves, over and over and over. Despite Hina being such a good character, overall I cant really say the characters in the series were that good. I mean, we had unnecessary characters littered throughout the story, simply to make Rui jealous or to ad another fucked up dimension to the manga. he goes on a blind triple date and picks up a drug addict only to be saved by his yakuza gay friend, Does that not sound ridiculous? of course I loved it however.

Story: 7.5
Wow. just Wow. I have never... No one has ever seen a story start out like that, plus points for being completely new and unique but.. The story lacks in pacing. During the manga, certain things would happen so fast and then you would get the most useless side character development arc for 5 chapters straight. If the story was 50-70 chapters shorter, I feel as if this manga could have been perfect. It could have simply been a tragic story on the pains of love, but no, its that, but 70 extra chapters of unnecessary dialogue and characters thrown randomly throughout the story. also Rui and Natsu's trip to the cabin in the winter. I give it a 7.5 because it really could have been perfect, and touched my heart in that fact but ruined it with adding toooooo much.

art: 7.5
really... nothing special. But it does get an extra half points because of the wide panel shots that can be really, shocking, beautiful and disturbing throughout the series. My only issue with the wide panel shots is that they do it for almost every unnecessary kiss scene.

enjoyment: 10
I have a love hate relationship with the series. The tragic story of Hina, akin to 'garden of words' , and the coy romance between rui and natsu grabbed my attention and my apreciation for these characters deeply. Because of this deep appreciation, every dramatic drop, every wide panel, every drop of blood had me appalled, confused, and excited, nothing short of perfection for how I personally enjoyed the series. I also cried closer to the end brrrr.

OVERALL: 8/10.

I can understand people giving this a 6 or a 7, but anything above an 8 you are lost, and anything below a 6, you probably couldnt get through the more weirder parts of the story, overall missing a great and tragic romance. just because of some niche dislike you shouldnt give a series a 1 or 2 out of ten with a long ass review.

Mixed Feelings

Every reader who is blessed to read the masterpiece that is Domestic Girlfriend is inevitably confronted with an important question. No, it’s not whether the “Magnum Opus of All Literature Ever” deserves such a lofty title – that’s a given. Rather, the question is how it manages to do so, and in the process reduce titles like Berserk, Oyasumi Punpun, One Piece, Slam Dunk, and Vinland Saga to comparatively “mid” at best.

Some may say that Domestic Girlfriend overstays its welcome or that it drags its drama on for too long. These people are clearly unenlightened and haven’t read this magnificent work of art. Yes, it ... may be exhausting and you may need to take breaks while reading it. However, that’s only because the density of its content must be pondered for its brilliance because it easily overwhelms our feeble brains. There are no superfluous panels, dialogue, or plot points, especially when one character sticks a pill in another character’s butt, or when characters turn into puddles, when no one can identify the female who is having non-consensual sex with other characters, or when another character is passed out drunk and topless. These connect to the deepest themes of the human experience and every re-read deepens one’s insight on philosophy, science, love, and suffering.

Others may say the ending is terrible. I repeat, these fools are unenlightened and haven’t read the story. One is not merely moved by the story of Natsuo, Rui, and Hina; they become the story and live it out. Upon reading it, we become Natsuo, wrestling with our affections for our new stepsisters while struggling to be a writer and fending off the affections of other women over the course of many years until chapters 274 - 276. No one who hasn’t read Dome x Kano can understand this statement, while all who have read it can. Once you’ve acquired this knowledge, then one can see why the ending worked as it did.

Therefore, it is not an open question whether one ought to read Domestic Girlfriend. The question is when. What is stopping you from achieving enlightenment? What are you scared of? Actualization? The Good Life? Theosis? However, there is only so much I can say. Rather, I'll let you soak in the dialogue of this opening scene and ask yourself whether you can smell just a hint of its power:

“Don’t get the wrong idea, okay? This doesn’t mean we’re dating or anything. We aren’t going to exchange numbers. This is probably a one-time thing.
"(thinking) I feel so out of it. Even though none of this seems real… it’s without a doubt happening. Just a moment ago, I lost my virginity."

AVOID this series like the plague. I saw the anime and regretfully read the manga in its entirety and now I'm having an existential crisis examining my life choices that lead me to the thought that it would be a good idea to watch/read this series. SPOILERS & bad language follows.

First the series seem geared to guys, because of the taboo love scenes. The main protagonist is a sensitive artist who cares about everyone and just so happens to attract various women who throw themselves at him. He of course is a gentleman to them and never takes advantage of them, except if there his ... OWN SISTERS. LOL my god....I cant believe they really thought that was a good idea. OK so there step siblings but still. So the main character I have problem with besides Natsuo is Hina. She is a high ranking chomo in every sense of the word. I know that boys have this older teacher fantasy, and many have the attitude of age is just a number. But to be so infatuated with a boy you probably only got pubes a few years before you meet him is disturbing. Even after the relationship was over and he was busy humping his other sister, she was still so infatuated by him that he could not let go. It is disturbing. The nail on the coffin for this series is the build-up to the dumpster fire ending. The whole series really revolved around the relationship what would build around Natsuo and Rui, even having a kid together. But because they feel bad for Hina, they say fuck our feeling and just stopped loving each other. Make it make sense. At the end chomo get the student she groomed. Rui becomes a single mom and their kid has some fuck up dynamics to deal with. I kinda feel bad for hina really, she could of had a wonderful character development where she understood that her feelings/relationship with this younger guy was wrong but maybe due to the stress of being in a affair with a married man, and she could mature to a level of understanding where although she did not regret her pass she could learn from it and move on in a mature manner fitting a woman. Instead she is stuck as the childish chomo who can barely cook. Its a good thing that Rui had a kid for Natsuo because the way Hina drinks her eggs are probably pickled. I saw the alternative ending but it seems just as haphazardly put together as the original ending, that even switching around the characters meant nothing at that point.

I wish I would of read reviews before I went into it, if only I could take my time back. The only redeeming thing about it at this point is reading the hilarious review other have written about the series. Someone called Natsuo a sack of potatoes it was the funniest part of the whole series.
