I can enjoy most types of shows, but have a special place in my heart for anime that grapple with philosophical or psychological themes and anime that depict poverty or characters affected by it in a serious way.
I don't watch anime when I am happy.
About my scoring:
My ratings are based on my sensibilities about what I think makes an artistically exceptional series and not my enjoyment. In general when I give a show a score I consider the following elements important: strong worldbuilding or atmosphere, strong plot, strong pacing, strong characterization, strong art, strong concept, holism (do all elements of the show fit together), lasting emotional impact, lasting intellectual impact, and replayability. For the first six of these elements, I generally consider the element “strong” if it transcends common cliches and tropes, meshes in creative ways with the overall show, or otherwise is done in a highly memorable way. I use whether I feel a show has replayability, emotional, and intellectual impact as my cut off for whether shows get sorted above or below 5.
