Beyond the more than generic, nauseating graphics, this manga with its archetypal title instantly seems doomed to the dustbin of history, filled to the brim with immersive video games, cliché RPGs, or warriors with giant swords, prepubescent loligoths and over-the-top magic. -the (crop)top collide in abundance. The relatively unusual multiplication of classes (cooks, fishermen, architects, that sort) and a sort of alchemical balance refer to tutelary figures that are a bit more salient (HxX, FMA) without of course being able to claim to rival them, far from it. (we still leaf through a substitute for .Hack or other Sword Art
...
Online) which is entirely, almost, based on an FFX-style twist - here's the spoiler: to triumph over the grotesque king of evil and his circus clique, our ( anti) heroes must sacrifice the recruits whose leveling will aggregate into a fatal death knell. After this narrative burst, this short saga runs out of steam in gratuitous, shortened fights, in wanderings without a destination (far too many narrative sub-arcs and characters), ending up botching its story, like a YuYu Hakusho from the very bad days. Moralistic outpourings (is the sacrifice of a few for the many justified?) thus end up buried alive, under a random cohort of interchangeable assailants.

Au delà du graphisme plus que générique, nauséeux, ce manga au titre archétypal semble instantanément voué aux poubelles de l'histoire, remplis à ras-bord de jeu vidéo immersif, RPG-clichés, ou guerriers à épées géantes, loligoths prépubères et magie over-the (crop)top s'entrechoquent à foison. La multiplication de classes relativement insolite (cuistots, pêcheurs, architectes, ce genre) et une sorte d'équilibre alchimique renvoient à des figures tutélaires un poil plus saillantes (HxX, FMA) sans bien sûr pouvoir prétendre les rivaliser, loin s'en faut (on feuillette quand même un succédané de .Hack ou autres Sword Art Online) qui tient tout entier, quasi, sur un twist à la FFX - voilà le spoiler- : pour triompher du grotesque roi du mal et de sa clique circassienne, nos (anti) héros doivent sacrifier les recrues dont le leveling s'agglomérera en un glas fatal. Passé ce sursaut narratif, cette courte saga s'essouffle en combats gratuits, écourtés, en divagations sans destination (bien trop de sous-arcs narratifs et de personnages), finissant par bâcler son récit, tel un YuYu Hakusho des forts mauvais jours. Les épanchements moralistes ( le sacrifice de quelques uns pour le grand nombre se justifie t-il ?) finit ainsi enterré vivant, sous une cohorte random d'assaillants interchangeables.

Packed into a few small volumes, the good-natured humor of Princess Jellyfish worked quite well. But quickly, as is often the case, the repetition imposed itself: and each Amar (these otaku girls living in seclusion) became a gimmick character. Reference to the three kingdoms, reference to trains, references to the kimono... Alas, the reader comes away a little bloodless from a very excessive drivel. Moreover, some subversive plots of course slip into these girly escapades. Thus the disguise of the rich heir which energizes our group of asocials. Or again, very timidly, from the commercial world of fashion, to which
...
to oppose, to complete rather than implode, a clothing fashion adapted to non-fashionistas (the antonym of the "humana cocquetta" gently mocked here). Serial logic, of course, ends up producing boring comings and goings, feelings as tools of suspense, trials like so many adventures coming to stimulate the affinity tendency of the story (the expulsion from the Amars' lair, which encourages them to propose fashion line and fashion shows). But, thanks to a biting trait not so far from Yazawa (let's think of Paradise Kiss or Gojinko), even if less fundamentally meta, and less inclined to echo the true horrors of reality (here too mocked, or too close to clichés agreed to spread any discomfort), but carried by a few funny secondary characters (the flirtatious assistant with ridiculous class, or the manga hikkimori behind the door communicating by aphoric papers), we still reach the end of this nice escape in modally gendered territory.

Tassé sur quelques petits tomes, l'humour bon enfant de Princess Jellyfish fonctionnait pas mal. Mais rapidement, comme souvent, la redite s'imposa : et chaque Amar (ces nanas otakus vivant reclus) de devenir un personnage gimmick. Référence aux trois royaumes, référence aux trains, références au kimono... Las, le lecteur sort un peu exsangue d'un radotage bien excessif. Au demeurant, quelques trames subversives viennent bien sûr se glisser dans ces frasques girly. Ainsi du travestissement du riche héritier qui dynamise notre groupe d'asociales. Ou encore, très timidement, du monde commercial de la mode, auquel opposer, pour compléter plutôt qu'imploser, une mode vestimentaire adaptée aux non-fashionistas ( l'antonyme des "humana cocquetta" gentiment raillées ici). La logique sérielle, bien sûr, finit par produire des va et vient bourratifs, sentiments comme outils de suspens, épreuves comme autant de péripéties venues stimuler la tendance affine du récit (l'expulsion de l'antre des Amars, qui les incite à proposer ligne de mode et défilés). Mais, grâce à un trait mordant pas si loin de Yazawa (songeons à Paradise Kiss ou Gojinko), même si moins foncièrement méta, et moins enclin à faire écho aux véritables affres du réel (ici trop tourné en dérision, ou trop proche de clichés convenus pour propager un quelconque malaise), mais porté par quelques personnages secondaires drôlatiques (l'assistant dragueur à la classe dérisoire, ou l'hikkimori manga derrière porte communiquant par papiers aphoriques), on parvient tout de même au bout de cette échappée gentillette en territoire modalement genré.

As always, Mari Yamazaki takes great pleasure in walking us between antiquity, here Greece, and contemporary Japan. This defector, passionate about ancient history as well as manga, is therefore enjoying herself, after Thermae Roma (which dealt with the similarities between ancient Rome and Japan in terms of... thermal baths), with this new saga, which is not very epic to say the least, dealing with sport. .. to make fun of it better. Not entirely, of course, since it is above all - and wisely - about criticizing its commercial and competitive excesses, while enhancing it with a philosophical underlay (Plato
...
himself is invoked). The gags and the drawing are certainly a little light, but we take pleasure in the game of these temporal back and forths as a means of discussing the subject, in a great reflective bath where anachronistic incongruities intermingle (these mangas on amphoras) and unpretentious theoretical debates (sport as a dialectical tool... without breaking bricks).

Comme toujours, Mari Yamazaki prend un malin plaisir à nous balader entre l'antiquité, ici la Grèce, et le Japon contemporain. Cette transfuge passionnée d'histoire ancienne comme de mangas se régale donc, après Thermae Roma (qui traitait des similarités entre Rome antique et Japon en terme de ... bains thermaux), avec cette nouvelle saga pour le moins peu épique traitant de sport... pour mieux s'en moquer. Pas tout à fait, certes, puisqu'il s'agit surtout -à bon escient- de critiquer ses dérives commerciales et compétitives, tout en le rehaussant d'une sous-couche philosophique (Platon lui-même est invoqué). Les gags et le dessin sont certes un peu léger, mais on se prend au plaisir au jeu de ces allers-retours temporels comme autant de moyen de disserter sur le sujet, dans un grand bain réflexif où s'entremêlent incongruités anachroniques (ces mangas sur amphores) et débats théoriques sans prétention (le sport comme outil dialectique... sans casser des briques).

Another post-shonen where the improvement is great from the start, or like in One Punch Man, a way of following up on the narrative impasse that constitutes the usual framework of nekketsu: training, tiring fights of one-upmanship. Such a postulate is of course accompanied by over-the-top humor, which starts rather with a bang and ends, a well-known hazard of grueling serialization, by becoming a routine with peaks/troughs (think, among others, of One Piece , when eruptive humor ends up becoming self-referenced and, an intrinsic contradiction killing its potential for humor, or its very nature of humor, predictable). Not counting of
...
course some gritty gags (the teacher has big breasts) designed for a teenage audience.
All the same, the character of Koro remains endearing and, even if the different students remain more or less interchangeable or, paradoxically, characterized by a one-dimensional cliché, the reciprocal relationship of the teacher to his students ends up proving relatively poignant. Carried by laudatory educational speeches, which, finally in the sometimes reactionary Japanese straitjacket, give priority to encouragement over punishment, Assassination Class Room acts subversively like a little Mentesori treatise: as proof this class of "losers" who will be brought regaining confidence in herself constitutes the main narrative arc of progression in fine, much more than the pretext acquisition of assassin's abilities. Clearly, Koro advocates the virtues of encouragement rather than punishment, and of teamwork rather than competition. Honor and dignity even take a small blow in a passage near the end, where we learn to crush ourselves to survive (live better) rather than die a boaster. Well, the drawing is still notably ugly, especially that of the humans, and very moderately shaky for the action, but the design of the octopus is fabulous and that's so much the better, as this story is based above all on its tentacles regenerated at the same time. 'infinity.

Encore un post-shonen où l’amélioration est pétée dès le départ, soit comme dans One Punch Man, une manière de faire suite à l'impasse narrative que constitue le cadre habituel du nekketsu : entraînements, combats lassants de surenchère. Un tel postulat s'accompagnant bien sûr d'un humour over the top, qui démarre plutôt en trombe pour finir, aléas bien connu d'une sérialisation éreintante, par devenir une routine avec pics/creux (penser, entre autres, à One Piece, lorsque l'humour éruptif finit par devenir auto-référencé et, contradiction intrinsèque tuant son potentiel de drôlerie, soit sa nature même d'humour, prévisible). Sans compter bien sûr sur quelques gags graveleux (la prof a gros seins) taillés pour un public ado.
Tout de même, le personnage de Koro demeure attachant et, quand bien même les différents élèves demeurent peu ou prou interchangeables ou, paradoxalement, caractérisés par un cliché uni-dimensionnel, la relation réciproque de l'enseignant à ses élèves finit par s'avérer relativement poignante. Porté par des discours pédagogiques laudateurs, qui font, enfin dans le carcan parfois réac' nippon, primer l'encouragement sur la punition, Assassination Class Room agit subversivement comme un petit traité Mentesori : pour preuve cette classe de « losers » qui va être amené à reprendre confiance en elle constitue le principal arc narratif de progression in fine, bien d'avantage que l'acquisition prétexte de capacités d'assassins. Clairement, Koro prône les vertus de l’encouragement plutôt que la punition, et celle du travail en équipe plutôt que la compétition. L'honneur et la dignité prennent même une petite taloche dans un passage proche de la fin, où l'on apprend à s'écraser pour survivre (mieux vivre) plutôt qu'à mourir fanfaron. Bon, le dessin est quand même notablement moche, notamment celui des humains, et très moyennement branlé pour l’action, mais le design du poulpe est fabuleux et c'est tant mieux, tant cette histoire repose avant tout sur ses tentacules régénérées à l'infini.

A concentrate of what Fujimoto does best, an always explosive mix of meta, black humor, twisted psychology and underlying sentimentality. By drawing the story of a schoolboy filming the death of his mother (a genius idea which immediately places the reader in front of a moral and aesthetic dilemma, if not in front of an emotional maelstrom strangely defused by absurd shocks), Fujimoto constantly manages to surprise. This surprise, in itself, has nothing of the paraphernalia of a smartass as it carries with it a thousand undertows, sometimes arousing laughter, sometimes reflection, sometimes wonder, sometimes a tad of tears; all brilliantly
...
intertwined. His drawing, certainly not particularly virtuoso, is here at the total service of the narration and, having rightly nothing but the technical inflator, the graphic biceps contest, does not hesitate to copy and paste boxes to let slip time (a process already at work in Don't Look Back), in daring truly surprising breaks in tone (the famous signature explosions, which several times turn out to be brilliant strokes lacerating the imagination with brilliance and fiery derision).
A seasoned psychoanalyst would not be able to prevent himself from dissecting the relationship altogether particular to women which seems to animate Fujimoto, more and more evidently as his work thickens. Dominating, manipulative, cajoling and deceitful, these come out much less diminished than fetishized, in a style that a Polanski who passed through the meta-punk filter of Sono Sion would perhaps not deny - under my keyboard, a double nested compliment , clearly). Here, first the mother, whose gift turns out to be both liberating (encouraging the young Yuata to film, to become an artist-creator) and cruel (what she asks to be filmed has all the potential for trauma, and proves in addition, which will be revealed in a flashback nestled within the giant nesting montage that is Sayanora Eri, a way of creating a clear, expurgated image, not without despising her son, incapable of perform the task at the expected height). Duplicating the motifs, of course blurring the lines between acting/authentic capture, real story or story in the story, Fujimoto will go so far as to mix this maternal figure with a girlfriend (fictitious, finally?), vampire, as one more confusion (Hello Freud) coming to confuse the reader, fortunately always connected to these mental and narrative drifts by a tasty sense of the clear line. Worthy of the best Dupieux and K.Dick, in a way, therefore worthy of the best (simply).

Un concentré de ce que Fujimoto fait de mieux, un mix toujours détonnant de méta, d'humour noir, de psychologie tordue et de sentimentalisme sous-jacent. En dessinant l'histoire d'un collégien filmant la mort de sa mère (idée de génie qui place d'emblée le lecteur face à un dilemme moral et esthétique, sinon face à un maelstrom émotionnel étrangement désamorcé par des coups de butoir absurdes), Fujimoto parvient constamment à surprendre. Cette surprise, en soi, n'a rien de l'attirail de petit malin tant elle porte en elle mille ressacs, suscitant tantôt le rire, tantôt la réflexion, tantôt l'émerveillement, parfois un tantinet de larmichette; le tout brillamment entremêlé. Son dessin, certes pas particulièrement virtuose, est ici au total service de la narration et, n'ayant à juste titre que foutre de la gonflette technique, du concours de biceps graphique, n'hésite pas à copier-coller des cases pour laisser filer le temps (procédé déjà à l'oeuvre dans Don't Look Back), à oser des ruptures de tons vraiment surprenantes (les fameuses explosions-signature, lesquelles s'avèrent plusieurs fois des coups d'éclat lacérant l'imaginaire avec brio et une fougueuse dérision).
Un psychanalyste aguerri ne pourra s'empêcher de décortiquer le rapport somme toute particulier aux femmes qui semble, de façon de plus en plus récurrente à mesure que son oeuvre s'épaissit, animer Fujimoto. Dominatrices, manipulatrices, cajôleuse et trompeuses, celles-si en sortent bien moins amoindries que fétichisées, dans un style que ne renierait peut-être pas un Polanski passé par le filtre méta-punk de Sono Sion - sous mon clavier, un double compliment emboîté, clairement). Ici, d'abord la mère, dont le cadeau s'avère à la fois libérateur (encourageant le jeune Yuata à filmer, à devenir un artiste-créateur) et cruel (ce qu'elle demande de filmer a tout du trauma en puissance, et s'avère en plus, ce qui sera révélé dans un flashback niché au sein du montage-gigogne géant qu'est Sayanora Eri, une manière de se créer une image nette, expurgée, non sans pour autant mépriser son fils incapable de s'acquitter de la tâche à la hauteur escomptée). Dédoublant les motifs, brouillant bien sûr les pistes entre jeu/captation authentique, récit réel ou récit dans le récit, Fujimoto ira jusqu'à mélanger cette figure maternelle a une petite amie (fictive, finalement?), vampire, comme une confusion de plus (coucou Freud) venant déboussoler le lecteur heureusement toujours raccordé à ces dérives mentales et narratives par un sens de la ligne claire savoureux. Digne des meilleurs Dupieux et K.Dick, d'une certaine manière, donc digne des meilleurs (tout court).

The horror genre is not necessarily mine at the base (too many hackneyed effects, thrills of which I struggle to see the interest), succeeding as is the case with Mushihime to keep me spellbound for 1h30, time to read the three volumes, is already a small feat. The story, quite simple, mixing different motifs, we understand that we are dealing with a seasoned author. Between Japanese folklore (several Shinto myths are evoked to give relief), ancient tragedy and psychoanalysis (parricide, incest and twinning are all great figures handled with a scalpel) and ecological subtext (the question of the survival of humanity as as such), this
...
story with drawers holds a lot of promises. Sometimes perhaps a little too much, as some of these themes would have benefited from being further developed (the need for mutation and the role of insects, for example) to make it a work of macabre prophecy à la Parasite, while the litany of heavy figures can sometimes also give the impression of screenplay ease (or when the great antique strings are sometimes reduced to low-cost strings). Note that the drawing, entrusted to an improvised mangaka illustrator here, is both clean and elegant, and holds the boat perfectly without forcing too much.

Le genre horrifique n'étant pas forcément le mien à la base (trop d'effets éculés, de sensations fortes dont je peine à voir l'intérêt), réussir comme c'est le cas de Mushihime a me tenir en haleine 1h30 durant, le temps de lire les trois tomes, est déjà un petit exploit. L'histoire, assez simple, brassant différents motifs, on comprend qu'on a affaire à un auteur aguerri. Entre folklore japonais (plusieurs mythes shintoistes sont évoqués pour donner relief), tragédie antique et psychanalyse (parricide, inceste et gémellité sont autant de grandes figures maniées au scalpel) et sous-texte écologique (la question de la survie de l'humanité en tant que telle), cette histoire à tiroirs tient pas mal de promesses. Parfois peut-être un peu trop, tant certains des ces thèmes aurait gagné à être développé d'avantage (le besoin du mutation et le rôle des insectes, par exemple) pour en faire une oeuvre de prophétie macabre à la Parasite, tandis que la litanie de figures lourdes peut parfois aussi donner l'impression d'une facilité scénaristique (où quand les grandes cordes antiques sont parfois réduites à des ficelles low-cost). A noter que le dessin, confié à une illustratrice ici mangaka improvisée est à la fois net et élégant, et tient parfaitement la barque sans trop forcer.

Fujimoto is one of the hype mangakas of the moment. By reading Firepunch (I haven't looked into Chainsaw Man yet) it's easy to understand why: a dark, absurd, crazy, disturbing universe, but steeped in humor. Here, everything seems much more peaceful, sober. Look Back is certainly a meta manga, since telling the meeting in primary school of two apprentice designers. But the approach to the subject is probably more reflective on the very activity of drawing than on the narration or the format itself (by contrast, the director commenting on and directing the action in Fire Punch was much more disruptive).

Reflective and sensitive, a certain care having been brought to certain boards, for example, those revealing like a Monet painting his haystacks over the seasons, Fujimoto crunches the obstinacy of his young mangaka, in a fixed position, impervious to change climates that surround it. Or again, the one detailing the black and shaken gaze of the young girl learning terrible news... Vacuity of the fact of drawing, if not that of being able to rewrite history and escape into the imagination, as an epilogue seems to claim whose evanescent and dreamy scope we can measure with our fingertips.
But also a story of friendship sketched out, between two teenagers, one arrogant, mischievous and falsely sure of herself, the second, shy (even hikkimori) but careful and diligent; their complementarity being symbolized by these mangas that they will draw with four hands, one for the scenarios/characters, the second for the extremely neat decorations. Only, rather than clinging to these sensitive little details, Fujimoto, himself perhaps still a teenager in his approach, cannot help slipping slightly down two slippery slopes: on the one hand, the one who thinks that t is absolutely necessary that a drama occur (as such, he probably went beyond the medium and its prerogatives less than he thinks), then, that of a pathos sometimes slightly too strong. Despite everything, a recommendable one shot, revealing the sentimental aspect of an author ostensibly more busy rolling mechanics.

Fujimoto est l'un des mangakas hype du moment. En lisant Firepunch (je ne me suis pas encore penché sur Chainsaw Man) on comprend aisément pourquoi : un univers sombre, absurde, déjanté, perturbant, mais pétri d'humour. Ici, tout semble bien plus apaisé, sobre. Look Back est certes un manga méta, puisque racontant la rencontre en école primaire de deux apprenties dessinatrices. Mais l'approche du sujet se veut sans doute plus réflexive sur l'activité même de dessiner que sur la narration ou le format même ( par contraste, la réalisatrice commentant et orientant l'action dans Fire Punch était bien plus disruptive ). Réflexive et sensible, un soin certain ayant été apporté à certaines planches, par exemple, celles dévoilant tel un Monet peignant ses bottes de foin au fil des saison, Fujimoto croque l'obstination de sa jeune mangaka, dans une position fixe, imperméable aux changements climatiques qui l'entourent. Ou encore, celle détaillant le regard noir et ébranlé de la jeune fille apprenant une terrible nouvelle... Vacuité du fait de dessiner, sinon celui de pouvoir réécrire l'histoire et s'évader dans l'imaginaire, comme semble le clamer un épilogue dont on mesure du bout des doigts la portée évanescente et rêveuse.
Mais aussi une histoire d'amitié ébauchée, entre deux adolescentes, l'une arrogante, espiègle et faussement sûre d'elle, la seconde, timide (hikkimori même) mais soigneuse et appliquée ; leur complémentarité étant symbolisé par ces mangas qu'elles dessineront à quatre mains, l'une au scénarios/personnages, la seconde aux décors extrêmement soigné. Seulement, plutôt que de s'accrocher à ces petits détails sensibles, Fujimoto, lui-même peut-être encore adolescent dans son approche, ne peut s'empêcher de légèrement glissé sur deux pentes savonneuses : d'une part, celle qui pense qu'il faut absolument qu'un drame advienne (à ce titre, il a sans doute moins dépassé le medium et ses prérogatifs qu'il le pense), ensuite, celle d'un pathos parfois légèrement trop appuyé. Malgré tout un one shot recommandable, dévoilant l'aspect sentimental d'un auteur ostensiblement plus occupé à rouler des mécaniques.

Chiisakobé is the adaptation of an age-old Japanese novel, transposed into a contemporary bled where the hero, who has been given the panoply of total vintage hipster, is a carpenter responsible for taking over the family business following a fire that led to the death of his parents. Without knowing the original work, it seems quite obvious that this is a transposition as various events seem anachronistic, even in a society sometimes as patriarchal and traditional as Japan. Thus, a few slaps or spankings appear as relics from another age, and even when these gestures are questioned, they end -problematically- by
...
being dubbed by history (by extrapolating and amplifying: we find the old adage "beat your wife, if you don't know why, she will know"). For the somewhat critical and alert reader, it seems precisely that the discrepancy between modernized decorum and archaic behavior produces a dissonance that is not without mental fruitfulness, through the art of contrast (these gestures potentially appear all the more shocking that they are located in a modern setting, supposedly more sanitized, comprehensive and benevolent).
The story itself deals with timeless subjects: mourning, education, work, love... Which may explain the ease of transposition, moreover. But as such, Chiisakobé, despite some incongruous elements (the carpenter's home becomes a refuge for several colorful orphans, which is easier to imagine in a post-war or crisis period than in the 21st century), is often content to unfold well-known patterns: debt problems to overcome (and they will be... by ellipse), mourning to digest and, mainly, a love triangle, which places us much more side of the young Ritsu, a kind of adoptive mother of the children of the household, a woman devoted to maintenance and domestic chores, rather than that of the beautiful Yuko, a more dynamic woman who clearly has a crush on our head Hipster. Here again, everything follows without taking a big risk, with a vision that is still quite backward-looking (in the end, the choice falls on the housewife rather than her more independent counterpart). Despite everything, by its delicate line, quite sensual in its way of anchoring (inking?) the slender bodies, and by light touches of humor, far too timid, we end this short saga without suffering too much either. Chiisakobé est l'adaptation d'un roman japonais séculaire, transposé dans un bled contemporain où le héros, à qui on a donné la panoplie du totale hipster vintage, est un menuisier chargé de reprendre l'affaire familiale suite à un incendie ayant entraîné la mort de ses parents. Sans connaître l’œuvre originale, il apparaît assez évident qu'il s'agit ici d'une transposition tant divers évènements semblent anachroniques, même dans une société parfois aussi patriarcale et traditionnelle que le Japon. Ainsi, quelques claques ou fessées apparaissent comme des reliquats d'un autre âge, et quand bien même ces geste sont-ils questionnés, ils finissent -problématiquement- par être adoubé par l'histoire (en extrapolant et amplifiant : on retrouve le vieil adage "bats ta femme, si toi, tu ne sais pas pourquoi, elle le saura"). Pour le lecteur un tant soit peu critique et alerte, il semble justement que le décalage entre le décorum modernisé et les comportements archaïque produit une dissonance qui n'est pas sans fécondité mentale, par art du contraste (ces gestes apparaissent potentiellement d'autant plus choquants qu'ils se situent dans un cadre moderne, supposé plus aseptisé, compréhensif et bienveillant).
L'histoire en elle-même traite de sujet intemporels : deuil, éducation, travail, amour... Ce qui peut expliquer la facilité de transposition, d'ailleurs. Mais à ce titre, Chiisakobé, malgré quelques éléments incongrus (le domicile du charpentier devient un refuge pour plusieurs orphelins hauts en couleurs, ce qu'on imagine plus aisément dans une période d'après-guerre, ou de crises, qu'au XXIème siècle), se contente de souvent de déplier des schémas bien connus : problèmes de dettes à surmonter (et ils le seront... par ellipse), deuil à digérer et, principalement, un triangle amoureux, qui nous place bien d'avantage du côté de la jeune Ritsu, sorte de mère d'adoption des enfants du foyer, femme dévouée à l'entretien et aux tâches domestiques, plutôt que de celui de la belle Yuko, femme plus dynamique ayant clairement le béguin pour notre Hipster en chef. Là encore, le tout se suit sans prendre de gros risque, avec une vision encore assez passéiste (in fine, le choix se porte sur la femme au foyer plutôt que sur son pendant plus indépendant). Malgré tout, par son trait délicat, assez sensuel dans sa manière d'ancrer (encrer?) les corps grâciles, et par de légères touches d'humour, bien trop timides, on finit cette courte saga sans non plus trop souffrir. Avec tout de même un sentiment de vacuité relative, mais bon.

What about Kids on the Slope? This manga follows three high school students in late 1960s Japan and revolves around jazz. I wrote "gravity", because if this noble musical genre cements the relations between our three young whippersnappers - namely: a binoclard letting go of the classical piano for improvised freedom, a young American-Japanese half-breed stuffing his drums and the charming damsel in the middle - it still seems to me that the real heart of the matter is more the feelings than the music.

of jazz, Kids on the Slope seems to disseminate with more lightness its few references, and happily revolves around the "Moanin '" of Blakey (but composed by Timmons) and "My Prince Will Come", Bill Evans version, to which our bespectacled hero is compared throughout his 9 volumes. Basically, the music acts as a link, a materialization of the friendly relationship (crypto-gay?) Between the two lads, and as a possible letter of declaration to the loved one. Also, if there are a few end-of-year concerts, the whole thing will undoubtedly appeal to those looking for sentimentality.
With its clear, elegant line, and this way of brushing the innocent emotions of adolescence, Kodama signs a work ultimately rather close, in more refined, to that of Yazawa (Nana, I am not an Angel) or even Adachi. (Rough), without any meta commentary. As such, Kids on the Slope shows a beautiful subtlety and will recall, by its unspoken and its ellipses, the communciational sufferings of the ungrateful age, not without falling here and there in some hackneyed cliché of romance (which proquo, conclusions interrupted). A sensitive and delicate work, a little disappointing for the jazz aficionado but which wins on the blackboard streaked with a nostalgic white line. Quid de Kids on the Slope ? Ce manga suit trois lycéens dans le japon de la fin des années 60 et gravite autour du jazz. J'ai bien écrit "gravite", car si ce noble genre musical cimente les relations entre nos trois jeunes freluquets - à savoir : un binoclard lâchant le piano classique pour la liberté improvisé, un jeune métis americano-japonais bourrinant sa batterie et le charmante donzelle au milieu -, il me semble quand même que le véritable cœur de l'affaire, c'est d'avantage les sentiments que la musique.
Là où un Blue Giant, sorti plus récemment, insistait franchement sur la discipline musicale, le solfège et l'histoire du jazz, Kids on the Slope semble disséminer avec plus de légèretés ses quelques références, et tournoie allégrement autour du "Moanin'" de Blakey (mais composé par Timmons) et de "My Prince Will Come", version Bill Evans, auquel notre héros à lunettes est comparé du long de ses 9 tomes. Au fond, la musique agit comme un lien, une matérialisation de la relation amicale (crypto-gay?) entre les deux lascars, et comme une possible lettre de déclaration à l'être aimée. Aussi, si on trouve bien quelques concerts de fins d'année, le tout plaira sans doute bien d'avantage à ceux cherchant du sentimental.
Avec sa ligne claire, élégante, et cette manière de brosser les émois innocents de l'adolescence, Kodama signe une œuvre finalement plutôt proche, en plus épuré, de celle de Yazawa (Nana, Je ne suis pas un Ange) voire d'Adachi (Rough), sans aucun commentaire méta. A ce titre, Kids on the Slope fait preuve d'une belle subtilité et rappellera, par ses non-dits et ses ellipses, les souffrances communciationnelles de l'âge ingrat, non sans tomber ici ou là dans quelque cliché de romance éculé (qui proquo, conclusions interrompues). Une œuvre sensible et délicate, un peu décevante pour l’aficionado de jazz mais qui gagne sur le tableau noir strié d'un nostalgique trait blanc. Et ayant pour lui l'originalité relative de son thème (le jazz), ancré par facilité dans une époque où il était mainstream, mais époque qui aurait pu être l'occasion de développer un peu certaines spécificité telles que le situation entre deux eaux de baroudeur blond...

Mutant Hanako is both genesis art, regressive sketches on the sheet, colored like a child, but a virtuoso child who still knows his rules of perspectives damn well and has a sense of composition. which imposes it. It's by making all of the most ghastly codes of storytelling stand on the same block, side by side, entangled, the most shameless porn and candid and exhausting pro-nationalist narrative (chosen heroes of God-the Emperor against demonic empires). , already) that Mutant Hanako turns out to be a hilarious and scathing weapon of mass deconstruction. Une claque comme j'en prends rarement ; et pourtant, j'en redemande ! Mutant Hanako, c'est à la fois de l'art-génèse, régressifs croquis à même la feuille, coloriés comme par un enfant, mais un enfant virtuose qui connaît quand même foutrement bien ses règles de perspectives et a un sens de la composition qui en impose. Ce grand enfant, ces en fait Makoto Aida, pas vraiment mangaka, mais artiste contemporain auteur d’œuvres chocs à renvoyer tous les Koons à leurs babillages : ici le pop est épousé avec ferveur, puis recraché avec maestria, et Aida semble à la fois perpétuellement tourner en ridicule le format débilisant qu'est le manga (commercial, soit quasiment tout le manga) tout en adhérant à sa forme d'expression libre, détachée des convenances, dans un jeu d'aller-retours produisant en permanence une hallucination visuelle et cérébrale.
C'est en faisant tenir sur un même bloc, côte à côté, intriqués, porno le plus éhonté et récit pro-nationaliste candide et épuisant tous les codes les plus faisandés de la narration (héros élus de Dieu-l'Empereur contre empire démoniaques, déjà ) que Mutant Hanako se révèle une hilarante et cinglante arme de déconstruction massive. La seconde guerre mondiale y est dépeinte au prisme d''un nationalisme hébété, gage, qui récite à gogo ses mantras creux, acte d'auto-dérision fondamental du nationalisme nippon en même temps que tournage en ridicule bien senti de la toute puissance impérialite américaine, phallocrate, champignon consumériste qui allait alors contaminer le monde. Sorti peu avant le 11 Septembre, Hanako semble comme préfigurer dans un geste punk, dada, surréaliste, l'effondrement tout relatif, le Choc des Civilisations refoulé qui allait alors bien vite revenir dans le discours des faucons mais vrais américains.
Pas à mettre entre toutes les mains, sûrement, mais un geste radical, frondeur et gorgé d'humour comme seule la marge peut le produire dans le monde si formaté et parfois désespérant du manga contemporain.
