Yeah same here. Of course at the time I never new just how ambitious this series was because it wasn't very popular outside japan at the time that trails in the sky was released for the psp. But finally after years and years, some where around 2016 i believe the localization company xseed started handeling the translations of the games and one of the localization editors at xseed was a HUGE trails fan so that deffinitly help. By the time the trails series made it to modern hardware that being the PS3 at the time, the series just absolutely exploded in popularity. So much so that multiple versions and remasters have already been released.

The remasters of trails in the sky FC, SC, and TC are all available on steam. But you can always play the psp original if you like. It is just not going to have all the refinements. Trails of blue and azure are the two games that have never officially made it to american shores yet, but that probably will change. In any case both of these games are handled by an escellent fan-project that have produced both games at 100% with amazing quality. Just a bit of a learning curve with emulation and learning how to get them to work. Trails of Cold steel I, II, III and IV have all been released globally so you can purchase these on a PS4, steam or even nintendo switch if you prefer depending upon what console you have. The next game which officially starts the next arc, called Hajimari no Kiseki because we don't have an official eng title yet released this year in japan. So an ENG locolization of this is coming soon. But yeah as i said, a big series, a big commitment but oh so worth it.

Saw your thread about you looking for anime games with good twists and some of them were a bit redicilous to be honset. blazblue? lol isn't that a fighting franchise? Anyways as a huge fan of jrpgs and video games in general. I have only literally 1 recommendation but I think in terms of an anime game or game series, NOTHING even remotely comes close to this and that is "LEGEND OF HEROES, TRAILS series" Now Yeah i can say Wild arms, Xenogears, Persona, star ocean, and even some tales games have great twists but in terms of longentivity and ambitious story telling that spands across multiple arcs and stories all into one large overarching narative that closely resembles something you would watch with a big large anime series. I am sorry but nothing in the japanese video game industry has ever created anything quite as deep as the trails series of legend of heroes. There is just nothing that exists like it, so thats my recommendation. There is a downside though if you can call it that. It is a DEEP commitment but if you want something to hold you over for the long haul then look no further.

Politics, war, genocide, its own established history, deep lore and world building, deep character development and story twists that are so absurdly ground breaking, it will leave you with your jaw on the floor and shaking in a diabetic coma.

Here is some cool videos so you can see some footage unless you happen to already know about this series and thus i wasted my time with this whole comment lol

Obvously with a game series that has spanned years and years, the early entries will have sort of a more 16-bit sprite look to it but does evolve to resemble something more like the modern persona games as you start playing the recent entries in the series.

Here is some gameplay footage of some the early games as well as what it eventually evolves into later on. How ever I am trying not to spoil to much because part of the fun with this series is to see how things gradually change and expand with new high stakes story developments over the course of the series.

Don't expect something on the same tech as like mainstream titles like call of duty or Final fantasy XV, but I am guessing that isn't an issue for you considering your seeking out anime games.
