He is basically showcase how side characters that are supposed too be even remotely important should be done/fit into the story.
His hope and positive attitude towards life despite having such broken past essentially wiped out.

And fight too even express himself with emotions and constantly asking others if he is doing it right essentially ending up as more human then those that always had everything served on their plates.

The show is not for everyone, you have to like mystery genre. If you are in kids stuff and some crappy action anime, of course you ll find it boring...

It's not so much a "bad ending" as in a bad ending for the characters, but a "bad ending" from a critical viewpoint, if that makes sense. It's just kinda out of nowhere. Oh well, have fun.

I suggest Bokurano 10x more - It's more depressing, much more well written, is more fucked up, and in addition has one of my favorite endings in manga (Narutaru has one of the worst ones ever imo). welp I think theyre more like microbes or animals. Some are beneficial and some are pathogenic or predatory to us but that doesnt mean that they are evil or something like that since all of them are only doing their own shit to survive even at the expense of other organisms. There's no such thing as good nor bad in nature anyways
