Hey Splitterny. It's been a while. How are you doing?

I'm a few weeks into grad school. It's a lot of work and a lot of article reading but I'm adjusting well and I'm excited to learn. Living on "my own" is a new experience though I have great roommates and familial/friend support. A highlight of supporting myself is making all of my meals. I get to fool around with new recipes even if they don’t turn out perfect. Conveniently, there’s an Asian market right near by so I’m having fun trying different recipes. Though I don't have as much time to entertain myself I value the time that I do even more.

I’m focusing on what I want to spend my time with between anime, manga, and video games (as well as joining clubs at school and working out). I’ve been reading more manga, especially for longer series, because I like to control the pacing. Like every season, I dropped some anime that weren't lighting my fire. There’s supposedly some other good stuff out there but I’ll ask about them once they’re finished.

Anime:
Right now I’m watching Non Non Biyori Repeat and it’s great just like the first season.

Bikini Warriors is utter trash and I’m enjoying it. Every episode I literally laugh out loud to the sheer insanity of it all. There was one episode where a character died. On her grave site they stuck her magic wand in the ground with her spaghetti string clothes waving in the wind.

Japan Animator Expo has had more misses than hits though I’m sticking around for the surprises. Well, I’m actually putting it on hold until the episodes pile up. The pieces that I enjoyed were The Bureau of Proto Society, Me!Me!Me!, 20min Walk, Power Plant No. 33, and Obake-chan. The Bureau of Proto Society by Trigger was particularly great.

Mushishi Zoku Shou: Suzu no Shizuku is the “big” anime that I just finished. I’m a bit sad knowing that there’s no more Mushishi but I’m glad that I got the chance to watch it. More than a few episodes and moments hit home hard and I did a lot of reflecting as the series went on.

On to manga:
Yoshitoshi ABe's works focus on something completely different from each other. Ryushika Ryushika is what I’m reading now and it’s about a young girl and how she sees the world. It’s a relaxing and easy-going read. It’s also something I’d recommend to anyone, no matter their age.

I started reading the Nausicaa manga. It was recommended to me with the promise of a more developed story. I loved the movie so I thought I’d give it a try. Plus, it would be interesting to read Miyazaki’s early work now that he’s finished directing. On a side note, I didn’t really enjoy his works after Spirited Away. I’m still very early in to the manga but far so good.

Similarly, another friend told me about the Evangelion manga and I’d like to give that a read. NGE and EoE are some of my favorite anime and I’d like to see how the manga compares. Also, I’m looking forward to the completion of the movies so Eva is all completed. This way I can finally lay it to rest in my mind.

The manga for Gakkougurashi! is great. I pretty much zoned in on the coping aspect and how it effects the survivors differently. I’m all caught up as I read it in one sitting though there isn’t too much material overall.

Prison School, like Bikini Warriors, is shameless. Everything is dramatic and the characters are deathly serious in the face of ridiculous situations.

Video games:
Most recently I’ve been focusing a large portion of my free time (watching Metal Gear Solid V gameplay while lamenting not having a PS4) playing Persona 4 Golden. After enjoying games like Mass Effect, 999, Fire Emblem Awakening, and The Banner Saga I discovered that I love social aspects and character conversations in games. I’m still very early in it but the characters are interesting, the world is fun to explore, and the music is great. I also appreciate that the main character is adjusting to a new place, which is relatable. Additionally, have a workout bike facing the TV in my room so that’s my motivation to work out.

Welp, that’s that I suppose. It felt good to summarize what I’m doing at the moment in terms of media entertainment. Again, I’m kept pretty busy by my training and classes for my grad program. I’m consuming less media and I’m appreciating it more. I just took a look at my backlist and whew! I have a lot to pick from. At the same time, it feels good knowing that there’s always quality or simply enjoyable work to appreciate.

How have you been? What are you enjoying?

Both are very good but this one right now is better I guess, do you think the other way?
Zack312 Aug 15, 2015 11:38 PM
Apart from anime sequels like Gintama and Durarara,
there are just average shows nothing too great
It’s time to ditch the text file.
