Synopsis

The sole thing that gets the middle-aged Sasaki through his soul-sucking job is a cheerful smile from Yamada—the young woman who works at a nearby 24-hour supermarket he frequents. After every tiring day of getting berated by his boss, Sasaki stops by the store to have his spirit healed by his favorite cashier.

After a particularly grueling day, Sasaki shows up at the supermarket, only to find that Yamada's shift has already ended. Disappointed, he searches for a place to smoke when a woman from behind the store calls him over to join her. The bold and dangerously playful Tayama is quick to call out Sasaki's peculiar habit of always seeking out her coworker—even going as far as telling Yamada about Sasaki's vested interest in her.

Now, in addition to seeing his adored cashier Yamada, Sasaki also visits the store to see if his new smoking partner Tayama is around. But there is more to Tayama's mischievousness than she initially lets on. With every cigarette, an unlikely friendship begins to blossom.

The Japanese supermarket, as portrayed in various forms of media, often presents itself as a middle ground between many different groups of people. From elementary schoolchildren looking to buy an afterschool snack with their allowance to balding middle-aged managers whose wives await them with another lecture about leaving the toilet seat up, there are nearly limitless interactions that can happen between the most diverse of people.

A Story About Smoking at the Back of the Supermarket is exactly what its title suggests. It follows the budding relationship between Sasaki, an overworked middle-aged salaryman, and Yamada, a cashier at the supermarket he frequents. For Sasaki, her pure ... smile is like a cooling pack for a feverish forehead: a comforting, genuine smile that he is shown by no one else. After all, he has no partner waiting for him to come home, nor any friendships in his work or outside of it (as far as we know). He comes to the supermarket to buy his cigarettes, be healed by Yamada's divine smile, and smoke out by the back.

Yamada is a young woman who has two very distinct sides to her demeanor, clearly shown by her trickery of Sasaki into thinking that she is two different people: Yamada and Tayama. Yamada is the cool and collected cashier at the supermarket, never abandoning her perfect smile and treating everyone with the same calm professionalism. But Tayama is the cashier who ties her hair up, speaks brashly, frequents the back of the store to smoke, and starts up a tentative acquaintanceship with the salaryman that she meets there. Yamada represents the perfect girl that she shows to strangers, and Tayama represents the parts of her personality that she suppresses: those that society might deem imperfections or flaws.

But Sasaki does not think this way, and instead heads into this new relationship with nothing but goodwill in his heart. Tayama teases him about Yamada, teaches him how to use his phone, and has him guess her age; Sasaki goes along with her antics, even when they cause him grief (both mentally and physically). From Sasaki's point of view, Tayama is a young woman who goes out of her way to talk to him, spend her time at the back of the supermarket to smoke and converse with him, and share a bit of her youthful liveliness with a burnt-out salaryman like himself. In a way, Tayama and Yamada are both consistent sources of something he sorely lacks in his life: a bright smile, and a real conversation. Of course, we (the readers) know that they are also the same person.

And so begins a beautiful friendship between an unlikely pair.

If shoujo is the flat-chested blond tsundere of romance manga, then adult romance is the mature career woman who looks amazing in a business suit. It is also a neglected and rarely seen genre in the medium, which is a shame, because gems like this one will go without the recognition they deserve. After reading this review, I hope that you will be interested enough to check her out and give her the love that she deserves.

The manga is not your usual lovey dovey romcom, as it is set in an adult world. I would say this is mixture of light romance, comedy, and slice of life. The concept is pretty simple yet unique. 2 adults interacting with each other (as their coping mechanism, sharing their day while smoking together) that still makes sense in normal logic, but yet it is cute and heartwarming in their own way (not in a creepy way). If you like a romcom with not much drama and some sugar, would recommend to read this. It's still at chapter 21.2 as per time of writing.

SO DAMN GOOD!!! I don't usually enjoy romance manga or romance anything for that matter, because it bores me or makes me uncomfortable. So when I came across this title I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it, but oh boy was I pleased!
When it comes to romance I guess I'm more into non gender normative dynamics and prefer shy men rather than aggressive ones, I was blushing and squealing the entire time I was reading it, and of course as a bi girl I fell in love with Tayama-san as well. I'll be so sad when this manga ends but I'm sure as hell ...
