Before giving an anime or manga a rating, I go through these categories to determine its rating.
1) Enjoyment. Above all, I take the experience to a more personal level and consider how I felt while watching an anime or reading a manga. Was I intrigued most of the time? Kept on the edge of my seat, maybe, curious what would happen next? Or was I just hoping to finish the series quickly because it was hyped by the general public? Even me being overly whipped for a character helps me go through an anime series with ease.
2) Storyline & Script. Pacing, Conflict, Events that take place, Whatever makes the plot so captivating. I'll even throw in character script as well because I prefer characters talking in great detail over things, be it a slice of life or a thriller genre anime, I'd like to know what goes on in their thought process.
3) Character. There are animes that I've stumbled on with mediocre plot but has compelling characters (yes, alot of wasted potential, sadly) but it helps me amp up the ratings in a way. Character's motives and philosophies are always a great addition to step up character development.
4) Art, Music & Sound. I don't mind artstyles too much unless its um, too unappealing in both style and colour schemes. To my surprise, I prefer animes with a neatly put together background music than animes with little to no background music.
