Sekirei (Manga)

Sekirei is a Supernatural, Harem, Action, Ecchi, Romantic, Comedy about an exciting battle royale, involving some of the hottest characters. Depending on your taste you may enjoy this out of the ordinary harem, or be repulsed by the clothes stripping action.

The Sekirei Plan is a top secret project where hot girls/guys of unknown origin have to fight, fight and fight some more, against each other. Minato Sahashi is the young man who’s thrown into this startling, unfamiliar situation, where he’s become the Ashikabi (partner) of Sekirei No. 88 (Musubi). This main plot is explained fairly early on through the crazy game master’s monologues but it takes a while to get to grips with the finer points of the story and its concept. In the early volumes the story is very incoherent, with no defined path until when the Sekirei plan reaches the 2nd stage. It’s good to know that the story isn’t only about fights between Sekireis, as it spends more time on the characters and how they adjust to the ever changing situations.

The characters in question are very symbolic for your average harem. The male protagonist Minato, has the sort of pathetic, auspicious, gentle personality that would allow himself to build a harem. This manga helps make building a harem very easy with the concept of Sekireis that are mostly cute or hot girls, able to express their individuality (but you might forget their names). With the Sekirei, their appealing features and traits are rather exaggerated and in some cases it can be a bit of a turn-off (e.g. freakishly huge breast). There are also other non-Sekirei characters but they seldom appear to make much of a difference.

The artwork for this ecchi manga is really good and consistently remains at this level throughout. The environments are well-drawn and the character designs are splendid, with some hot females making for some great fanservice. My only qualm is that it lacks some fine detail in both the environments and the character’s features; however its simplistic look does make it really easy to follow.

Overall Sekirei is a fairly addicting Ecchi Harem that seems to unintentionally promote pimping (>_<). There’s a lot of interesting and intense combat but they can be a bit over the top, seeing how they are more like strip fights. At least it results in a fair amount of eye pleasing, ecchi fanservice for guys to enjoy. There’s also a great deal of comedy moments, mostly thanks to Minato’s witty comments and the girl’s cute quirks (Ku-chan kawaii). So if you’re into ecchi or harem manga then check this one out, before the censored anime series arrives.
