BL/Yaoi/Shounen Ai manga are fiction but some hit too close to home for how realistic the situation, environment, and/or characters they have. Because of this, they tend to be on the mature side and tackles the situations that people in same sex relationships experiences in real life.

Mangaby hwanghyunjin

manga with queer relationships and minimal to no sexual content that i found likeable + felt not as fetishizing as most others
(not that there's anything wrong w sexual content but it's hard to find stuff in these genres that aren't mostly written for the smut)

stack created by a sex-repulsed biro ace :)

+ manhwa, webtoon, novels, etc. but it's easier to keep the title simple lol

honourable mentions not on MAL:
Fugue Across Worlds (GL, Historical)
I Love Amy (GL, Psychological)
The Best Smell/ The Scent of You (BL)
The Story About You x Me (BL)
Robber x Lover (BL)
Adding You to My Cart (webtoon with MLM charas)

NSFW series mentions (i’ve been branching out):
Oh! My Assistant (BL romcom, this one is filled with a ton of smut but it has one of the healthiest and sweetest relationships i’ve seen if u can get past the few misunderstanding arcs! and refreshingly realistic lgbt representation)
Exit’s that way! (GL, also filled with smut but still very engaging story-wise, unfortunately discontinued)

This stack collects BL manga which have longer stories or several stories about different characters in one universe, but can't be easily found because they're not in one entry. Instead, they're split in many sequels, spin-offs, side-stories, etc. The stack doesn't list all related series but only the first manga or the main manga. Also check the "more info" tab on the DB entries, they might contain more information about the best reading order.

Collection of boys love manga that can possibly be enjoyed even by those that don't care about or even dislike the genre in general. And you can trust me on that, because I certainly do not like the genre in general.

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY
Ok, we know how many stories there are with students of all kinds (delinquents, honor students, baka/stupid ones, popular ones, sporty and son on)
But sometimes high school and college/university stories are different, so I wanted to create separate lists, anyway I'll try to add usually sweet, fluffy and heartwarming stories.
--> I'm doing a similar stack for high school students

I'm disabled, so I read a lot of content looking for representation. A common problem with this content is that it is not handled well and/or is actually ableist. I wanted to make a list of disability representation, or stories with disabled characters in general, that are safe for anyone else looking for representation or perhaps hoping to learn more about disabilities.

A great manga has the ability to drag the readers into the story and make them experience what the characters are going through. Intense battle sequences will make you hold your breath in excitement while heartbreaking scenes will make you bawl your eyes out.

But there are times when you don't want to feel such deep emotions from manga. Sometimes you just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the story. In that case, a wholesome manga that can make you smile throughout the story is the one you should read, and these are some selections of manga that can do just that.

I’ve been reading BL for 10 years now, so I really needed a compilation of good works with young-adult/university students.
All mangas here have great art (if not amazing) and I only added the stories to which I gave a score 8 or higher ✨

BL Manga that tell a rich, memorable story. Carefully curated to be easy to recommend to non-BL fans.

BL, like all manga categories, has a specific brand of tropes and genre-specific bullshit that most fans learn to tolerate. That makes it hard to introduce new people to the genre.

These are manga that aren't just 'two men are hot and in love' (not that there's anything wrong with that). All these titles are incredible stories in their own right, with compelling plots that are worth discussing. They're the kinds of BL I would show someone to express why I love the genre, and maybe persuade them to dip their toes into it.

Every series has listed the closest adjacent genre(s) to help personalize recommendations according to taste. Some have erotica in them (but it's usually relevant to the story or fairly light/earned after a fair amount of narrative buildup).

Criteria for appearing on this list:
-An interesting story that you could actually talk about (Bonus points for cool world-building, fantastic art, or other factors that would rocket it's popularity if the story was in a more popular genre).
-The main lead's relationship with his male love interest is Significant, as well as Explicitly Canon.
-A fairly low level of common BL tropes (to make it more palatable to non-BL fans).
-It doesn't suck.

Coming-of-age refers to the process by which a child becomes an adult. These manga showcase characters who make the transition naturally, or are forced to grow due to outside pressures. Learning about one's self, about others, about the world, and what society requires from adults, are all common themes of coming-of-age works.

Includes a variety of: University & university student BL
・The majority of them are completed but some may be ongoing series.
・Manhwas and manhuas will be excluded since many are not in the database.
・Disclaimer: Multiple story mangas have many tags so at least one or more of the stories will fall into this category. >.<
Hopefully this stack helps someone find something to read~

I'll be including everything I've read except for certain series which just... feel... wrong and fetishizing? (I mean, e.g.: Ten Count by Takarai Rihito and almost all works of Kurahashi Tomo) Feel free to let me know if you feel like there is something included in this stack that feels like it shouldn't be here.

Manga where a main or otherwise central character has a disability. I've tried to be inclusive of different types of disabilities as I come across them and hope to update this list over time as I discover more.

Please be aware these are not necessarily own voices stories! I hope to only include positive rep in this list, but I’m still going through all the titles and am also always learning. <3

Live-action adaptations often leave a bad impression on anyone who has read or watched the source material. Many are even quick to say that they just should never exist. But I beg to differ—these kind of shows helps us look at things in another perspective. WILL your interpretation of [manga] be different if it is acted by people? I don't want to say live-actions are good, in fact I'm still cringing most of the time, but they give fresh air at least.

BL Manga with Live-action Adaptations! is exactly what it says. It specifically includes:
‣ Direct adaptations (said show has been adapted)
‣ Indirect adaptations (manga or novels that were created after the live-action).
‣ If both a manga and a novel are on MAL, the direct adaptation will be the only one added due to the interest stack limit.
‣ Upcoming adaptations

With the rise of BL manga/webtoon adaptations, the interest stack will be outdated at some point. Thus, I'll periodically be updating this during my free time. If I missed something, feel free to contact me here on MAL!
