When things happen, things that change your way of being, you become a fearful person who needs to understand their own existence, not wanting to hurt anyone, but you still do it. The people around you try to help you, but you just want everything to end. Two animes that reflect the life of a teenager who struggles with his past, with depression every day, forced to face the most traumatic events.

Post-apocalyptic mecha with a lot of religious imagery and some geopolitical.

Both are about children piloting giant robots, while dealing with their feelings of fear, loss and despair.

Regular teenager gets put unusually large weight on him, in terms of psychological stress and responsibility and has fight this state to be able to protect those around him. Both protagonist don't get along with their fathers, and that's a huge understatement. Both comics explore psychological themes.

-Yuu and Shinji are very similar characters, both going through similar change and experiencing identical internal conflict -Both are a dark take on a popular genre (Mecha, Martial Arts) -They both give off a similar vibe, it's hard to explain, but I think you'll understand when you read it

Both are about an ongoing war againts Aliens. Children piloting mechs to fight Aliens, Similar premise and location setting (both are set in an city at the near future),the military are creating plans to fight off the Aliens ("Angels" in Evangelion),Adults showing no mercy to children. Evangelion and Qko chan both also has an coming of an age theme, but Qko chan doesn't have unnecessary religious symbolisms like Evangelion did

Rahxephon was influenced a great deal by Evangelion. Similarities range from psychology of their characters, characters themselves (Haruka~ Misato, Ayato ~ Shinji, Quon~ Rei, etc.) and visual style (contrast of realistic setting and supernatural elements).
reportRecommended by henrijetica
Both have elements of sci fi and human experimentation against the characters will in it and are also pretty action packed as well too its kind of a stretch but i personally think that if you liked nge then maybe you'll like neji as well too.

Teen characters forced to fight unknown creatures and experience a fair amount of psychological trauma that forces them to undergo changes. Later in the story, a lot of secrets are revealed about the alien creatures and how the game is rigged from the start and most of the events play accordingly to a conspiracy while the protagonists are oblivious to it all. Dark and cruel sci-fi stories with protagonists filled with despair and forced to fight. In NGE Shinji is forced to pilot a giant robot, while in Alien 9 Yuri is forced to have a symbiotic relationship with an alien in order to fight the  read more

Similar premise of mentally troubled youths combating an external threat.

IS and Eva actually have quite a similar plot, they both have high school students operating some form of mecha, that fight against larger opposing forces. By reading both you may notice that the protagonists are surrounded by the opposite gender and that both manga contain a lot of what are now known cliches in the animanga industry. Examples of cliches in both include: the beautiful foreign exchange student, dere archetypes, the beautiful older woman. Remember these are examples in both, if you were to look at both manga separately, you would discover the lot more cliches exclusive to each manga. IS differs with a harem focus  read more

Both are science fiction fantasy series that share alot mecha action as well as a lot of religious symbolism especially judeo Christian in it as well too and a troubled mc who goes through a lot of psychological and mental distress and goes through lot of changes as the story goes by and a quiet reserved blue hair chick too.

Both series have very troubled mentally disturbed main characters and are often put into very tough situations against their own will. And both series have “angels” vs mechs and judeo Christian religious symbolism and themes throughout the plotline.

- Set in post-apocalyptic worlds; - Lots of action; - Plots that revolve around the future of humanity and forced evolution; - Mind-boggling climaxes/endings.

In "Innocent," Charles-Henri Sanson becomes the executioner of France, forced by his family's tradition. Shinji Ikari from "Evangelion" pilots the Eva units to protect humanity from Angels, because of others wanting him to do it. Initially, both Charles-Henri and Shinji attempt to distance themselves from their roles. They don't want to do it, but they're the only ones who can do it. They need to grow and face their responsibilities. If you enjoyed the inner conflict and struggles of the protagonist from Evangelion or Innocent, then you're probably going to like the other one.

Getter Robo is the prototype to Evangelion and probably one of the most important mecha stories written. Pitting kids piloting a mech against monsters who seek the total elimination of humanity, Getter Robo pioneered some of the key elements of Evangelion. Some of the Getter Robo monsters seemed to resemble Angels (specifically Sachiel and Gaghiel) -- perhaps Anno and co. were inspired by Getter Robo for these Angels?

Both include Sadamoto's wonderful high-detail artwork and are based on Gainax projects. The two manga deal with teenage boys, having lost loved ones, trapped in adverse circumstances and follow these boys as they learn the truth about their worlds.

Same ending, similar charters and dynamic.
reportRecommended by StariaSan
The art is what ties these two together, endless bodies born from the same person and a sense of despair as you read.
reportRecommended by 3ggz
Both contain a set of character studies within the mental psyches of the cast and the kind of troubles they go through against their own will by higher powers that be especially from power hungry corrupt adults who think they are doing this for the greater good. And gnostic judeo christian religious influences throughout the storyline.
reportRecommended by Disapeared_Ghost
If you liked the exploration of absent parental role models and how that would damage a teen boy and liked the theme of painful individuality vs the idea of a collective humanity where everyone is one and no one can hurt, but didn't much care for the mecha aspect of Evangelion, this is the manga for you.

Jujutsu Kaisen is heavily inspired/influenced by Evangelion. Both stories are crazy similar. You'll be hyped when you find out. Lastly in easy words, both have similar theme and plot.
reportRecommended by Colasan
Both contain religious themes and motif that takes place in a post apocalyptic setting (Second Impact for NGE and G.O.D. for YGO Arc-V). Though different, Leo Corporation and Nerv are similar as well as Reiji having traits identical to Gendo. Sora's 2nd outfit does bear resemblance to a Eva plug suit though.

Classical seinen mechas with a heavy focus on human feelings, specially loneliness.
reportRecommended by BlindNoldor
Teens protecting the Earth against an alien invasion of angels/dragons and fighting with the invasors own powers adapted to humans. Deep characters, drama and tints of romance.
reportRecommended by BlindNoldor
Aoki Hagane is pretty much a mecha manga, just that instead of being giant robots there are ships and submarines with AI conscience. The overall storytelling is the same than most of mechas, giving instructions from a dock, fields of energy, lasers and stuff, all set up in a war enviroment after an external attack that brought humanity back in resources but above in technology.
reportRecommended by BlindNoldor
If you liked Evangelion, then Patlabor will do the same. Both they are in common(besides the robots)a complex plot rich of suspense and characters well made.
reportRecommended by yakushi
Both manga starts with a kid who doesn't know how to pilot but becomes very good at it, with a father in a higher military position. Awesome mechs battling in a more realistic situation than other mechs. Both Neon Genesis and Gundam 0079 has more plausible mech battles where strategies are needed, compared to many other mech manga which has super pumped up very rigged machines. Not only are there cool mech battles, but it deals with psychological pressure when battling, losing others, and there are a little political aspects to it as well.
reportRecommended by Xtrazi
Both have aliens, which people calls Angels, that invade the Earth, & kids whose mission is to defeat them in one way or another. Both manga also have a lovely kuudere girl (Rei Ayanami/Ai Kujo). Paradox Blue's creators were surely inspired from Evangelion, except that the latter is obviously better.
reportRecommended by RenaPsychoKiller
Both are above average adaptations of mecha anime and both feature military organisations that are out to make major changes to the planet and mankind.
reportRecommended by TVC15
In both stories, humanity is on the verge of being extinct by frightening yet spectacularly designed alien creatures, who seem to be way too powerful to defeat. Nonetheless the protagonists are literally forced to keep trying, (using futuristic high-tech gear or mecha-like suits/machinery, if you will) and experience a lot of physical and emotional pain in order to do so. Both are very sci-fi and come with nice twists.
reportRecommended by Lawli-Pop
A similar level of dramatism and desperation. Main characters, Rock and Shinji are pretty similar and have very deep internal monologues about live and death.
reportRecommended by BlindNoldor
Both are wonderful manga. The vision of life they describe is very similiar, as the description of feelings and relationships. The setting worlds are almost the same, too.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is full of refences to other works. Among them, the Odyssey. The distant and estranged relationship between father and son gives the story vibrant energy and this energy is canalized through violence. But what happens in real life where sons and their fathers see the great distance between them and there are no giant robots to take out your frustration? Danza is an amazing collection of short stories where broken bonds within the family is the main theme. A more realistic and modest narration about all the Shinjis and Gendos out there.

Humanity is under attack by a different live form that threatens humanity's existence, be it angels in Evangelion or devils in Devilman, and the wussy main character is the humanity's chance of winning. In Evangelion, he gets forced to get into a mecha and fight, while in Devilman he gets forced to permanently turn into a demon and fight. The ending is similar, and in fact Evangelion was inspired by Devilman, but I won't give too much details as to not spoil it.

Humanity faces extinction and nearing apocalypse. Alien entities are attacking Earth. Not as an army, but as a small number of individual entities, each one with different properties, each one spelling doom for Earth if they are not stopped.

You read that right. If anything, Nabari no Oh is more similar to Evangelion than Naruto by a loooooooong stretch. Both have existential conflicts revolving around well-intentioned but evasive and fragile main characters (Hedgehog's Dillema). Both are something of character studies; Eva around dissecting and deconstructing character archetypes of anime/manga and unveiling psychological illnesses and general diagnostics on their corresponding psyches, how their upbringings and the events that transpire over the course of the series affect these things, and how they become more primal and relatable problems to ourselves in real life. Meanwhile Nabari tackles the worldviews and ambitions of various characters with essentially the power of Instrumentality  read more

Very similar. -They are both sci-fi action. -The protagonists from each series both have mysterious powers. -The romance between the main characters from each manga is practically the same. -The characters are extremely similar. -Story line is somewhat congruent except for some minor things.

Epic mecha battles, a threat that might destroy the world as the main characters know it. Both of these manga feature some of the most epic mecha battles I have ever seen. The main character in both manga is angry at his dad and fights in order to show this to his dad. If you like one of these manga, there's a big chance that you like the other one too.

These series have compelling plots and intriguing characters. If you like righteous teen heroes and intense, epic battles, check this out!

Both are science fiction stories that contain loner main characters that are forced to help save the world. Perfect for people who dig angsty protagonists.

These manga star children fighting their lives on the line to defend the city as soldiers and deconstruct the main theme that started off as a boom for all anime/manga genre. The teacher and student trio are identical: -Misato and Shinji/Rei/Asuka -Kakashi and Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura As the story goes on, a conspiracy begins to unravel a plot that is said to doom the entire world via a certain plan involving certain monsters to aid in their plan via conquest. One can say that before Naruto, NGE is the thing during it's era for mecha before Naruto did for shonen. If not for NGE, Naruto's plot elements and references would  read more
