Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (23/37 chp)
A pet peeve of mine is when reviewers confuse a story that has elements in that should only be seen by adults with a story that's actually mature. Done lazily or improperly, gore, violence, and sexual content can be as much of a cop-out as saving the day with friendship or good guys inexplicably surviving impossible situations, just for a different demographic. 'Wolfsmund' has enough adult content to make 'Vinland Saga' look reserved and restrained, but lack of depth keeps it from being anything more than a decent guilty pleasure gore-fest.

-Story-

The story is largely a hack-and-slash tale centering around a Hapsburg border fortress whose bailiff ...

Preliminary (3/37 chp)
So this will be my first review on this site, so please, don't judge me too hard :P

I recently bought the first volume as the synopsis and the covers looked gorgeous, and I can honestly say that after reading this first volume I can not wait to get more.

Story(8/10): This manga is set in the alps during the 14th century. Three small cantons which were previously Swiss has fallen under the Austrian empire command, which seek to control the trade in the area. They did this by implementing a guard station called "Wolfsmund" which restricts passage in to and out of the cantons.
The bailiff of ...

Mixed Feelings
It carries a sense of freshness at the start, albeit sooner or later moves onto a fixed trajectory - the kind that is predictable in its uncertainty. The initial shock slowly diminishes over the course of this work, even more so upon the realization that characters are basically cannon fodder for author's own convenience.

It does contain a certain dose of realism and very much stays loyal to the period which it represents. It is evident author did meticulous research on medieval times. However, that same realism quickly disappears in close-quarter scenes where temporary main characters receive a "supernatural" boost in their skills. A cheap ...

Preliminary (3/37 chp)
First I'd like to say I'm providing a review fairly early. I've only read the first volume, and honestly this is more of my first impressions, but I'm mostly making this since there is NOT a single review as of December 29, 2014. That is ridiculous.

Story: 8/10
Notes: From volume 1 you quickly understand that the story is heading in a very interesting direction. Nearly every chapter gives a sort of episodic feel with a new character or a couple or group etc, that is attempting to pass through the gate. The bailiff is a sadistic tyrant, or as I'd put it, a psychopath. I could ...

As far as titles set in the Middle Ages (or whatever fantasy settings that mirror that period) are, there's no denying that the bar for many has been set incredibly high. Such a time period of course embodies the idea "life sure ain't fair, the fuck are you gonna do about it". These stories involving folks that have to flounder about to in order to overcome harsh environments and extreme oppression tend to offer plenty of room for character arcs paved in blood and guts. Stories like Vinland Saga, Berserk, Vagabond, etc all easily satisfy those looking for well-drawn violence and well-handled characters so ...

Woldmund is an amazing, short(37chapters), fast paced and historically accurate manga.

It has bloodshed, lots of gore(which is NOT gratuitous, it is rooted in history). Some seriously disturbing scenes, some amazing war tactics, and lots of gruesome deaths. It is not a mindless action manga. It is a war manga about the cruelties in medieval Europe and the fight for independence of Swiss people.

Story. 8/10
Wolfsmund is German for Wolf’s mouth. Why this name?
Well, this story is set in Europe. Between Germany and Italy lie 3 cantons/states called Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. The mountain people here are oppressed and want freedom.
And the pathway between ...

Wolfsmund is not a story you'll see very often and thus is it definitely not a manga for everyone but if gore and cruelty is your cup of tea then this story is something for you.

story: 6.5
Wolfsmund definitely does not exceed in its storytelling nor is it what the manga is really about. But the existing story isn't so bad that it would a reason to not read it. The story goes as follows:
It's the mid 14th century, Switzerland. We follow a set of main characters who encounter a border settlement, Wolfsmund. Our main characters often don't have the papers to cross border en often ...

Wolfsmund is a fictional history that revolves around Switzerland and its early ages where it was divided into 3 rural communes, Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. The story is mainly about the Gotthard Pass that connects Switzerland to other countries and is ruled by a tyrant. The story is about fighting for freedom against oppressors. The story has historically valid names for places and most people but also has some folklore and fictional part to make it a dark history manga

Wolfsmund belongs to one of that rare historical manga genre that has more actual history but enough fiction to make it interesting. The manga has fine ...

I read this manga years ago, still it leaves an impression on me , first of all its grotesque ,vengeful ,medieval and has a bit of historical significance seasoned with over the top characters, unlike most historical anime this comes closes to have some realism. One thing that will catch your eye is this story has no protagonist, but instead a despicable villain. Most rulers used iron fist to rule and it still persists in some parts of the world today like china and russia.
Many might not be able to stomach the contents of this story as well made characters are introduced in the ...
