Starting with episode 2 I'll open a thread for this, because it's kinda redundant if I keep doing it with both Dunky and Sandileina via profile comments. I'll post your thoughts about episode 2 in the starting post too. Dunky: Loving this artwork! So beautiful. This is the first time I ever recall seeing any kind of story about Jigen's past, except for how he met Lupin (which was shown in a movie). Jigen is just as much of a badass in this anime as he has always been, his dialogue is the greatest. I don't what else to say except that, like always, Monkey Punch knows how to properly tell a story; I have a lot of respect for his writing. This is definitely my favorite anime of the season thus far. Sandileina: I liked this episode a lot more than the first one somehow. Maybe I just got used to the style and everything ^^ Really cool episode. Everyone was great. That Italian woman was really messed-up and interesting, and Jigen was even cooler than I'd hoped. I don't know much about the original (only seen the Miyazaki film, never any of the various series), but it seems that in this version I strongly got the impression that Jigen's asexual. When he was trying to fend off Fujiko's advances he used the word 'onnagirai', which literally means 'woman-hater' but actually is used to mean someone who doesn't have any sexual interest in women, i.e. is gay or asexual. It's notable because it's a very specific term, and he could easily have said 'I don't like women' in a more ambiguous way. And then throughout the rest of the episode there's no evidence to the contrary (he has apparently had sex with that Italian woman in the past, unless that was her making that up, but it's not as though asexual people can't have sex :3). So I thought that added an extra level of interest to his character ^^ Really excited for the next episode - I wonder if it'll be Goemon's turn to meet Fujiko? Hopefully Lupin himself will appear though - I didn't really miss him this episode, but if he's not in the next one I'll miss him I think! ^^ My thoughts on episode 2: I agree, again, on the artwork compliments and the great storytelling. It all fits so well together and creates a unique atmosphere that is even different from all the other Lupin stuff I've seen. It was an interesting move to leave Lupin completely out of this episode, I guess it should emphasize how this show is really mostly about Fujiko. It seems logical that we get a 1n1 episode with Fujiko and Goemon too, but who knows. I too would like to be Lupin in the next one again and maybe Goeman in the one after that? I also thoughts Sandileines thoughts about Jigen being asexual were interesting, I had a similar feeling even though I don't understand those exact words (but interesting to know, thanks). I wouldn't go as far as to say it's my favorite show this season so far, but definitely top 3 (probably top 5 after I've seen Tsuritama, Sakamichi no Apollon and Hyouka) which is way better than I expected before the season. But nothing can compare to my space fanboyism :P |

Interesting observations on Jigen Sandileina! You actually might be on to something there. Because out of all of the Lupin I have ever watched, I don't recall Jigen ever being sexually attracted to a woman or being in a relationship. But I know for a fact that Goemon has had an episode or movie where he had feelings for a woman, and it stuck me as odd that Jigen never had an episode like this. |

Glad you found my observations interesting! ^w^ Episode 3: I LOVE GOEMON. SO MUCH. He's such a great combination of cool and awkward, and so cute when he wondered for a moment whether that kiss made Fujiko his girlfriend. >3< Argh, bless him. I wonder if it's a coincidence that there's only ever been three roles that I've really liked Namikawa Daisuke-san in, and that two out of three are weird samurai. XD Each episode is better than the one before it, which is always a good trend lol. I wonder if we'll get to see the four of them start to meet up properly next episode? At least, I feel it'd be good if Lupin and Jigen started their partnership. As far as I understand, Lupin and Jigen are regular partners in crime, whereas Goemon comes in only from time to time? Correct me if I'm wrong Dunky! xD |

episode 3 Well, even though the episode was good and all, I found it to be the weakest one so far. Probably because of some minor details bugging me a little, especially the fact that this one seemed to be the silliest one so far (including that ending scene). The kid was also a bit annoying plus I think out of the whole Lupin III Cast Goemon is least fitting for a main character role, he's the perfect side character though. Excuse my complaints, but as I said this was still a great episode, just a bit less exciting than the first two were for me. |

EP3 Well for me, the episodes have been consistently good, especially at introducing the characters. What did you find silly with this episode? Besides the sword slicing, that is. Pretty sure it has been a staple of Goemon. |

Envoy said: EP3 Well for me, the episodes have been consistently good, especially at introducing the characters. What did you find silly with this episode? Besides the sword slicing, that is. Pretty sure it has been a staple of Goemon. Well, the sword slicing "technique" rendering everybody naked is one of the reasons I prefer Goeman as a side character. Then the kids, the ending kiss and his reaction and stuff like the one guy he rendered naked (except the boxer) kept accompanying the group for a while, still naked with his machine gun around his neck ^^. But again, I just like to pick on small details because I can write more than about a general feeling of enjoyment. Or rather I often have to analyze my own viewing experience to find out why I enjoyed one episode or series more than another. So most of my "ranting" is just elaborate guessing as to why I often like stuff more than other stuff in a seemingly random pattern. Writing it down also helps me understand my own taste better, that's one of the reasons I'm so eager to simul-watch stuff all the time ^^. Sorry for the paragraph, I guess I felt I had to explain myself before everybody gets the impression I only like to pick on the negative aspects. |

Episode 3: Sandileina said: You took the words right out of my mouth! And yesss, "Did I just get a girlfriend?" was the best line ever; I really like how they are playing up the aspect of Goemon's awkwardness in this series.I LOVE GOEMON. SO MUCH. He's such a great combination of cool and awkward, and so cute when he wondered for a moment whether that kiss made Fujiko his girlfriend. >3< Argh, bless him. I found this episode just as exciting as the previous ones, these are some great character introductions as Envoy pointed out. Sandileina said: Yep, that's spot on when it comes to the original series and to many of the movies. But from what I've seen of Part II (the really long series), Goemon plays a much bigger role and isn't as independent of a guy. But you're right, Lupin and Jigen definitely have a much tighter partnership.I wonder if we'll get to see the four of them start to meet up properly next episode? At least, I feel it'd be good if Lupin and Jigen started their partnership. As far as I understand, Lupin and Jigen are regular partners in crime, whereas Goemon comes in only from time to time? Correct me if I'm wrong Dunky! xD Higashi_no_Kaze said: I don't think silly is exactly the right word to describe it, maybe a better word would be exaggerated, or over-the-top, or perhaps absurd. Silly usually connotes a certain level of immaturity. I remember discussing this with you before, and I think this is probably why I would never really classify Lupin as a silly anime. But I know what you mean. All of these words are close to meaning the same thing, but they all have slightly different connotations accompanying them. Ah, the beauty of the English language.Well, even though the episode was good and all, I found it to be the weakest one so far. Lupin has always waked the line between exaggeration and sillyness (most of the time leaning toward the silly side, but not in a bad way), but the new series tries to be more serious, at least I get that feeling. And so I'd prefer if they stuck to that, but it seems that's impossible with the Lupin franchise ^^. I'm just confused as to how to watch this series, as a comedy with good characters and some action (like many of the old episodes/movies I know) or as a drama/action series with some comedy elements. So far it's walking the line very well, and even though I would prefer to see it fall on one side, it would also be interesting if the series manages to confuse me with this until the end *gg*. |

I've always seen it as an action/adventure series first, and a comedy series second, never the other way around. I mean, I have definitely never watched Lupin for its comedy, I've always watched it for its fun and adventurous stories. I think you're just going into it with the wrong mindset, think of Lupin as having more of a playful attitude than a comedic attitude. Or rather, it's not meant to be laughed at, it's meant to be smiled at instead, if you know what I mean? |

Good Point Dunky, you just made me realize what one of my "problems" is: It's easy to smile at the older Lupin stuff, as it's old and nostalgic etc... But to see more or less the same, old 80's humour in a very recent series, while everything else about this anime is more "modern", is a bit weird. Not to misunderstand, I actually enjoy oldschool humour like in Lupin, Ranma or something like Slam Dunk (please don't force me to elaborate on my definition of oldschool humour, I have none, only intuition ^^), it's just weird and unusual to see it out of it's usual habitat plus in a series that is rather dark and gritty in its other aspects. |

One of my favourites this season. I'm not overly familiar with the Lupin:III series. I've only seen 2 movies and a handful of stray episodes from the 70's series. However these characters are very iconic and easy to relate to IMO. This series is just brilliant I can feel Watanabe's influence in this anime only though hes only in charge of the sound directing apparantly. Also its animated by the guy that did Redline... wow that is just pure awesome. I think the animation can be a little stale at times, but the characters designs are just so detailed. My fav ep so far has to be ep 2 with Jigen. DAT BEARD! |

episode 4 Great episode. Zenigata the perv and his weird sidekick give off a rather different feel than one is used from Zenigata, but I kinda like it. The whole Phantom of the Opera thing was well done too, though it seems a bit silly that she'd burn her face and live in a dungeon to be with him. There must have been easier ways. Anyway, I'm looking very much forward to the second part of this arc. I'm also hoping we see Goemon and Jigen on screen with the others sometime soon. e: Oh, and dat sex scene animation at the beginning was hilarious ^^. |

Episode 4: Higashi_no_Kaze said: The whole Phantom of the Opera thing was well done too, though it seems a bit silly that she'd burn her face and live in a dungeon to be with him. There must have been easier ways. XDD That made me lol. I suppose in fairness she does come across as slightly crazy, so maybe she felt that this was the most romantic way to do it or something. xD Who knows. Oscar is such a little ace with his shooting skills. He's in competition with Jigen and Goemon for my top three. I felt a little annoyed with the writers this episode though for Fujiko just letting Zenigata grope her at random (the sex scene at the start was funny and well done; I'm talking about when he kept grabbing her butt), but the more I think about it the more it kind of makes sense. Fujiko's body really doesn't mean much to her except as a tool, so it makes sense that she wouldn't particularly care. It works because she's Fujiko, but I still feel that the writers are treading a thin line. Lupin the horse, though, was pure gold. xD |

Ep 4 Ayan does seem like she has something missing up there... I mean why didn't she just run away with him instead of burning her face and going underground? Also she threw the mask into the fire.. and she dresses in a weird skull mask thingy and cloak to screw with ppl... yeah lol. I don't remember Zenigata being such a douche before... I know we were never really supposed to like him in the series, but yeah I guess were supposed to hate his guts in this one. I don't remember this Oscar guy either... I'm guessing he was just introduced in this series... well atleast I know what to call the next promiscuous women I meet who gets on my nerves. |

Ep 5 I swear I remember a T.V episode or movie with the same or atleast similar premise. Anyway this ep really focused on the themes of greed and lust especially for Fujiko, I don't think Ive ever seen her so consumed, but atleast she knows when to let go. Never knew scorpian blood was blue lol. I like how the brought the city to life deffinetly felt like an honest attempt at the Middle eastern market place... makes me wonder how it got to be such a common setting in the first place. |

episode 5 This was probably my favorite episode so far. I just have to say how much I love the art and it was perfect for a dark setting like the inside of the pyramid. It was also great to see Jigen, Lupin and Fujiko interact. Her remarks about Jigen "not being Magnum down there" may support the asexuality theory. But anyway his dialogues with Lupin were superb and I found every second of this episode to be awesome. Jigen in the arabic city, Fujiko being consumed, as bottosai put it, and the tricks Lupin pullled throughout the episode. Really great stuff! By the way, does anybody know what happened to Dunky? I think it's been weeks since his last activity in the club :/ |

Episode 5 Good observation Higashi, the artwork really brought out the best in this episode, it was very fitting for the settings. You also already said exactly what I was going to say — I absolutely loved the interactions between Lupin and Jigen, their back and forth dialogue is always entertaining to listen to. Clever dialogue is something I always associate with any Lupin III series. Great episode. |

Ep 6 If this had been any other series and someone just described this episode to me, I probably would have never though of even touching it. School girls with guns, cross dressing and yuri(well not really as we soon find out, there was the blonde girl tho) but yeah, point is just goes to show how exection, style and music can affect something. I also had my doubts about Oscar, but hes proving to be quite the interesting antagonist. I have a lingering suspision that he'll be killed off in the end of the series though, considering this is the only series I remember him in. |

episode 6 Probably the weirdest episode yet. Some focus on Oscar the crossdressing, Zenigata-loving antagonist served as a trap. The sequence of Fujiko's Dream World or what that was was very well done too, really creepy. I really didn't understand why the schoolgirls suddenly had machine guns and followed Oscar, that part bothered me a little. The ending was great though and I agree that Oscar is a valid addition to this series. He's the main antagonist to Fujiko and this series focuses on her after all. |

lawl, totally behind. Episode 5: YESSSSSS, finally Lupin and Jigen meet! A decent episode overall. Some moments were a little odd, but still good ^^ Agreed that the art suited the episode superbly. Episode 6: OH SNAP. I totally thought 'Isolde' was a crossdresser from the voice (good attempt, but not as good as Ishida Akira-san for example), but I didn't think it'd be Oscar!! Oscar's really quite mental. <3 I love him more and more. ... WHAT. XDD WHAT was with those schoolgirls randomly pulling out guns and shooting them?! Oh man. I feel sorry for Oscar. He tried so hard xD;; Strange episode, but I do really love Oscar lol and this episode was another good one. I kind of get the schoolgirls following Oscar now though (though not why they had machine guns of all things xD) - I guess they're like a girl gang? And Japanese girl gangs will follow whoever's strongest. I assume Oscar beat them up off-screen or something to enlist their help?? That's my best guess, but I don't know. It was quite odd. Anyway, I don't suppose we'll be seeing them again, so I'll cheerfully let it go and move onto the next episode~ Episode 7, typing as I watch: Lawl, Fiadel Kestro. Subtle. YES GOEMONNNN. [/joint-favourite character] YAMERICANA xDD equally subtle. Oh my god those planes look so good in the air in that art style XD GOEMON ON THE PLANE. SLICING THE MISSILES. So improbable but so awesome~ Argh, Goemon really is adorkable. Loved that episode. I do want to see Lupin, Jigen and Goemon team up though - these individual episodes are nice, but we're getting towards the business end of the series as it were :3 Here's hoping~ |

episode 7 Indeed very subtly similarities to the real world in this episode. I almost didn't notice. The Fujiko/Goemon dynamic is really interesting, I'd like to see more of that. And I agree Goemon cutting the missiles was awesome. Overall a pretty great episode (the planes really did look great) but I agree that it's time for some episode with all 4 of them. The best one so far was with 3 of them so I'm really rooting for that to happen soon. |

Episode 7 I think I have to disagree with both of you and say this episode felt too absurdly ridiculous for its own good. I liked it as a parody of the Cuban Missile Crisis -- and Goemon slicing the missiles while riding a biplane was as funny as Slim Pickens riding the bomb at the end of Dr. Strangelove -- but I didn't really like it as an episode of Lupin III. Goemon is hilarious, though. And hey, we got our token shot of Mine Fujiko's bare chest in the last scene. |

Ep 7 First of all gotta say I love the OST for this anime, just so great. Anyone else find it kind of strange that she always seems to use her real name instead of an alias? You'd think people would know that shes a lying deceitful theif at this point. XD Yamaricana and Carib... very subtle indeed. Even though i love the animation I feel like they're over-using still shots... I guess thats kind of hypocritcal because my favourite anime uses a ton of still shots (berserk) but those shots are always far more detailed than the regular anime. I guess you could say the same about this series except the whole series is very detailed. Aynway great ep as usual, I have an affintiy for aviation so I love watching planes in action. My only regret is lack of Jigen being a boss. |

Episode 8: That potato gnocchi with ragu sounds so delicious *v* Also, that outfit with the hat might be my favourite of Fujiko's outfits so far. Really good episode, I thought. Enjoyed it from beginning to end, and I didn't find anything particularly silly or too over-the-top. ^-^ And we get to see what the end of the series might shape itself around - that Luis guy. Let's hope for a satisfying last few eps! :D Edit: Oh, wait, I say 'last few eps' but we actually still have five eps to go lol. ^^ silly me |

episode 8 It sounds delicious, but it looked kinda gross, didn't it? ^^ Maybe it was the art? In any case I agree, a very good episode, possibly my second favorite after the one in the dungeon. That fortune teller sure was an interesting character and the Luis memories seem all but pleasant, I also smell some closure regarding this in the last eps. This series is defintely a tough competitor for top 5 or maybe even top 3 of the season for me. So far Sakamichi wins the pot with uchuu kyoudai a close second, the other spots are sill not clear ^^. |

Ep 8 Quite a nice episode, some good action and more of that interesting owl imagry. I also liked her outfit this ep. The only anime where I remember a char switching outfits so much is Michiko from Michiko to Hatchin. The electricity thing was pretty jarring... ouch Ep9 Someone is pissed off. Anyone else thought that the woman was Fujiko at first? So yeah lots of action this ep and she we got to learn a little bit more about Fujiko. Ep10 Okay this is my favourite episode of the series so far... idk I guess I'm just really into the whole surrealism and imagry thing, this episode just did everything right for me. We get some more history about Fujiko too so yeah just a fantastic ep for me. |

episode 10 What an excellent episode. This was more psychological mystery than most series with exactly those tags, and really well executed too. The owlmen are really creepy and the whole not-knowing-what-is-real thing was done very well too. I didn't expect this show to reach a climax of that kind, but now I'm massively looking forward to it. This show keeps changing and surprising me, which is awesome. episode 11 Another very intense episode that showed us the conclusion to Oscar's characters. He was a weird, but interesting addition to this series and made it just that much more quirky with his obsession and envy. These last episodes are amazing so far and I'm positive the last two won't disappoint either. Looking forward to see Jigen again hopefully. |

Ep 12 My bad looks like it going to be 13 eps... maybe even 26? Pretty please? Either way this ep was really great, we finally got new scenes from her past, I'm guessing is more than a little "warped" from what happened in reality. Oscar made another appearance this ep. So he was one of the Fujiko clones? Or did he somehow survive the explosion and dressed up like Fujiko? Goemon in drag.... lmao XD I don't understand why the owl ppl dressed him up though... or why he decided to stay like that... the lulz? So yeah next episode is the last this time for sure... or maybe not. |

Episode 10: Well, that was trippy! In a good way though. I agree with you guys, definitely one of the best episodes in the series so far. I'm so curious to know whether Fujiko's backstory in the original is anything like this, or whether this is a new invention. It's really interesting :3 Episode 11: Ok, THIS is my favourite episode of the series so far. We get Goemon being a sweetheart, Oscar backstory, Zenigata being smart/obsessed, Lupin cheerfully doing his own thing and poor Fujiko being a torn soul. I honestly hold out hope that Oscar isn't dead - I think his character is probably the second most interesting after Fujiko, and I love what he brings to the show. Some redemption for him while he's alive to enjoy it would be nice I think - we'll see though. |

episode 12 The excellent creepiness continues. Very good episode again and I love how Lupin's character alone works perfectly as a little comedic delight between the epic creepy scenes. Plus the thign with Goemon being dressed as a woman, I didn't understand that either. Maybe he hadn't fulfilled his role as a key yet? And I didn't like Oscar reappearing in that circumstances very much. I thought he already had the perfectly tragic ending for his story, but it seems not. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the last episode a lot. Great Series! |

Episode 12: HAHAHAHA, Goemon dressed as Fujiko! ^3^ @ bottosai: Yeah, I wondered that too, but my guess is that the scientists are equally brainwashed into trying to make everyone into Fujiko?? Then Goemon stayed like that because either his clothes were destroyed or it would take too much time to go get them lol xD WHAT. Lol, er, 1) all those doll-like people are prototypes, brainwashed into being the perfect Fujiko or something? 2) HOW DID OSCAR GET THERE? I'm delighted that he's apparently still alive, but, what? XD;; I'm with you Higashi-san, these circumstances of his reappearance are quite... what?? xD;; Really good use of the OP song at the end there. |

Episode 13: WELL. I wasn't expecting those twists at all. Most of the doubts I had about this show are entirely settled. ^-^ Really, really good. Goemon's still adorable (though he did get completely abandoned by Fujiko lol), Jigen's still badass, Oscar's still... Oscar, and Fujiko is freeeeeee. I was going to give this show 87% (highest possible 8), because while it was a very well-written show there were a lot of things that were too over-the-top for the serious, dark tone of the show (obviously I understand that there can be comedy in a gritty show, but I feel like they didn't do it very well). But then I saw the ending montage, and that alone bumps up the rating to 88% (lowest possible 9). :3 So, yeah! I would be really happy if there was a sequel, but I don't think they could match/top this so perhaps it's better left as it is. Thoughts, guys? ^-^ |

Ep 13 Indeed that last twist was really well done. It didn't really effect the Lupin universe as a whole but managed to leave a substantial change in the characters. This illustrated a bit in the last scene where Lupin tries to rush after Fujiko but his car explodes, which is much more like the Lupin of the past. (more goofy/comedic)I guess my only problem is they never explained what was with Oscar? So was that the original one? Was he one of the people that got brainwashed? Is he even still alive... srsly I thought the part where he blows himself up was fine. I lol'd when Goemon was still in drag even in the end of the ep. MAI GAARL FUURENDOO XD. Indeed Jigen is still badass, my fav char in the series, the 2nd ep with him in one of my favourites. What I really liked about this series is how much it just diverged and almost avoided anything that was popular in mainstream anime(well except that episode with school girls with machine guns... but even that lol) Everything for the animation, to char designs to story and OST even the op wasn't very traditional. This anime was just so unique and creative and I've really never seen anything like it before (well in terms of animation/char designs, perhaps some other Takashi Koike works). In an age ruled by moe and school settings this anime just completely went the other direction. Like really I don't think I could have asked for anything more with this, it really was a comibnation of both Watanabe and Koike's styles, their influence really shines through in this anime. This is a 10/10 for me |

Episode 13 Wow, that was positively awesome. Everything fit so perfectly. I loved how they found a way concluding this series without revealing her actual past to stay coherent with the other series. Brilliant! The creepiness was great too again, that fake voice made me cringe. The music was fantastic too and the ending conversation between Lupin and Fujiko was very good too. Not to mention the golden comedy of Jigen and Goemon battling each other on drugs xD This show just had so much style. From the unusual opening to the artstyle and the music, adding to this the good old Lupin Flavor of characters, dialogues and gag comedy and you've got somethign close to a masterpiece. And I was especially amazed to see how well they delivered the creepiness and psychological aspects of the last episodes, especially considering the sometimes a bit too silly humour of the first half. And even though I agree that sometimes the sillyness is a bit too much, I can't agree with Sandileina because this is a central part of Lupin and it just adds in so much of the retro flavour and nostalgia in a series that otherwise is quite different from the old ones I've seen. Different character focus, different art, longer arcs, darker and more psychological - but the gag comedy (which also partly defines some of the characters) is still more or less the same. I give this show my highest possible 8 (85%) because a) I can't give them full credit because they already had awesome characters to work with and b) it wasn't perfect and even though I liked everything they did, I didn't enjoy it as much as my 9's. Still a great show and one of my favorites this season. I'd love to see some more newschool Lupin series, possibly focusing on another one of the side characters next time? I can still dream, right? ^^ |
I probably regret this post by now. |
