it was nice to see Askeladd again, so Thorfinn gets some more character development and vows to part from violence, wonder how long that will last

sucks that we wont get another chapter for 2 more months

"I will never hurt anyone ever again"

Man, that's a pretty bold statement. I really hope things work out, although as said in the manga, it definitely will be a struggle, and he's gonna have to put up one hell of a fight.

Thorfinn was always good at fighting and killing, but it seems he will be needing a different type of strength now.

Haha. First thing I read the chapter I knew poeple are going to be disappointed with his resolve. I wonder, have those people already forgot about Thorfinn's father?

Yea, obviously the answer isn't refusing to fight. It's fighting a cause worth fighting for. Taking down a certain corrupt king, a king Thorfinn himself helped to become a king seems like a good cause to me.

Hated thorfin new resolve. He is a warrior in the middle ages, what else is he good for? Is Thorfin an intelligent character that will rationalize a pacific solution to solve the many problems and injustices around him ? Is he skilled enough to neutralize his opponents without killing them (like Rurouni Kenshin)? I don`t think so, he has been a soldier, a lethal weapon , always letting others do the thinking for him.

Thnks for th link Ore-no-Username. Just in case I want to say I am not agaisnt character development. I will like for Thorfin to change into something else, but the guy went into his personal hell, he was told to "became a real warrior" and "go and take the ones you killed with you" . And what does he makes out of this ? He will atone for als his murders, okay I can see that, no more senseless killing, like Manji or guts, Cool. But the he says " I will not hurt anybody again", that phrase is not Guts, Manji or Kenshin, not even Balsa. The times are hard and the guy is good with violence, what is he going to do now? Talk down his enemies? Is Thorfin now ghandi?

Nope, he looks more like Mother Teresa to me. Will probably get a gender change later on and Vinland Saga will transform into a border-H 4-koma gag manga.

I'll always love Thorfinn, Emo or not. Whether he's killing people... well, that's just a minor detail.

Yeah right...... or maybe a yaoi manga, thorfin and his farmer buddy are already having a bromance, and since they are not having any luck with women it is the next logical step. Either that or thorfin try his hardest to be ghandi and fails and becames like kenshin. I think it is 50-50.

Ugh, another dream sequence where a character makes a heel-face-turn in one chapter just like Canut? The character development in this manga is so frustrating, it's the only major thing holding back the series for me. Still, it will be interesting to see how the series will progress with a pacifistic Thorfinn.

Agreed. I don't have any qualms about his new ideals at all. But still, I won't be surprised if when all hell breaks loose, Berserker Thorfinn will come out again.

It was a dream, in dreams anything can happen. Anything.
And Askeladd was the cause of Thorfinn's killings in the first place.

LOL guys, guys, GUYS! Do yourselves a favor and read chapter 12-14 of the manga again

And if you people honestly tell me you didnt forsee that Thorfinn might follow Thors' footstep[s (funny how many of you actually mentioned the guys dad...pretty forgettable character wasn't he? [/sarcasm] ) stop reading the manga. Seriously.

Ghandi, Guts, kenshin, Manji, Balsa? How about Thors?
well you do realize its a fan translation, right? he obviously meant..well..like I said, read chapters 12-14.

PS: The dream sequence was really awesome

Peace, love and unity all the devils you got to beat if you want to survive in the world of history ( joking ) :)

He didn't kill Bjorn either. I think the dream sequence was showing those who didn't find the true meaning of being a warrior.

This. It seems like all the wrong people are reading this manga...I hope Yukimura has a set plan for the story and sticks to it 'til the end instead of being influenced by fan responses (though by what he has done so far, I think it's safe to say he does what he wants).

Sigh... first when the manga was on the verge of becoming a really epic tale with him siding with Canute to conquer England they split... then he becomes some empty headed farmer slave... then this... I hope this trend stops before the carebears and ponies start to appear :(
Needs to fix this sometime but I'm lazy - since 11/05/2009

It's a sad inevitability that the common reader would want to see the main character slaughtering people all throughout the story, regardless of the plot, themes and character development. I mean this is why manga like Bleach are so successful, they satiate the reader's bloodlust, the need to see endless battles and special techniques and catchphrases.

Vinland's not that kind of manga, just roll with it peeps. Planetes wasn't your casual sci-fi manga either.

Sure it was fun seeing violence in a historial setting, but there was always context for it. Thorfinn was never a typical battle manga hero, he was presented as a vague character treading a thin line between tragic victim and menacing aggressor.

So basically some of you guys have no right to act surprised or disappointed at the turn of events lately. The direction the story is going in was on the cards long ago. Admittedly I thought Thorfinn would actually get his revenge before realising how pointless it was, so kudos to the author for robbing the character of even that.

Good to see Askeladd again, and great depiction of the netherworld.

It seems Thorfinn will follow on Thors' footsteps. And am I the only one being reminded of Edward Elric every time Thorfinn pops up on the page?

This was on the cards all along, but the way he got there was no way what I expected. Good development from the mangaka.

On a side note, living amongst Vikings in the Middle Ages without hurting anyone will be quite a bit of a challenge.

That was beautiful, though I doubt he won't have to hurt people again. In this regard, Thors was wrong too. Because he wasn't willing to defend himself and his friends to full extend, he paid for it with his life in the end. Thorfinn will probably realize that he will need the blades to protect himself and others
