I got into this series after seeing a gif of what I now know to be Mustang crying and saying "It's starting to rain now isn't it." I had to know what that gif was from because the line was beautiful and because I wanted to start an emotional anime. I finally got to see the context it was in. I was just thinking in the previous episode that Hughes was probably my favorite character. This series has been amazing so far. I cried a bit, I'll miss him. Onto the favorite anime characters list you go, Hughes.

The one thing FMA has over brotherhood - Hughes' death was much more emotional given that we actually got a chance to know him his time. I teared up, I'll admit.

Nooo! Hughes was one of my favorites! And poor Elicia... Can you imagine how much Ed is going to flip when he finds out?? Though that was kind of cool how Hughes's "ghost" waved goodbye to him.

So freaking sad! -- 5/5

Very sad episode, but the fact remains his other merits, which is a good script a narrative that creates even more empathy for the characters and the countless details that are in addition to others already received. The plot is always more interesting, soundtrack excellent as always, I'll go to see the next episode.

Damn 3v1 bullshit. I can only imagine how much worse this would have been if I actually saw this as it came out and I had to wait a while before the next season.

Shame Hughes died ..., I feel so sorry for his wife and Elicia, especially when he had that touching moment before reading into the war and Douglas.
I already thought it was weird the Lieuitenant would have known where Hughes was, even though Hughes catched on to the mole thing, it wasnt enough :/

I wonder if this Sloth person also has a similar skill to Envy.

What I like about this version of Hughes' death over Brotherhood is the scene on the train when Ed sees the apparition of Hughes' spirit waving farewell. Something about that made my heart weep. Hughes was very much a goofy father figure to Ed; not exactly a father, but definitely an older male support figure. The only one Ed had. And Hughes' death is the major turning point in this series. It's as if Hughes is waving to say, "Have a safe trip, Ed. You'll do great in life. I have faith in you." It's something Hughes would definitely say if he had a final moment with Ed. Hughes was a great man, and a great father to his daughter, a great husband to his wife, and a great fatherly support figure to Ed. This scene definitely exemplified that, I feel.

Whether or not that's the reason I love that scene so much, I'm not sure. Something about it feels so spiritual and beautiful, though, and I definitely do think that's part of it. Scenes like this are what Brotherhood lacked, and is what makes 2003 feel much more sophisticated and somber. I love 2003 for this reason.

It would have been nice if they gave him a bit more dignity before killing him off. He had no plan, no backup and didn't tell anyone what he was doing as he tries to face off against a threat that has shown to be incredibly powerful. Disappointing to see a good character die like that. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for the information Hughes had on the homunculi to be given to the other characters so the story can move on.

I believe he didn't want anyone else involved or to put anyone else in danger. That's why he fired his secretary and strong-arm kept his mouth shut

When Hughes was saying to his daughter that he has a lot of work to do, I got scared for his family. Then when he was making the phone call and a picture fell out of his pocket, I was pretty sure they were going to kill his daughter. I was desperately hoping he's only injured :( This death really got me :( And I thought this was going to be another family/friends/nakama anime where everyone survives and lives happily..... I got slapped in the face :(

Been watching this simultaneously with Bro'hood (and I regret doing so), and man, this proved to be much more dramatic than the latter. I had a drop of tear roll down my face ;_;
Been watching simultaneously as well and have to say that FMA did this way better. The scenes were more emotional and better executed, I especially in terms of atmosphere and soundtrack. Brotherhood didn't achieve the same emotional depth, also because they added comedy scenes in between. Normally I like them but here they were misplaced.

Poor Hughes <3 This is what's so cool about Full Metal Alchemist. It's so down to earth. In a lot of other animes, it is unthinkable to kill off a comic relief who also has a family. Hughes died to make FMA awesome!
That's a great aspect of the show for sure. Just gets you invested in the characters so much more because it adds that realistic danger. Kinda reminds me of how GoT treated it's characters...

So, the plot thickens, as they say, huh?
The moment I saw Führer (forgot his real name) give Huges the green light for further investigation, I thought he might end up dying. Still, I was sad it actually happened.
Speaking of Fuhrer...I have found him to be kinda suspicious for several episodes now. And after this secretary incident, he seems even more suspicious; I wouldn't be surprised to see him be revealed as a villain/have a skeleton in the closet/sth like that (haven't seen Brotherhood yet, so this is just a guess).
I have my suspicions about the Führer and his secretary as well. Wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be involved...

As a last remark: why would he meet with Douglas alone if he already knows that she's involved in it and is most likely leading him into a trap. Strange logic. Get some backup, man!

In Brotherhood, it's sad to see Hughes' death but in FMA03, it's painful as they gave him more screen time and made emotionally attached to the audience.
