Totally agree. This ended with the typical "happy" ending, but there was relatively little drama. On top of that, 6 episodes wasn't really enough to get me drawn in. Some parts of this show felt too rushed.

Short, but good.
I liked it, specifically the story and characters (And Ezaki's seiyu was awesome ^^).
Deserves for something like an 8 or 9 in my book.

Hmm? Really? Think about it. Immediate death would incur a less tragic and traumatic ending.
But since she apparently lived for quite some time, their relationship would only get stronger, making it a bigger shock for him when she would eventually die.
Truthfully, even though it was an immediate "happy ending" of sorts, in the long run it will turn out very tragic and solemn.

I revisited this anime after 2 years, and bawled my eyes out again. One of the best anime out there.
Question though, what is the name of the classical song that plays through various parts? Anyone know?

Really bittersweet series. Beautiful and sad at the same time. I was going to give it a 9, but 6 episodes were really too short, everything felt rushed.

Things I liked:

- the opening song
- most of the images in the opening, a couple of which were actually quite artistic
- some of the lines were good
- the romance wasn't terribly overdone
- the fact that I didn't have to force myself through it (not that I know why, but I wanted to watch it for some reason)
- there was only one unnecessary character that crowded up the stage
- it didn't drag on for too long.

Things I didn't like:

- the porno collection, and how Rika got so mad at him for such a terrible reason, not even listening to him. I might mind less if it wasn't in every anime ever.
- the zebra theme, as well as that character. There's no way in hell I can take it seriously, especially right before the climax of the series.
- Yuuichi was frustratingly like other typical main characters.
- it wasn't very believable. I've been through a very similar situation, and I've seen how people behave, and it's nothing like this. It's not hard to imagine, either; everyone's seen drama and despair in their life, so there's no good reason why writers can't at least somewhat imagine what it's like, thus avoiding garbage like Akiko's friend trying to have sex with Yuuichi.
- On that note, who the hell is she? Why do we care about her? Why was she laughing and crying at the same time? Why does it matter? Are we supposed to care? I didn't; I was like "k wtf", and I made a silly face. What an awful blunder.
- I found the characters shallow. I understand that it's anime, and characters have to be bastardized in order to survive on TV (eg. Valkyria Chronicles, or any manga adaptation that you were frustrated about), but come on. A lot of animes manage much better characters than this.
- Natsume's character development was saved until after he was established as a drunken jerk. Way to go, writers.
- They completely abandoned the fact that the surgery was "like a surgeon's nightmare", which they ended the episode on before. I guess they changed their minds, or did I miss something?
- Dialogue overall was pretty bad up until the last episode or so.
- Voice acting failed often enough, especially with Natsume.

Overall:

left me with a resounding "ehhh", and I couldn't bring myself to feel much by the end. Kind of good in places, but it was dragged down by the lack of character development, bad directing, awkward decisions in writing, unrealistic script*, and lack of any real originality or depth (think really deep; things that touch you emotionally on a deep, personal level, not just things that make you cry).

*yes, that part at least needs to be realistic within the boundaries defined by the anime. In this case, it set a rather serious tone, so cartoony things like zebra man were terribly out of place. Since it set a serious tone, and didn't entirely deliver it, not only are we left with aforementioned awkwardness, but with badly conceived scenes like the rooftop fight (which would never happen), and Natsume yelling in anguish seemingly because he was drunk, forgot that his cigarettes aren't actually chocolate, and chewed on one, releasing seas of chemicals into his angsty, 20-years delayed brain.

It had some good moments, but I can't really say I liked it very much. The opening was pretty good, though. I think, honestly, it had a good concept, but was fundamentally limited: dying girl, random guy who devoted himself to her in spite of death and the angst flowing out the ears of his doctors. It's quite beautiful, that way (leaving out the exploding ears, I mean), but there were so many issues with the execution that it failed to come across as well as it should have.

Darn it, got distracted and lost it all. Rewriting from memory :'(
I thought that was a great ending to a 'sweet?' series.

The main reason I enjoyed it so much was probably because of the Natsume character. (Not that I particularly liked him) It was one of the first series where they've had a character so left behind from a death like that, usually i'd see the character as all 'I miss so-and-so, but our time together was so happy that i wouldn't give it up for the world, and i'd do it all again without a second thought' and then you have him, who I saw as not necessarily regretting it, as he obviously loved her, but seemed so stuck in wondering what he could have had if she hadn't happened, how negatively it had affected him, or something.. Then what advice he'd give to Yuuichi when seeing him in a similar position, or something.. Well, I found it all quite interesting.

I loved the zebra masks. They were so out of place they made me lol everytime he came up on screen, and I was in hysterics when the brother turned up. I didn't like the Akiko's friend storyline bit, maybe it was just me, but it seemed like they were suggesting guys in that position who feel 'heavy' or under pressure or something are going to sleep with anyone who offers, and thats bullshit. (I hope, never having been in a similar situation)

I also loved that the ending DIDN'T go any further than it did, it didn't show them getting married, it didn't show her dying, it didn't show how it then affected Yuuichi and left it just as they're two people in love, and are going to make the most of their time together.

happiness is something we need to hold on to when it comes
and hold on to it the longest we can even if it'll be taken away
those memories of our time will remain and live on.

I was hoping for a tragic end
Though it ended on a happy note i didn't mind since it wasn't the cliche happily ever after ending (by that I mean Rika was going to die within the next few years instead of a perfectly normal life where everything was magically fixed by some unlikely fate at the end)
overall i enjoyed the romance with the little bits of comedy
i do however think that the whole Akiko's friend hits on Ezaki scene was unnecessary.
overall I give it 8/10

This is probably one of the best endings I've seen to an anime. It fits perfectly with the powerful message that it tells. We see what life is like for the couple during the ending credits in previous eps (getting married, etc) so at least they live happily even if it's for a limited time. Only complaint would be that it would have been much better if it was 13 or 26 eps (I mean, there are 8 volumes of the novel that could have been adapted!).
Never thought a 6-episode series could leave such a lasting impression on me with its two main characters and its powerful message...

This anime was awesome.
Her condition is awfully sad but it can't be helped...
Anyway it was a kind of happy ending with him deciding to "give up everything" for her.
And what Akiko asked was also very deep ~ what is more important, your own happiness of the happiness of the person most dear to you?
I think that opened Natsume's eyes a little bit and it maybe hat a consoling effect.

10/10 (favo.)

Best regards

what a garbage garbage ending to a mediocre show. "Men have everything, they just don't know it." WHAT? There was no point in that line and they executed it like it was the central theme of the show. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, what with the nice allusions to Les Thibault, but that was ridiculous, the direction was piecy and uncoordinated, and this show was corny. I want my 2+ hours back!

Yeah I didn't enjoyed this anime either, although I'm so romance and drama fan, this one was so-so for me, It looked like it lacks something, maybe the whole story wasn't that touching as I wanted, more drama would be better, also ending was okay, from other point of view, the point that the girl will die, and that guy doesn't want to waste precious time it was okay, but this anime is full of imaginable stuff, how he so easily admit, that she will leave him behind, If I would be in his place, I would cry like baby whole time, losing someone important to you and knowing that eventually she will soon leave you behind and you don't have enough time to do everything what you wish and that your marriage won't last long, how could he so easily accept it?This anime lacks reality. That doctor which beat up the kid in hospital, what kind of retarded doctor you have to be to beat up patient, because of your harsh past? I could go on and on about this anime, the main theme of it is great, but it lacks realistic aspects, they just filled this anime with imaginable world where everyone can easily admit and accept harsh truth, lol...Humans are not robots, they can't admit it so easily, because the pain is too hard, and in this anime kid just cried randomly few times by reading book, but it wasn't enough, and his worried face made me facepalm and laugh hard...I wasted time by watching this, if they would make it more realistic with normal-human-drama, now they just made fairytale with idiotic ending.

great anime bittersweet ending idk

"I am the bone of my sword,
Steel is my body and Fire is my blood,
I have created over a thousand blades,
Unknown to Death,
Nor known to Life,
Have withstood pain to create many weapons,
Yet, those hands will never hold anything,
So as I pray, unlimited blade works"

Hmm, was fine to pass the time - I liked the characters. The series itself, wasn't that moving, not that much drama - lets just say other animes have had an impact so to say (like key's work).

The ending is the best possible outcome - if you consider what you went into thinking will happen when you started watching - I was sure someone will die - but everything turned out "semi"-okay, if you know what I mean? So nothing was really sad or moving, everything just went fine.

7/10.

This was good to burn some time (and bandwidth). I would have to agree that maybe Rika dying would have give it more interesting ending as the possibility to contrast how he and the doctor handle the aftermath would have made an awesome ending.
Personally i would have love to him drop dead at the moment he decides to use that rope to get to her room. He had to convince Rika's mother to be able to talk to her.
7/10 - This wasn't bad, but it doesn't shiny either

Oh 6 episode where more than enough. A 12 or 24 episodes format would have made this painful (not emotional... just like "jezus make them stop bitching and get it over with") to watch.
huh?

I agree! Amazing that it told such a strong story in 6 episodes. I want to believe that she will get the heart transplant and go-on living....amazing story.

BTW: I recogize all the characters in the Wedding photo - all except one - who is the girl on the right? Is that the model?

Kind of a boring romance. Yuuichi has to do all the work to form a relationship. The only contribution Rika makes is no longer being blase about dying. There's no mutual chemistry. The rest is just typical hospital romance angsting.

I like the theme they pushed here, but I feel like I wasted my time watching this. Just SO completely mediocre, with really unbelievable drama all over the place. I can't get over nurses and doctors literally punching and kicking their patients... like, really? I get that anime isn't always realistic, and I'm fine with that, but fuck that's just completely ridiculous. The way they turned that into legit srs bsns drama just rubbed me the wrong way.

There was no chemistry between the couple, and Yuuichi's actions in just the previous episode where he slept with that woman have me wondering "Okay, he did it once, when will he do it again?" Also, why the hell should I care about that woman? Like, she was crying while laughing after getting discovered and then we never saw her again. Wtf? She showed up in a car, tried to sleep with Yuuichi, and we never saw her again. K then.

My expectations were decent, but this was so... blah. Should have spent my time doing something else. 6/10
