THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The biggest selling point of this series is the ability to do very interesting
animation of motion. So the scenes in the gym have been a highlight of
each episode. But this time basically nothing happened in the gym, and
even the action that could be seen was extremely limited.

After the stellar success and excellent production quality of Yuru Yuri (2011)
and YuruYuri♪♪ (2012), I guess it was natural to think that the combination of
Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (CGDCT) and a Random School Club (RSC) was
a sure-fire recipe for success.

When I say "RSC", I mean some random, ill-defined school club. So I don't
mean a series like K-On!, which is CGDCT, but which is set in a legitimate
school club, specifically the light music club. As far as I have been able to
determine, Yuru Yuri was the first CGDCT which was set in a school club
that was basically random. Another example of CGDCT is Teekyuu. But
Teekyuu is set in the tennis club for a school. So that is a legitimate, well-
defined club. It is not RSC.

But the CGDCT+RSC that followed after the two seasons of Yuru Yuri were
Yuyushiki (2013), Kitakubu (2013) and now "Tesabu" (2013). Please correct
me if I am wrong, but it seems that there have been three failures in a row.

As much as I love all of these series, I am forced to admit that not too many
other fans are joining me.

At this point, I don't feel too much optimism that CGDCT+RSC will ever return
to its former glory.

I think Aiura is another good recent example of iyashi-kei school comedy, but episodes were like 3 minutes long. Still it's a good show, you should try it. Love Lab and A-Channel are kinda related too.
Yuruyuri and Yuyushiki were pretty popular though.

Today's Tesabu was better than last week's, as always my favorite scene is the ad-lib, the VAs sure are having fun. Yua went into some weird territory again (they sure have freedom) and Koharun was finally bullied for her ability to say funny things in a boring way. Poor Koharun.

About the gym scenes, I get the feeling that they were planning to do a lot of things with those but dropped them altogether later. I'm guessing they don't have as much freedom to do what they want as they did with gdgd Fairies (magic, lots of freedom to do weird funny stuff).

Still, listening to Tesagure! Radio-mono it seems the staff guys aren't very good at jokes after all; they have a section where the staff has to come up with some atarashii clubs, and most of the time they fail hard and end up being made of by the VAs.

Also now that you mentioned Kitakubu, somehow I'm really missing that show. I loved the atmosphere and how the staff had a lot of freedom (I heard it was mostly an amateur staff). Sadly a lot of people disliked it vocally.

Yuyushiki did really well last I checked, and was a stellar series. I'ts unfortunate that Kitabu was less popular, bu it was inevitable as a lot of the humor was much more high level than usual.

This show has barely been subbed, it's a short, and it's in full on 3DCG. That's three strikes against its potential popularity. The first one only really affecting fans outside of Japan, while the other two affect everyone. It also doesn't help that the show has less plot than these shows normally do by quite a bit. It's just four VAs sitting around a table and talking about random stuff basically. Other similar shows tend to have more scenes that involve actual actions and scenes that relate to character fleshing/growth.

I'm not all that surprised it's not doing too well.

I wonder how Teekyuu is doing though? It's made it to three seasons so far, so it must be somewhat popular.

I think it's fairly popular in Nicovideo (they upload the episodes there too).

Only now did I realize that the lyrics of the OP actually describe the visual images shown on the OP !! Silly me....

I would have thought more clear reference to Tennis Prince when they talked about tennis club, but I guess they cannot go too far.. Still I love how the 4 characters basically fully establish their personality. I actually had some good expectation of what to expect from each of them now and they have not disappointed. The facial impression CG seems to be continuously improving too.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I am quite curious about how well "Tesabu" is doing compared to other anime
series. In particular, I want to compare it to the previous examples, of
CGDCT+RSC: Yuru Yuri, Yuyushiki and Kitakubu. As far as I know, the best
available objective measure is Blu-ray/DVD sales. The only method that I am
aware of to access the numbers is through Amazon Stalker. I was looking at
the numbers the other day, but I have not pulled them together in order to
present them here. In addition, I was making comparison with some other
series which are presently popular, just to get a feel for what the numbers
mean. The procedure involves a number of steps for me. If there is somebody
here who knows a faster way to access these numbers, I would be happy to
hear about it. Another relevant anime series is Non Non Biyori, which is the
spectacularly-popular CGDCT series at the moment. But of course it is set
in a small school in a rural area. There is no club. So it is not CGDCT+RSC.
Apparently, CGDCT+countryside is a very successful concept.

Regarding their facial expressions, I find it hard to be objective. For me, I am
able to relate to these characters at an emotional level. They are human and
relatable to me. Indeed, the four different personalities are very easy to
distinguish.

Regarding the lyrics, vonPeterhof mentioned this after Episode 3. At that time,
I came across this version of the OP where somebody had added the lyrics
in English. But note that you have to activate the YouTube "CC" feature in
order to see the lyrics: (They can be turned on and off.)

Tesagure is doing better than most expected in terms of Stalker prediction but it is still low at slightly above 1k.

Okay, thanks. If Amazon Stalker is predicting above 1K, then I see that as good
news for fans of "Tesabu". 1K is certainly "poor". On the other hand, it is not
"crash and burn". Tesabu has done poorly. On the other hand, it is a radical
experiment. The fact that Tesabu has not been a disaster means that it has
enough of a following for the production team to be given a chance to make
another series using the same technique. I forsee them being given a slightly
higher budget. Perhaps they can spend a bit more time working on some
aspects to improve the entertainment level. Frankly, Tesabu is the anime series
that I am most excited about at the moment. I am very eager to see what
these people are going to create next. Frankly, I think that the 3DCG is good
enough at the technical level. But I would like to see more detail added in the
backgrounds. I would like to see proper character designs for the supporting
characters. I would like to see more action scenes, and not 100% of them
in the gym. The concept of 15 identical sisters is innovative. However, it is a
very thinly veiled excuse for being too lazy to design a few more characters.
My impression is that character design requires a bit more effort in 3DCG than
conventional 2DCG character design. But this is just a guess.

A dubbed version of Episode 8 finally was posted on the streaming website that
I usually watch. Unfortunately, they used the audio track for Episode 7. So now
I can see Episode 8 and read the subtitles, but I can't hear the correct audio
track. This makes the situation worse than before it was subbed, since it is
harder to enjoy it without audio. As far as I know, the original non-subbed
version of Episode 8 is no longer available.

What's going on?

I enjoyed the cliches they explained about tennis. But wearing old panties when playing... not a good idea lol.

It's so fun because the clichés are always right
