This film has one fault, the rape scene. It had no impact. It just happened and no one cared about it afterwards. All the characters made it look like it wasn't a big deal.

But other than that, this film is brilliant. It's really a metaphor for the human struggle to find meaning. The MC starts off without any real purpose but soon becomes goal driven after meeting a religious girl and falling in love with her. The story was simple enough, and the politics in it weren't too convoluted. And the ending gave off an amazing amount of depth by just using atmosphere and visuals.

Speaking of visuals, holy crap does this movie look amazing. Being the second most expensive anime film (Steamboy being the first,) everything in it looks fluid and vivid. It's on the same level as GitS and Akira, maybe even higher.

It's a wonderful film, and a definite candidate for enlightenment.

Wings of Honneamise isn't just a classic movie from the 80s - it was technically impressive for its time and it is still today considering the year it was released (1987), and features a very meaningful, well-written story that is very uncommon (if not unique) in this medium.

The movie is actually about how the main character elevates himself from being an inept with no real goal in life to becoming the symbol of humanity's scientific progress (and many would consider science to be the greatest achievement of man). This is a story about Lhadatt rediscovering himself and finding a meaning in his life and overall - it's very down-to-earth.

The movie presents this world in which Lhadatt lives in its societal and political aspects as we are shown glimpses of his daily life as well as important events that affect both him and the world around him. The world-building and theming is very subtle and never feels forced in any way, and the result is that the viewer can easily immerse him/herself in the vision of this movie, and notice the great detail level and care given to every texture, background, frame, and object on screen.

Although the movie does have a few flaws, I believe they are not enough to detract anything from the overall experience, and while this may not be everyone's cup of tea, I consider this movie to be an extremely rewarding watch and relevant in the medium.

It's hilarious and beautifully animated.
Though seriously, I loved the way they managed to incorporate so many silly and humorous things without losing grip on the serious aspects. That history montage at the end was unfortunate though, it was too painfully obvious for my tastes, but not necessarily bad.

The main character's development was also great. The way the film's focus moves from the main character to a broader view on society and humanity, and having it parallel with the main character's own development, made for a very satisfying watch.

Full review will probably be up tonight, the weather is way too beautiful to be sitting behind a computer (who am I kidding?).
"The view from the bottom of a well may not be much, but you can see the sky and the stars really well. My world is small, but since I'm looking up at space night after night, you could say I'm a frog on a universal scale. When you gaze up at space all alone like that, the back of your mind goes quiet, and you feel as though you've gained an extraordinary amount of wisdom."

The movie is fading from my memory, but while I did enjoy the dialogue, pleasant portrayal of realistic men at work, grounded science, great aesthetics and fine animation, the pacing was inconsistent, the plot a little aimless at times, the ending was abrupt and there were 2 awkward scenes that kind of soiled things. The realism and attention to detail with the blue collar daily events was certainly noteworthy, but the core plot is a little light early on, and the big details don't become very apparent or urgent until very close to the end which makes it seem kind of rushed to me. The ending was a tad self-indulgent with reveling in the glory of their accomplishments and the accomplishments of mankind in the past, and it takes priority over rounding out a solid conclusion after the launch which left something to be desired. Then there's the infamous rape scene which is bizarre and is detrimental to the foundations of the main characters as individuals and their relationship together which they attempt to mend shortly thereafter but didn't help matters too much. Lastly is the really long chase scene that--while nicely choreographed and animated--took far too much time and kept elongating itself whenever it looked to be finished, wasting quite a bit of time which could've been used for padding out the ending. For me it was a nice one time experience, and as Gainax's original work, I do respect it, but I didn't enjoy it that much, and feel that it could've used a lot of reworking with the aforementioned hindrances I talked about, so it was nice, but didn't use its running time as optimally as possible I believe.

Unremarkable

I don't know how I feel about the film. That attempted rape scene made me very uncomfortable. That was more than a romantic gesture. Much more.

I really enjoyed all the allegorical sin and war content, but that just wasn't enough. The MC had some major developmental flaws, as did his love interest. The last scene shows the evolution of civilization, but mankind did not seem to truly evolve as much in this alternate universe. Modernity and space exploration were portrayed to be the pinnacle of societal progression, but nothing was really solved by this country's technological power play.

It was a very good film, but I just didn't feel that it accomplished all that it set out to do, so I cannot justly vote it into enlightenment. I was hoping to read more discussion and was open to voting for enlightenment, but no dice.

Excuse me if I’m going to use a superlatives but I’m really thrilled about Honneamise.

Wings of Honneamise The one most powerful, well-made and inspiring anime movie I have ever seen. Everytime I think about Honneamise I get goosebumps and even compared to real-action movies I can’t think of any movie who presented the meaning of civilization and humanity better than Honneamise.
And that is really suprising if you think about it that it’s story takes place in a parallel universum having practically nothing to do with our world. The world building is very detailed, differennt technologies, political situations - all brilliiantly.

The story is controlled by trials and tribulations of political conspiracies, religion and the whole feeling of pointless hits the watcher almost as much as the main characters.
Lhadatt a completely loses his friend because of a superficially pointless job that the government only still pays for because they need it for their plots. Lhadatt is in a existential crisis until he finds purpose again thanks to a woman (who is very troubled aswell and finds her purpose in religion).
It’s completely understandable that he falls in love with her and wants more but as I already mentioned she also has problems of her own and rejects him. That’s the point of the “rape”-scene. It’s meant to make the watcher feel uncomfortable and therefore it’s a stupid reason to dismiss Honneamise because of that scene.
I don’t want to go too much into detail here so I’ll make this short: the very wide variety of different characters with their differing personalities, objectives and philosophies was EXTREMLY well-presented and VERY believable - especially the main character.

The story, especially the ending which is metaphor for something that’s so beyond words and yet so important and moving like human progress, is birlliant. The more you think about it the more goosebumps you get. The only minor flaw about the story is that some of the chase-scenes were a bit pointless and probably only there to show how greatly Gainax could animate.

And that they proved. The animation was outstanding, so detailed, fluid and well done. The only other anime which are on par animation-wise would be Akira, Ghiblis, Redline and maybe Ghost in the Shell.

I don’t really understand most of the critisicm in this thread.
Why would you think that the ending didn’t have a solid conclusion?
The hate for the rape scene is not really fair.
What are the major development flaws you talk about?

Many people seem somewhat concerned with the rape scene, including myself. So I'll give some quick thoughts on it, as it was one of the best scenes of the film for me, even though it probably won't matter at this point in time.

Lhadatt is at that point faced with the possible outcome of his actions, the rash decision he made for impressing a girl might end up being exactly something she'd hate. He goes to her because he selfishly wants to be with her, though doesn't dare to face her directly. His attempt at rape is at a point where he's starting to understand his effects on others but doesn't yet see his own responsibility for it, he reverts to being a spoiled brat as a way to overcome that. Though when faced with the girl's fear he sees how taking poor decisions can end up seriously hurting someone, as it did with his impulsive decision for becoming an astronaut.
He tries to apologise, once again in an attempt to escape responsibility, because an apology is like saying 'let's pretend it never happened'. But he receives thanks instead, greatly increasing the importance of what he did by contrasting it with his own feelings. This shows him not to act just on his own desires and feelings, but to think about the consequences first.

Not the most coherent explanation, but I don't have a keyboard so it'll have to do.~
