I'm not even a huge Monster fan and I'm really excited!

I'll definitely be watching this, and regardless of the gratuitous amounts of sex and violence that HBO shows tend to have, it's highly likely it will be very well written. HBO have some of the best writers in the business so I'm very much looking forward to this.

I should probably finish those few episodes of Monster I've been putting off for months...

Wow I should hurry up and finish the show then. This sounds exciting, I feel like it's better fitted to a live action series anyway.

This problably is the one of the best news I have read on MAL for a long time. This is just amazing, and I'm pretty much speechless. If this pulls through, we're in for a real nail biter here!

Yeah, but Kratos, I'm just worried about this...

if they americanize it (ie. set it in america, have all the characters be american etc.) then the whole thing will be worthless.
i'd like for them to cast an english speaking japanese man as tenma, and have the whole thing set in germany. but this won't happen.
it sounds good on paper, but when you think about it, it won't come close to the source material.

Inb4 Kenzo Tenma -> John Smith

Oh wow, yeah, that could be kinda off. But seeing how the show actually takes place around Europe, I'm not that worried, but if they are to change it to American setting, I will be a bit disappointed.

BKA Lunge -> FBI Agent Pierce

Don't see why they'd change it to an American setting. HBO has plenty of shows that don't have one.

Me excited about a TV Series?
Colour me surprised.

I'll be scarred if this turns to nonsense, so I pray for the best.

PS: What are the odds Tenma that will be a real Nihonjin?

Ho-ho-hoooooly shit, this is awesome news. If they pull it off and cast the right guys (the casting of Johan is so very key to this series working), it'll be a smash hit.

I don't doubt Guillermo Del Toro & HBO can put up a quite good show, however the great storyline is here and the second big test will be the cast they'll choose.

I mean, they actually pulled of a reasonable decentl ASOIAF adaption.
You've gotta be kidding me.

In other news, this show is going to be terrible, if it ever actually gets made. So I hope it doesn't.

Game of Thrones is better than your favorite anime.
MAL says we have high anime compatibility, but it looks like you haven't seen my favourite show. And I've actually read the actual ASOIAF books, I know what a "decent" adaptation would have looked like.

Having read the books I can tell you straight that no one would have the resources to make an TV adaption this good besides HBO. And it is good.

Monster can easily work as live action but since its HBO expect copious amounts of sex scenes. D: Also, who is sexy enough to make a good Johan?

Neil Patrick Harris anyone? :D

Yes please.

No.

He's too old to play Johan.

Johan is what 22-23 at the oldest.

Neil Patrick Harris is nearly 40.

Johan needs to be young, charming and slightly effeminate
for reasons that are important to the plot of the series.

Wonder how they will pull off Johan and Nina being twins?

This man knows truth. Nobody thought that HBO could pull off a successful adaptation of ASOIF, and they managed to do it.

There's also the fact that the ASOIF series is much harder to adapt than something like Monster.

You're forgetting this is Hollywood. NPH is in his 40's, but as he long as he doesn't look it, it'll be fine. He looks like he might actually be in his 20's.

GoT's Araya Stark is played by a 16 year old girl. Arya is only 10 or 11 right now in the series, but you would never know that unless you looked it up. The actress just doesn't look her age.

I was actually thinking Zachary Quinto would be great as Johann.

He was the most enjoyable part of AHS, and in both seasons he has shown qualities to that of Johann's.

Del Torro is a hack and tbh a bit of a bitch. Once he rage quits (as is his MO), I expect HBO will get someone competent and actually talented to do it. Should be good.

If it's done by the screenwriter of Sherlock I'm actually quite curious to how it will turn out. I loved Sherlock, and Monster is great, the combination should make it into an enjoyable tv series, I think.

the casting of Johan really is the hardest part that will break or make the show. hmmm...is the guy who played Loki pretty enough for Johan? lol

Hiddleston seems like a pretty boy, but as people have said, he might not be effeminate.

Damian Lewis would be awesome as Tenma. Could even get Michael C. Hall since Dexter's last season comes out this year, and it doesn't seem like he has anything planned.

Id prefer if we could get an Asian guy for Tenma. Maybe Kaneshiro to attract more fans. He speaks English but I dont know if he has an accent. He does look like Tenma in this pic.

Oh my goodness gracious. I don't wish to be tempted with false hope. I mean HBO is perhaps the one TV Network that could actually make something like this happen in a satisfying way.

But still, I have a feeling it will fall through. Never seen an American adaptation of a manga/anime before.

Monster would not be adapted from the anime but the manga.

Secondly, Monster is NOT like most manga which are based in Japan and have an all Japanese cast with the majority of the things being about Japanese culture.

Monster's cast is almost all European....and it's set in Europe.

It's a very mature manga, and I think it would actually be easier to make into a real life drama than 99% of manga/anime.

Yeah when ya think about it Monster is in an almost solely unique position to be adapted to live action. I mean it just had all the right ingredients and people love this type of thriller murder mystery story.
