I made it "Vision of Escaflowne" instead of just "Escaflowne" because it sounds way more pretentious and elitist that way.

Vision of Escaflowne is now up for vote. Decide it should stand among our elite titles or if it should be doomed to relations. Someone else can edit this later and make it more clever, I'm too tired.

Please remember that with the new voting system ONLY YOUR WRITTEN RESPONSE WILL BE COUNTED. Be sure to clearly state which option you chose at the top of your post or else your vote will not be counted. You must also provide a brief explanation for why you chose the answer you did.

AT THE TOP OF YOUR POSTS. THE TOP. NOT SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OR AT THE END. THE TOP. STATE YOUR VOTE. We need this for counting purposes later on.

PLEASE DO NOT VOTE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE ENTIRE SERIES.

This poll will close in 7 days. BEGIN!

AGAIN. THE TOP. TOP. TOOOOOP OF YOUR POST. NOT. THE. BOTTOM. Please. =)

It's a good series with one of Yoko Kanno's best soundtrack. The series was originally conceived by Kawamori (creator of Macross) on a visit to Tibet was it? The show went through some changes on its initial phase (kawamori left the project because it was put on hiatus). The story was meant to be 39 episodes long, but ended up 26 because that was all the money sunrise allocated to the production crew when production resumed, so the story had to be condensed. You can really feel it at the beginning and at the end (a lot of exposition at the beginning and and certain parts, seemingly important characters--the 4 generals of Zaibach--are marginalized. Fanelia was supposed to be longer, the time skipping in the last few episodes, etc).

Escaflowne does a good job of mixing up shoujo elements with shounen elements while at the same time making sure not to delve too deeply into either side. Hitomi was intentionally designed to look tomboyish. The guymelefs are refreshing for Mecha. The mix of mecha and fantasy works well. The world of Gaea is beautifully drawn and at times feels full of life.

Fantasy, mecha, and shoujo.
A twist that works real well.

First one

Escaflowne is a pretty great show, simply for doing concept that been done to death, so incredibly well. The story is easily one of the tightest I've seen in an anime, there is like zero amount of filler and every episode leads perfectly into the next. Hitomi is a pretty likable character in the sense that she ins't ungodly annoying and actually acts like a real teenage girl, and her relationship with Van seemed genuine.

Also the theme-song has a bagpipe solo, nuff said

I can only second this, Escaflowne is a great genre mix and a wonderful take on each of its seperate aspects on top of that. One of the few shows that imho really show how far you can take a standard plot within a certain genre.

This is still one of the best adventure anime, and the romance elements are really well done. As Neane said the only problem is that more episodes should have been done.

Typical example of writer sitting on top of a dedicated crew and taking a dump. Everything else is great, but the writing is bad. Really bad.

Every rule the show makes up gets ignored later on and characters occasionally act out of character and everything happens at the convenience of the writer.

One episode Hitomi is all "Oh no don't use my powers for war" and two episodes later she goes "Please let me help you fight Van!!~"

Pretty much everything after the introduction of the "Fate alteration machine" becomes asspull after asspull.

the soundtrack and animation are the strong points and that should not be a reason for including it.

It is still an above average shows for many reasons but it's by no means a must-watch classic unless you're a lot into 90s anime. Voting it because it's a classic is honestly dumb as this show is overall not that much better than shows that come out every year and get ignored because they're not from the 90s.

Anything I could possibly elaborate to show how this is not a good show can be seen in this review: http://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=13834.

It pains me to say so, but option 2.

I'm a fan of Escaflowne's director Kazuki Akane, and I think he did a good job here. I can also see bits and pieces of Escaflowne in Birdy the Mighty: Decode and Noein. And I thought the first 15 episodes of Escaflowne were excellent. But episodes 16-19 were very awkward, and the final episodes, while good, ran on information introduced in those episodes. The writing could have been much, much better.

Of course, I do think it has excellent animation and music, and as I said before, the first 15 episodes were very good. I almost voted for option 1, and maybe I'll change my vote, but I'm pretty sure option 2 is where I stand now.

Escaflowne, like others have said, is a great blend of demographics, featuring good characters, music and world to live in.
It's a fantasy for everyone to enjoy and possesses a well-done romance element.

Option 2

Ahahahahaha. No.

I have a 1001 problems with this anime, but I'll only stick with the major faults. First, Hitomi's powers. They do practically anything, from telepathy, to wish granting, to fortune telling, to unveiling invisible mechs, to teleportation. There's no limit to its uses, and the writer abuses this to pull some of the most hilarious Deus Ex Machina solutions I've seen in a while. This makes for some really lazy writing.

The next problem is the characters. They're flat. Especially Hitomi (who can only think about her romances, even when at war), Van (who can only think think of fighting, even when at peace), and Dilandu (who managed to breach a dimension flatter than one dimension). This coupled with some characters that are there just for the hell of it (Merle), really hurt the story.

Lastly, it's too didactic. It's incredibly preachy to the point that it sacrifices the plot and characters to satisfy the themes (very elementary themes at that). Stuff like war is bad, violence is wrong, and love is the highest power, really end up hurting the show if that's all the show aspires to achieve.

I won't go any further. Valk already posted a link to Beatnik's review which I believe covers most of everything I want to say.

Amber, thanks for Option 4. It's the best thing since sliced bread.

animation and sound were very good for that era but same thing I can't say about story and characters.Things always get explained with hax powers of hitomi with no end in sight.Want to show past of someone hitomi will see that, want to explain something hitomi will explain. Some of the side characters were just there for the sake of being there(cat girl).I like the fast pacing of show but NO for enlightenment list.

In retrospect, Ducat made me realize there was a lot of contrivances to the story but I was so enamored with how exciting, fast paced and joyful it was that it all slipped under me. There were also some nigh-arbitrary elements and even some episodes which didn't really fit like Van merging with Escaflowne subsequently leading to an episode where he has to get treated by that magic council and whatnot only to have Van from that point on become a fighting demon who barely gets scratched for the convenience of not treading through that repair stuff again. Personally I didn't mind the characters because as far as I recall they had some development that was a little subtle but seemed fair to me, but contrarily the conclusion was the opposite of what I wanted, basically in place of Inuyasha's ending which would've been more suitable in Escaflowne and vice-versa. That being said, the series was still a blast, so I think I may finally have found myself in that 1 & 2 purgatory everyone talks about. I believe it is a must see for how entertaining the story is at face values with the love trysts, mythos, adventure, twists and some other good elements, but with some considerable drawbacks and some episodes which are basically pointless. I'll stick by the 1 though because it's a must-see as is regardless of its faults. P.S. That episode all about luck would make a brain-corroding drinking game; just count how many times they say "luck"...
