FLCL has been gearing up to slam a bass on all your foreheads in the attempt of swinging into our Enlightenment list or getting run over by a vespa in the depths of Relations hell.

Please remember that with the new voting system ONLY YOUR WRITTEN RESPONSE WILL BE COUNTED. Be sure to clearly state which option you chose at the top of your post or else your vote will not be counted. You must also provide a brief explanation for why you chose the answer you did.

PLEASE DO NOT VOTE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE ENTIRE SERIES.

This poll will close in 4 days. BEGIN!

Option 1.

FLCL, to me, is more than just an OVA. It is art in motion.

FLCL features great characters, authentic guitars, fantastic animation, and a great ending, not to mention stellar music.

FLCL does in 6 episodes, what many animes with 20+ episodes fail to do.

For these reasons, I believe that FLCL deserves a spot on the Enlightenment List.

Option 1.

I agree with VentusCross. Plus, this is the titles that introduced me seriously to anime in 2004.

FLCL didn't need a plot, but there is a very good coming of age story here.

FLCL did a great job of spoofing many anime titles that were famous then (and now). and also did a good job of spoofing itself.

FLCL is a laugh a minute story that never gets old no matter how many times I watch it.

FLCL is an example of how Studio Gainax did such wonderful work early in it's career.

FLCL definitely belongs in the Enlightenment List.

Option 1

because it's got a vespa.

JK, I won't be voting here, just wanted to share my love for Haruko's Vespa SS 180.

I'll just second the posts made before and probably after this one.
Option 1 because it's fucking FLCL.

It's awesome. No further explanation.

I'm going with Option 1 with FLCL. It's a coming of age story that becomes transcendent by the use of psychedelic animations, whacky characters, and the self-mockingly pseudo-existential Gainax writing. It is wholly self-aware of the subject matter and does its best to transform a mundane self-discovery narrative into something extraordinary.

Option 1

Normal logic is not enough to express what FLCL has to say. Problems and solutions are all totally overblown; strong emotional reactions erupt into fighting robots and pink-haired aliens smashing them with guitars. It doesn't make any logical sense, but it's not just random; there is a sequence of events, and it does mean something, while its crude, self-deprecating humor keeps it light and easy to take in. The animation looks amazing, even if it can't decide what it actually wants to look like, and the soundtrack rocks beyond belief.

It's pretty awesome that FLCL is getting pretty much unanimous appraisal in this thread. The series seems to get quite a bit of hate on these forums.

Anyway, I think it's an easy option 1. I love coming of age stories and this is a very unique spin on the theme, with some of the very best music in anime. I agree with VentusCross, FLCL is pretty much art.

Wow, nothing but a tide of Enlightenment votes... *cough* ...well, this is awkward. I can't really speak my full mind yet, because I still need to finish the series. But from what I've seen, (which is a paltry 1 episode) I really didn't like it. Guess I'm off to go watch it before I say any more...

To quote the show:

"Eating ramen that tastes really bad can be kind of fun, too."

If you do watch it, you might not like it, but it'll probably leave an impression. At the very least, you'll have seen something unique.

You're not alone.. I only watched episode 1 and I'm not feeling it, aside from the stunning visuals and music. I'm going to try and finish it before the poll closes.

"It is made of excellence and deserves to be on our Enlightenment list."

Currently standing as my #5 all time fav, FLCL is a bizarre, hilarious and impactful coming of age story filled to the brim with symbolism that may seem a little easy to pick up on, but is incredibly insightful and adds a whole new dimension to the story. It's also very heartfelt and doesn't pull any punches, going full throttle with its experimental story and not treading on any details or holding your hand. I probably elaborated on it more on the Enlightenment thread, but in the end, I loved almost every second of it with my only gripes being that it is a little slower and unfocused in the first half than in the latter, but is still immensely fulfilling.
