Now to those new to JJBA, or those whose awareness of the series comes mainly from internet pop culture, you may find yourself rather lost or even severely disappointed with Phantom Blood. So, I thought I'd dedicate a blog post - spoiler free*.

Here's the short version (see the blog post above for a longer one):
If you're picking up the anime without prior knowledge of the manga and wonder what exactly the fuss is about, I would like to point out that rather than think of it as a really long running manga with 100+ volumes, it’s more appropriate to think of it as 7 different stories that loosely tie into one massive verse.

This is a crucial distinction to be made because Part 1 - Phantom Blood, is VERY different from the latter more famous parts, be it in terms of art style or story style.

In other words, please do not be
1) disappointed because the notorious Za Warudo/Toki wo tomare DOES NOT appear in this part
2) brand it as overrated on the get go, because most of the hype surrounding JJBA is not so much about this part but the latter parts

*Apologies in advance if such acts of shameless plugs are scorned upon.

That's why I'm afraid it won't be particularly popular, at least not in the west and and least not enough for it to get the numer of episodes it deserves (like 500+). But we can hope, good try on your part, thanks for that.

I have a good feeling that it will get to Part 2: Battle Tendency. As long as it gets up to Stardust Crusaders (Part 3 and ultimately what JJBA is most famous for), I'll be a happy man. Those two arcs are by far my favorites.

Part 4 need to be animated too. Hey, the anime does'nt need HS like Naruto shit or else. So, I doubt even if we did at least 6 part reached 500 episodes. It must go through the part 1 to see more oart. I like it even if very brief and did not last long.

@grandy_UiD

The first part will be about 12 epsiodes. It not a lot.

i wish for them to be able to reach part 7
you are right that many people would probably dislike just because of part 1 but you cant start it with part 3 or 2 right?
you need to see all parts from the begining to understand the most epic story in the manga world
and part 1 is not so bad ripple is awesome and we get the whole story of the begining of the rivalry of the jojos against dio and his many acquaintances
wow this is cool

Thank you for this post, I was wanting to get into this series, but not really a fan of reading manga through online scans on the PC unless it's a series I already picked up. I just wanted to know that this anime starts from square one without needing any previous knowledge.

I'll keep in mind that this isn't one of the parts Jojo is famous for.

Then they will just watch modern crap or something like this. Phantom Blood is the origin story, it's mandatory for understanding the storyline in the series. The first episode was actually quite good, a playful version of the manga.

500 episodes?

Jojo is pretty fast paced, they can animate all the arcs in 200 episodes or even less.

that'd be half a volume per episode...yeah, no fucking way.

(Although 500 might have been an exagerration on my part)

What, no "Za worldo"? Intant drop

Kidding :P Although I'm going to have to go read the Manga I was caught off guard by the looks of Dio and JoJo with them looking like normal human beings and not the hulk on steroids like they are whenever I have seen them in the past, thanks for the post hopefully this info will come in use later on in the story.

Considering the fact that anime burned through the first five chapters of the manga in one episode, I bet we be at Battle Tendency by the beginning of next year.

Seriously, Phantom Blood is one of the best parts. I would say to anyone who haven't watched it to not build any spectations waiting it to be like any other anime that they've seen. Just watch and let yourself enjoy it.

^You can't be serious? I've yet to read Battle Tendency, but Phantom Blood was really weak. I heard that it was supposed to be the worst of JoJo, as it gets better later on.

In fact, parts 4 and 8 (the currently publishing one) are the only parts that take place strictly in Japan.
Apart from that we have: England, America (in three different parts at different times), Italy (in two parts) and a bunch of countries (mainly Egypt) in part three.

Thanks for this guide Nilvius.

I was one of the people intimidated by the amount of volumes and the amount of parts that currently have no adaptations.

I will definitely follow the 2012 anime now, and read the manga, if it doesn't animate everything.

Shameless self-bump.

I'm very much aware that JJBA isn't for everyone and that there's bound to be people who dislike. Nevertheless I hope that it would at least reduce the number of people who are condemning the show on the whole base on just these two episodes (if the episode threads are of any indication).

Oh, I don't care about the trolls. Just the ones who really are new to the show. I mean, how do I put it, even if it's someone disliking it, I hope that it's at least for the right reasons, e.g. don't like the art style, think it's too cheesy or over-the-top, as opposed to the whole "generic/ boring characters" because they think Jonathan's going to be the main character the entire time etc.

Actually, 500 episodes may not be an exaggeration after all. Long running series like Gintama or whatnot that are at like 40 volumes are adapted into 200+ episodes ( I cite Gintama mainly because it doesn't have any notable fillers) and JJBA is easily more than twice that length.

Though of course, I may just be an old man by the time I actually get to see SBR lol.

From my count... Gintama's got a little over 30 filler episodes in total :D

Currently, about 40 volumes of Gintama has been adapted and even if we ignore fillers and recaps, that's still easily 200 episode.

JJBA all parts add up to 100+ volumes so 500 episodes really seems possible.

If they were to animate all of the first six parts, I think that part 5 would get either the highest number of people watching, due to the high number of bishounens, or the lowest ratings due to de dubious quality.

The quality of Part 5 is really good, with a lot of the most fun Stand battles and memorable character designs of Jojo contained within it. The only major problems I have with it is the Big Bad's ridiculous power and the cop-out ending that came along with it. But then, cop-out endings are par for the course after Battle Tendency.

The only Jojo part that I don't like very much is Stone Ocean. Who knows though, maybe an anime version would make it seem better than it did in the manga.

That's funny, because all the fights in part 5, barring one or another, were pretty damn tiresome. They seemed to last like forever.

Also the characters were pretty bland, excluding Guido and Bruno. The character design on the other hand was good, I'll give you that.

I was honestly going to drop it for the very reason that I thought it was overrated and far too over the top.

However, this thread has changed my mind. I'll give it till the next part or so before I make a final decision.

Thank you.

I thought it was quite boring when I first read it one year ago but then the anime start and I try getting into it again. I didn't even get to the part of Dio being vampire on Phantom Blood last time I read the manga since I can't bear it but the anime helps and I was willing to go through Battle Tendency because I am hooked.

Now I am already at Part 4 of the manga..

I have mixed feelings about Jojo (the 2012 anime). If I don't like the general direction of how GAR and superficial everything is, is there any chance I'd like other Parts of the series? I'm more a proponent for deeper storylines and/or characters.

According to your profile, you haven't seen Part 2 yet. It starts in episode 10 and is much better than Part 1.
From Part 3 onwards characters are getting less and less MANLY. There will also be more attention for supporting characters and not just one protagonist stealing the show.
As for the story, it's different in each part, but they aren't really deep, more action/adventure.
