The Most Beautiful and Sophisticated Landscapes in Anime

I know there's an old topic somewhere, and I found a recommendation topic, but I want to form a collective thread (preferably if you can include pictures) of beautiful landscapes.

Bring on the Makoto Shinkai's. the Ghiblis, the pseudo-Venices, and any hidden gems that's not as popular as them!

Currently, I'm in love with Aquarion Evol's landscapes. The character design is average but God, the landscape is like a cross between Aria and Shinkai's. It's scenery porn at with a sci-fi tint at its very best.

I hope this doesn't count as spam, because I really want to know some hidden gems if possible. And enjoy series I haven't heard of or have heard of but never took the time to enjoy them.

off the top of my head i remember eureka 7's backgrounds were the most unique ones ive seen, they werent greatly detailed but they had this warp thing to the ground that made it very recognizable

The scenes of the "another world" in Clannad had beautiful landscapes.

But I think that definitely, the best landscapes I've ever seen are from 5 Centimeters per Second.

Damn, I was hoping to be quick to this topic so that I could state my obvious two choices, but Kyuubeys beat me to it!

I would choose 5 centimeters per second over Clannad any day though in terms of landscapes.

Haha, that's true. Clannad's landscapes are pretty, but it's more because they make me emotional. 5 Centimeters had unbelieveably gorgeous landscapes.

5 centermeters per second has fantastic scenery, but I think children who chase lost voices from deep below beats it.

Last Exile also had some really good settings, kinda cheating there but whatevs

And Mardock Scramble had great ones too

^ Holy crap that first one is so detailed. My goodness. What a sight to behold.

Saw a couple of more episodes of Aquarion Evol just now. This show has such low replies in its discussion forum compared to other popular shows this season. The consistency so far is amazing. So many different sceneries, so many simple yet detailed looks.

First thing that interested me when watching Aquarion EVOL Ep 1/2 was how incredibly high quality and detailed the scenery was when they were riding the boat. (got ninja'd)

The Place Promised in Our Early Days had really amazing scenery too. Though these days, most new movies always do. Break Blade for example has amazingly high quality... wasteland scenery. Lol.

Lol high quality wasteland landscape.

So vast, empty, and detailed arid land texture. My god. I am putting this movie series on my PTW list.

I almost laughed that the landscape is SO GOOD that the character designs, a bit average if left alone, seem weak in comparison. Even Aquarion Evol suffers from this, and its character designs in general is better compared to many series. Even the non-up close character styles look fluid and detailed.

Pretty much, yes. But Aquarion Evol got another thing going for it: the absolute corniness and wackiness the show offers. And a bit of nostalgia factor because I watched Genesis as a kid.

@ Another: Eh, for a series in 2012, the art looks surprisingly retro? (not a bad thing surely)

@Hanasaku Iroha: Wow, I haven't even heard of this show before. Looks beautiful and detailed without even being supernatural/fantasy/scifi.

Even though 5 CM/Per Second had great artwork, the fact that the story was insanely boring and hardly even there ruined it.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu had some of the best artwork I've seen.

I don't understand in the slightest why people complain about Clannad's artwork. It has the most memorable and detailed city I've seen.
Dont touch me I'm in despair.

Not really a landscape, but I do love Bakemonogatari's unique and shifty scenario

Then there's Madoka Magica, which has a just plain beautiful scenario both inside "magic barriers" and outside it them.

They're the only ones I find truly worthy of note, I love these shadowy and "different" art styles/landscapes/scenarios.

There are many beautiful "natural" sceneries in Spice and Wolf. Although, it's a given since the show is somewhat focused on travelling the world slowly. Also, the timeline of their world is long before technology advanced.

Oh yeah, there's a beautiful pagan wolf deity known as Horo too. ^^

Yeah a lot of beautiful landscapes are easily forgotten even though just about every anime with a bit of art direction should have them, it's just that most animes don't really focus on the scenery like how obvious they are in Ghibli or Shinkai productions. And there are plenty of varieties, too.

Maybe I'll search some in Arakawa (it's by SHAFT as well).

My my, you know your scenery porns. I wanted this topic to tackle some hidden gems instead of the usual fantastic work of Ghibli and Shinkai but man, this is awesome. Although I'll probably never watch them since their story isn't my kind of thing... but still, wow, these are some rare works, looking at how many people have seen it on MAL.

Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai's films have those in spades. In a more recent example, Ikoku Meiro no Croisée has beautifully reproduced backdrops of 19th century Paris. The very first shot you see in the series is the Notre Dame Cathedral, and it is absolutely gorgeous.
