Spotlight Character: Ayumu Kasuga (Azumanga Daioh) MAL Character Information Page: Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga MAL Favorites: 2350 For the next week I would like to have everyone familiar with this character discuss what they think makes it an exceptional character. What attributes make it stand out in the ocean of interesting characters that exist in the realms of anime and manga. Unlike the other two subjects I will not force this conversation to fall into any set structure. Characters that are nominated typically get here because they are adept at breaking the existing character moulds and defying definition. | Was she funny? Absolutely. Is that enough in of itself to be inducted into this club? No. |
| Charming and unorthodox. I appreciate how she dodged every major anime archetype that existed at the time, and I loved her nonlinear thinking as well as her laid back attitude. For a moment, think of Mr. Bean. Was he funny? Yes. Simple? Yes. Would anybody in their right mind deny the popularity and impact of the character in the scene of comedy? I doubt it. Likewise, I believe that Osaka deserves credit. We usually have unreasonably pointlessly anal high standards in this club, but, c'mon, she's from a comedy series. She's given a designated role and she does a damn good job of playing it out. |
