Opening with a waking eye reminded me fo the tv show Lost. It was even used to highlight this episode's central character.

I really liked this whole story, especially the sociopolitical themes concerning nationalism, the reception of iconic figures, and the self-worth that swimmer derived from his discipline. My favorite part was when he let himself float underwater and the camera angled itself slightly upward, capturing both his suspended body and the beams of sunlight.

good ep. The guy fell hard, but he did stand up in the end and found his purpose. I like that theme, reminds me of the rainbow episode from mushishi
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

How easily our fortunes might change. The doping brings to mind that of Armstrong - obviously in quite different circumstances though, and not nearly as politically charged.

On the one-hand, the episode was pleasant in its simplicity. On the other, this also made it seem somewhat trite.

Good ol' Keaton charging in for the promise of sausage.

Boy you felt bad for the guy. It's one thing if you intentionally cheat, but if you were unaware of it like this....man how far you can sink...
