Spotlight Character: Rakushun (Juuni Kokuki) MAL Character Information Page: Rakushun MAL Favorites: 78 For the next week I would like to have everyone familiar with this character discuss what they think makes it an exceptional character. What attributes make it stand out in the ocean of interesting characters that exist in the realms of anime and manga. Unlike the other two subjects I will not force this conversation to fall into any set structure. Characters that are nominated typically get here because they are adept at breaking the existing character moulds and defying definition. Because of this freedom I encourage everyone to do their very best to stay on topic and keep any and all debate civil. | if my memory serves me correctly, he serves as nothing more then a moral compass, popping up at the right moments to make everything clear and show what the right path is? that being the case, it would be hard for me to vote yes for him. does anyone think that my assessment of him is fair/accurate? |

| @ Ghostxlix Not really, but sort of. He is, and Youko herself says this, the one who saved her from becoming the cold hear-ted killer she could have been and was also a large part of Shoukei's development. If you really want to generalize, though, I guess you could say that. But, I can't vote for him. He was definitely one of my favorite characters; because, he was mature and just an all around likable guy. He didn't let the natural distrust of his race get him down and he was probably responsible for some of the best dialogue in the series. Also, his character design is ace. But, imo, Youko is the defining character of Twelve Kingdoms and is the only character of the show that has to be inducted to represent the show. I'm just not a fan of more than one character from an anime or manga being inducted. Sway me. |

| Slightly off topic but while I'm not a fan of the induct "everyone and everything from a franchise" bandwagons, I also dislike the "don't induct X because X is already on the list" logic trains. It's tragic that Youko is no longer on our list but it really shouldn't affect Rakushun; either you think he's a qualified character and deserves a spot or you don't and shouldn't try to hide that fact. The reason I'll be voting no on Rakushun is because, like many of the characters in Twelve Kingdoms, he exists mainly to illustrate a concept rather than to function as a character. He was there to illuminate aspects of their society/world that would otherwise have to be directly explained to the viewer or he was their to offer insight/perspective. The moments where he was given the chance to interact with the world, make choices and define himself were few and far between; I suppose it could be argued this dynamic was a function of the world and not the character but I'd refute that such a claim ultimately supports my point. |
| @ bbobjs Actually, I either just forgot or didn't know she isn't on the list. And, you're right that I shouldn't let her influence Rakushun's induction. And, I never thought about how you point out why he shouldn't be inducted. I honestly don't have a damn clue how to vote for him. |

| I remember liking him, but now I wonder if that was only because he was the only grounded character in the entire show. |
