Because Ryu-san got so little screen time and development, the drama that followed his death felt sooo out of place and overblown, especially when you consider that they already lost dozens of soldiers in the guerilla led by Ramba Ral... and that they didn't seem to give two shits (I mean, if we hadn't seen a couple tombs we could have easily forgotten it had even happened).
And Bright crying his eyeballs out seriously... lmao

a little unintentionally funny this ep but it was still quite good, though that mourning scene was way too over the top.

Well of course, when nameless mooks die nobody cares, even though they are just as much members of the crew as anyone else... when Ryu dies everyone throws a fit... that mourning scene was just too over-the-top to stomach...

In Bright's defense, he said the crew's inexperience killed Ryu and all of the other crewmates. He took responsibility for everone, even though Ryu's death put it over the top.

Wow another heart breaking episode T__T

First off yay we got some Hamon service before the fight :)

Yeah there were already red flags as soon as Ryu started talking about launching in his condition.

I'm surprise about Hamon's fascination with Amuro O___O

I wonder if Matilda-san feels the same?? Amuro might be happy as hell when he sees that!!

So Hamon and Ryu both dies.

Yeah i kinda feel over dramatic since they just started dying even though they lost a lot more in the previous episode.

I guess they really didn't expect Ryu to die out of a sudden.

And lol why is the yellow hair guy has the same hairstyle as Amuro. Just change his hair to Amuro's and they'd be both brothers!

I even lol'd when Amuro said it maybe Hayato's fault too, but it's everyone!!

Singling out Hayato XD

And what the hell, your NOW asking advice Bright even though you never once listened to him :P

At least Sayla is more realistic since all they can do is fight in the middle of war.

Oh well i expect more deaths soon.

Can't wait to reach Zeta Gundam though. Heard that season is full of deaths X__X

R.I.P Ryu.

I got a bit sad when they were all mourning and than instantly started laughing when Amuro yelled and it echoed and panned to a shot of the sun for no reason.

I wouldn't have minded as much if they had mourned the deaths of all the other crew members in the last episode. I don't mind that it was dramatic, but was a bit overboard.

It still made for a pretty good heroic sacrifice.

Things seem to be getting more and more desperate for the White Base. They'll need outside assistance soon at the current rate.

Now we all know that Bright is an asshole. He's treating Amuro like a shit because he's insecure. He can't accept the fact that Amuro saved their asses multiple times.

Ryu's sacrifice was unwise imo. There must be another way to destroy that plane.

Yeah Bright was heavily relying on Amuro to bail them out due to his inexperience as a Captain but never took into account the things Amuro was going through and I think after this encounter with Ral he didn't want to fight anymore, he didn't want to kill people(did the bright slap happen before this? cant remember because he says this)
All his slapping around was a display of inxperience since he had no idea how to defend white base, people think his slapping Amuro 'corrected' him but it wasn't the only reason why Amuro went back into the Gundam was because of his rivalry with Char.

He does improve as a leader but its more like he becomes such a staple of the universal centurary as a whole, hes also one of the most human feeling characters in the franchise

Ryu's deathflag where everywhere this episode so it was obvious he was going to die.

Didn't die in vain though since he saved the White Base.

But can't say I felt anything over his death tbch, and the mourning scene was a bit over the top with the whole crew crying.

Ryu and Hamon both gone in one blaze of flame?!?!

I was sick of Ryu after all his bullying of people last episode but he went out with great strength and I realize now his bullying was because the discord onboard the White Base had gotten so bad and it hurt him to see his friends fighting.

I loved seeing Hamon talk to each soldier before the battle and to hear her eulogy to Ral in her head. She was a mature and cool character just like Ral, I'll miss them both.

The events that happened now, in addition to having a certain epic quality, will be crucial in the future, I have the feeling, both on the growth of the characters but not all. The demise of a character, albeit secondary, but not marginal, poses many questions and unknowns, the situation becomes addictive, Yay!
Not bad combat, Amuro always stands out, which is in battle and beyond.

RIP Hamon, she was a good character.

Bright has lost control of the crew, though I always have to remember that he's only 19. Ryu's death was tragic, and I'm glad that Bright at least mentioned that other people of White Base died the previous episode. I wonder how long they can keep this up because all their equipment is falling apart.

As a lot of people have already pointed out, they sure as fuck a lot more affected by Ryu death than all the other guys in the last episode. And yeah that was a bit of an oversight on the writer to me. Would have worked better if they kept their stoic demeanour but with depressed looks on their faces. To show more how drained they are as well sick and downright indifferent towards death they becoming.

But have Bright break down, more to do with the weight of his inexperience coming down on him. As this whole series up to now for them has been a complete disaster as they’re not trained for this.

The only other problem I have is the bomb; it seems like they were going use that blow up the whole white base. So all they had to do is get it close enough and blow it up. Which seemed like it was, so could not have shoot it and more or less destroy white base? Yeah seem like a waste of time shooting the Gundam.

No idea how the last scene was hilarious but... really gonna miss Ryu-san. He needed more screentime to be honest.

I swear, in every episode, White Base has fought relentlessly without ever resting one single episode. Ramba Ral an Hamon were great side characters, but I really hope the crew gets at least one episode to rest.

I had a feeling it may be Ryu's time to go. He died as a messenger. Bringing together the crew once more, attempting to connect Amuro and Bright, and sacrificing himself in one brief moment. This is the third time I got teary eyed, there was a sense of shock when Ryu drove his plane into the other. The loss of Ryu ended up overshadowing the amazing display of combat Amuro showed, but I do want to mention him tossing the Zaku, shooting the engine, it was very cool too.

Something I like is how Bright has been characterized. He can be a real hard-ass, it was my first thought when we really got to know him. He has a strong sense of justice, he has guts, and he has good intentions but the way he can command others to get what he wants can make Kikka cry, or distance Amuro from the crew. He's not perfect by any means, as Ryu said, he views Amuro as a tiger. He's locking him up, he's not trying to understand him or talk to him. Although being a hard-ass may be really damn important as a military commander, it may not be the way to treat a child soldier. Everyone has some growing to do.

Bright crying and asking Ryu to forgive him for letting this happen was a good breaking point which showed the burden he carries once more. It seems that this moment represents a serious loss the crew needed to come together, and to prevent something like this happening again.

There is a painful message to see in-between the lines however. Just earlier, Hamon named numerous of her soldiers as they all resolved themselves for death. The soldiers on the other side are named for a reason, they are all somebody's Ryu. That funeral scene we saw, is something that the White Base has caused many people to go through. And I think it is quite notable that the cycle of war or hatred continues to be a recurrent notion. To get revenge for Garma, Ramba Ral was sent, to get revenge for Ramba Ral, Hamon went on a suicide mission. It is bleak.

As I expected from the last episode, Ryu died. A bit exaggerated reaction at the end but for a side character, it was not so bad. Hamon feels with more personality and her death was harder to watch.

What started as a sort of retread of Icelina's attempted vengeance of Char revealed a sort of suicidal attack by Ramba Ral's troops and, sadly, Ryu's death. It seems that the others have a lot of growing up to do. I am also curious if Ryu perhaps predicted his fate.

Lesson: Make sure the enemy is completely DEAD. The enemy is not fighting to take prisoners. They are fighting to Disintegrate you. If you don't destroy them they will keep coming back and they will keep killing until they are all dead or they've killed every one on White Base. They are not your friends. I hope every one who needed a timely reminder on White Base has finally got it now.

Amuro had the Woman in charge of this Kamikaze Kill Squad but chose to not hit the bridge when the bridge of the Gallop was the easiest thing to hit. And because of this... we have this episode.

I noticed how the oldest comments in this board are always the most heartless. Kinda funny. Also surprised to see that so many people think Bright is totally heartless. Dude is clearly trying to act tough because he's the leader and it's his job.

Also R.I.P. to Hamon. Nice try in avenging your loved one. It almost worked out, the plan wasn't bad. Characters are dying like crazy lately.

If White Base is one of the Federation's most advanced ships and also has the Gundam why is it manned by kids, an incompetent ensign, gets zero supplies and such little orders?
It's always so cool to see the Gundam modules connect in air.
Absolutely heartbreaking about Ryu.
