Japanese Government Invests $2.2 Million In Young Animator Training

According to Anime!Anime!, The Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan invested 214 million yen ($2.26 million) in "Young Animator Training Project" and entrusted the execution of the project to Japan Animation Creators Association (JaniCA). JaniCA will produce four original anime (23 min long with OP and ED sequences) in cooperation with four production studios by the end of next January. Young animators will receive on-the-job-trainings under the supervision of professional anime creators. The anime works are planned to be shown on TV or at anime events.

Young animators are generally trained while they work on in-between animations, but such opportunities are diminishing since anime producers have been outsourcing the process to China, South Korea, and South East Asian countries.

The previous Aso government had launched National Comprehensive Center of Media Arts project, commonly known as "The Anime Hall of Fame" last year and prepared a budget of 11.7 billion yen ($123 million). However, the current Hatoyama administration criticized that it's a waste of money and dropped it. JaniCa was one of the proposers of the project and has been lobbying for improvement of the environment of young animators.

Singapore Media Development Bureau has launched International Animation Fundation and will donate maximum $3.65 million per one anime work through the fund.

Well, at least there will be some more animators in the near future. It would be better if they raised the wages of the animators now though.

It's about time Japan drew their own animated boobies instead of outsourcing them.

Since the boondocks S3 has started I can tell the koreans must be getting more, the animation quality is so much better then most stuff made by jpn animation studios nowadays (there is a few amazing jpn studios left but time will tell how long they last.)
Something cool to be placed here in the near future.

Well, animators do get paid less, so the young ones are getting the best shot.

That's what I was thinking. Once you get over ther 'woah, a number with the word million in it' you realise it isn't actually a huge amount.

Still, more money invested in anime is never a bad thing

How? By putting animators on government salary? Or by giving subsidies to animation studios?
One makes fans watch the work of bureaucrats, the other sounds like European unemployed programs. Not sure I'd be all too happy about either.

What plenty of people here seem to miss is that the government doesn't pay animators, nor does it set the wages for them. That's the responsibility of unions and employers.
And even if said money would get to subsidies for animation studios, who says they'd go to animators wages? I'd rather the government kept out of such decisions and spend money were it is supposed to, like education of its citizens. Which is exactly what this report states.
So, in my eyes commendable.

The life of a true hard-working artist isn't "luxurious". That goes for manga/anime artists as well. Still, they deserve better pay.

Erh, I would like to ask about
" I'd rather the government kept out of such decisions and spend money were it is supposed to, like education of its citizens. Which is exactly what this report states.

Subsidies for certain sectors of the economy is really important, especially 1 that is a unique trait of their society. The government SHOULD intervene when there's a need.
And please spare a thought for animators as well, I do believe they do work quite hard for quite little cash.

And most importantly, spending cash where it's supposed to... have you heard about the "bridges to nowhere"? Go do a google search. I'm not implying anything.

It's maximum of 3++ million.

...although I wonder why they don't spend it inside Singapore itself. OUR ANIMATION SUCKS.

Well, they're going to help getting more employees this way, so it helps. If there's only a few people in the business, but they're all being paid well, we aren't really improving, as less people are entering the industry. We can't just say "Fuck you" to the employees, but we can't blow all the money on them either. The next benefit should go to the already hired employees though.

Most probably not, sankaku is retarded as well.
You can't live in Japan with a job at 3$/h and I also beleive that there is a minimum salary there,

If there is a "$3/hr" quote going around, I'm sure it would be due to a fact like this:

Each animator was paid a general stipend for their work. The animators, working hard and doing their best, spent many hours on their work. When it came down to it, then, the stipend divided by the hours was $3/hr.

This is probably how it went down if that is true, at all.

i recently read in a manga which was published in back 2008 that ¥800/hr (nearly $10) is the minimum payment for any worker and i think author stated a fact. so why would animators will work for $3/hr in 2011 when other easy jobs can get them more money.

Ever heard of something called "the future"?
"Tonight, I sit in the eye of the storm. As fire boils around me, I press forward, winds and lightning lashing my wings. I am no match for what I face. Yet I will not back down, and though fear may place it's stranglehold on my heart, courage will see me through. With tears in my eyes, I hit full throttle. My engines become an inferno, and my weapons light up, awaiting my command.

If I die tonight, I will do so fighting for everything I believe in."

Apparently not. But hey, let's concentrate on the now and get fucked over when the current workers die and/or retire right?

Seriously though, I hate people who fail to see the bigger picture. Whatever they can do stimulate the stagnant japanese anime industry is a good thing. There's been too much outsourcing lately.
