Well damn, didn't think Rin's backstory would be so dark. Really makes you feel bad for her, and want to throw Akito off that ledge instead.

Well Tohru will most likely help Rin deal with what she's feeling in the next episode. Hoping that she gets a happy ending, cause she kinda deserves one.

Wow, what a great episode!
We finally get to see Rin's backstory, and damn it was heartbreaking. Garbage "parents". Thank goodness Haru was there for her, they make a really beautiful couple.

But jesus christ, Akito enrages me to no end! At this point I just hope she gets brutally murdered -.-

When you think you can't hate Akito more, Akito throws an innocent and full of trauma teenager through the window after abusing her verbally and physically. This evil character won't die probably but I wish they would. Freaking monster ugh

I know that teenagers have sex, etc but it's still weird bc Haru is like 15...

EDIT: Does anyone know the title/singer of the song that played in the end while Rin was falling down?

It can be worse, Akito can probably bully Haru to bed with ease, and we just don't see this directly, because it would be tantamaunt to showing rape onscreen

I don't know what hurts more.... Rin is so strong and selfless. Sick as a horse as they may say, but loyal and innocent nonetheless. I feel like she's initially shown as so rude and unfeeling, but she's probably the most emotion stricken character so far. Sensei is so kind to all the zodiacs it kind of hurts... more then the pain itself. That and when you think about the fact that Haru really tries to be strong for everyone else....he as the story goes carries the rat. He doesn't fight for first, but he fights for what he loves... and loves Rin. And Rin fights for Haru...fuck my heart hurts. They're such a perfect pair, although totally reversed in my opinion. (Her design seems so blunt and she seems to says what's on her mind. Haru, easily angered is always so somber and chill... who would have thought?) Haru has a strong woman harem?. I don't think I really appreciated either of their characters as much as I did now. Beautifully portrayed, and beautifully directed.

Why do I have this sinking feeling about Rin's condition???

Also, why is NO ONE in the Soma family (and who isn't zodiac) pressing charges against Akito???

Wow...just wow. This episode was Magnificent. Rin's VA did a spectacular job portraying her feelings throughout the episode. I am so glad TOhru was the one who found her. It's only going to make want to break the curse of the Soma's and complete her goal faster.

God Damn RIN!!! She went from being a girl with something up her sleeve to being one of the best characters in this show. God Damn!

Also she has a pretty dynamite body.

Damn. The coldest person always had the warmest of hearts. To free her lover from the curse she'd go to any depths of hell.
I was always interested in Rin and Haru's story, also liked how they presented themselves. But never knew such was the harsh reality. I hope Tohru's warmness could melt some of her sorrows next episode.

Btw was Rin older than Haru?

Akito never cease to amaze, uh?
Also for the record: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Rin's long black and lustrous hair.

Well, this sure was a quite heavy episode. I said in previous weeks that I would wait for her backstory to finally give my opinion on Rin and good thing I did.
Aside from Haru, most of her life is compound of pain and abuse so it's understandable to see her displaying such cold and sometimes cruel front towards others. But man, she's so broken... she doesn't care about what may happen to her as long as Haru is safe and happy. That's some strong sense of devotion and compassionate love yet it's so bittersweet to see at the same time.

Anyways, good thing Tohru was the one who found her so let's hope she may be of help. Hopefully, she will be able to give some comfort to her... even if it's just a little.

Haru is 16, Rin is 18 at this point in the story. They are two years apart. He is in his first year of high school, she is in her third/last. At the start of the story they were 15 and 17 respectively.

That was just... terrifying.

My eyes were glued to the screen for the entire length of the episode. We finally get to see Rin's backstory... and it was really far, far worse than I expected... I can't believe her parents tried to put on an act of loving their daughter and being a happy family for that long. And then just snapping. I think that just makes the pain even worse than if you had rejected her from the beginning. All of it was a lie, and now you've given her memories of an idealised past that can never be regained with you.

That panic and terror she felt at the hospital for fear of her parents rejecting her was really hard to watch (the entire episode was to be honest). She blamed her very existence for all the pain she suffered. Glad Haru was there to bring her to the hospital and to also stand up for her when her parents just flat out rejected her. The sight of Rin crawling and begging for her parents not to leave her is going to haunt me. But bless Haru for what he said in defence of Rin, and also Shisho for always looking out for not just Kyou but also the other zodiacs.

Didn't expect to see a sweet and cute side to Rin. She really enjoys the time she has with Haru, where she can relax and not be burdened by worries, terror, and trauma. After being unwanted by her parents, she finally found Haru who wanted her, and not out of pity, but just because.

So that's what happened to Rin, and why she has that scar on her back. Did Akito just flat out committed attempted murder? Who in their right fucking mind throws someone out of a window? I swear Akito will rue that day, because on that day the Rin who wants to break the curse was born.

Really this entire episode gave me goosebumps, was hard to see, and also kept me terrified of what I was going to see next. Rin must be one of the strongest zodiacs to have endured so much suffering and pain that if it had happened to any other person, would've destroyed them completely. But somehow she survived, not just because of Haru, but I guess because all that suffering has made her even stronger.

When she started screaming after seeing Tohru... I immediately realised how fucked up what she went through must've been. Always a great sight to see Tohru hug and give some love to someone.

I hope Rin and Tohru can work together to break this curse.

Next week can't come quick enough... I need more of Fruits Basket 2nd season! This is a true masterpiece. I really need to see the next episode quickly!

10/10.

I'm so glad we got a Rin-centered episode. I love Hana-chan and think she's gorgeous but damn Rin is another level of beautiful. She's probably the most beautiful female character in this series. I did not expect to cry this episode. I starting tearing up and tears rolled down my face when I saw Rin react to Tohru with PTSD. Also, seeing Tohru embracing Rin really broke me.

Haru x Rin is my top OTP now, even more so than Kyo x Tohru.

Also, this episode fueled my never-ending hatred for FUCKING AKITO! I've read spoilers about Akito but I still FUCKING hate Akito. I can't even type correctly, my fingers are locking up from all the rage.

When you are used to hearing her more in child's voices (Like Yui from K-on for example) I was kind of caught off guard at how mature and adult she was able to make Rin's voice. Even when she kept saying "Don't Yell at me" (A POWERFUL and emotional scene btw) She still kept the adult tone in her voice.

Awesome job

Wow. Wow. Fruits Basket has given us a lot of these dark backstories by now - to the point where, unfortunately, the parents saying they don't love the child has been overused and holds no weight anymore - but Rin's is perhaps one of the darkest and most emotional. One innocent, childish question - born perhaps from a bit of intuition on Rin's part - essentially tore her life apart, sending her parents into a continuous spiral of verbal and physical abuse (or so it's implied in her first hospital visit we see in the flashback). And then, once again, there's Akito to crush any light and hope that Rin had of an "escape" with Haru and take another step into pure evil territory with outright attempted murder; even after all the abuse we've seen from Akito, I was never expecting them to go as far as that. In a way, I'm surprised Hiro wasn't "punished" for seeing that happen, given Akito's usual approach (though it's also a surprise that the door was left open, as it's usually always closed whenever Akito is having a one-on-one "chat" with any of the Somas.

Gotta love Tohru once again though. No words, no questions asked. Straight to hugging and silently comforting Rin after seeing her absolute terror and trauma.

Since last week I was prepared for this episode (i read the manga, so I know what will happen next on this anime). What can I say is Rin's past is better animated. The adaption of the mnaga is really goo, with little changes.

Some parents can be cruel, really cruel. Momiyi's mother also neglected his son, but Rin's parents is in another level, in my opinion.

Rin is lucky to be alive after that fall! And that after being psychologically abused only seconds before that! Really Akito is ruthless and it's understandable that so many here hate her guts. Also, Rins parents are almost as horrible as Kyo's and shouldn't have ever gotten a child in the first place.

A whole lot of unconvincing melodrama.

From the way it was depicted Rin's mother and father had anger issue, but they were normal until one day she questioned them? Seriously? People who have problem with anger have them from childhood, what often happens is that parents who do not know how to deal with a child's emotions and their own are unable to teach the child how to deal with them. No one develops anger issues out of the blue.

I don't think it was anger issues but more like they were faking it, the happy family thing was a facade, and finally reached a breaking point. They never loved her.

Wealthy, influential families absolutely can and do get away with stuff like that. Criminal charges suddenly have insufficient evidence to continue prosecution (because the right person was threatened or bribed, or maybe both), the victim (or their family) gets a substantial check in exchange for an agreement to shut up about it, and the whole thing gets swept under the rug.

Akito needs to be the one taking a trip off the balcony. To do that to a girl who's already suffering the way Rin was takes a level of cruelty I can't fathom.

So this was a darker episode. I loved the back story of what she went through in that we understand more of why she is who she is. Apparently she and Hatsuharu ended up 3rd base or beyond.

I'm so glad he stood up.

I really wish we knew more about this curse though. It really bugs me more hasn't been revealed yet. In the end Akito seems to be the one that will need the most saving, but I could be very wrong. Who knows. Can't wait until next week!!!

There’s also the fact that I’m pretty sure the only ones who fully know this incident is Rin, Hiro, and Akito. And it’s likely Hiro and Rin would keep their mouths shut out of fear considering Akito’s their god and also that Akito did just attempted to murder one of them.

I found Akito slightly rude for the duration of their appearance in this episode.

Overall though, everyone had a beautiful part to play in this smoldering fiasco - my only wish was that more could have been shown to the audience of Tohru's reaction to and way of processing what of this she is able to discern or becomes privy to, but perhaps next episode.

And here we are with chapters 78-79, the Rin's backstory "mini arc" (which will last half of the next episode because it's 1 more chapter in the manga).

Rin is my favourite female character in Furuba (male are Kyou and Haru). Probably you guys can start seeing why, but we'll see more of Rin's awesome character. Tsundere, Jerk with a heart of gold, Defrosting Ice Queen/King, these tropes fit both Kyou and Rin. I love characters with these tropes. <3 And Haru is just Haru, who can not love Haru (White Haru of course, not Black Haru XD).

Anyway, with this episode we understand why Rin acts like she does.

Cold, stubborn, and fiercely independent, Rin is very closed-off as a result of her abusive and traumatic past. The abuse of her parents left her with PTSD and Guilt Complex, she thinks it's her fault her parents hate her and also that her feelings for Haru are "schackles", that her "twisted love" would some day end up smothering Haru (but she can't help it, she still loves him so much). That's why she says to him she doesn't love him anymore, to "release" him from herself. And she wants to release him from Akito as well. She hates the "schackles" Akito has put on Haru, which makes her determined to find a way to break the "curse". She has a disastrous run-in with Akito, which puts her in a hospital, like Kisa (but with much worse injuries).

For people asking, yes, Rin is 2 years older than Haru. He's 15-16 and she is 17-18 (not sure which at this point in the story). I don't know why, but it's always schocking for me to see teenagers having sex in anime/manga. Didn't think they would make it this obvious in the anime, since they made the Haru-Rin kiss in episode 14 a bit less passionate than in the manga.

Anyway, for Rin it's hard to make friends because of her personality, but she really needs gentle people like Haru and Tooru. Hurry and help her, Tooru. The poor girl really needs your warmth and love. <3 The Haru-Rin couple and the Kyou-Tooru couple - really can't decide which I like more, they are both beautiful couples, the people in them complete and complement each other so much. They are amongst my all time favourite anime/manga/game couples.

Akito should burn in hell (yeah, I know all their backstory and reasons and I still hate them for all they did to all the Zodiacs).

Rin's parents are amongst the worst Zodiac parents, together with Kyou's father, Yuki's mother and Momiji's mother.

Rin was hospitalized because of the fall and has a huge scar on her back because of it. We were shown her in the hosptial at the end of Season 1, and her scar is visible in numerous episodes as well as the ending.

As for Akito, only Rin, Hiro, and Akito were present when it happened, and the Sohma family is immensely wealthy and influential. They own many parts of the town. In fact, the hospital Rin was staying at was a Sohma run hospital. So Akito was able to get away with it. It makes sense.

Yes she has a scar on her back which she got from getting hit by that rock which proly sunk in her flesh and she bled. But bruh she should be in more serious condition. I assume it wasn't that long ago she fell and she seems perfectly fine physically atm.

So that's why she was in the hospital I guess. Pretty messed up backstory, but isn't it a little extreme - the parents I mean. Am I supposed to believe the parents were like that because she possessed a spirit? I can't comprehend what it's what to have a child like that, but still. Zodiac and shitty parents is a pretty common theme in this series after all.

Initially I also thought the reason she wanted to break to curse so bad was because her parents would accept her after that, but now I'm thinking no. It has to be for Hatsuharus sake (and I guess herself/the others). So then maybe her parents just happened to be horrible ppl (probably also on top of the zodiac thing pushing it further). Well you gotta have the messed up childhood several of your characters for a series like this so it's fine.
