Just don't listen to those boring people who claim all harems are the same. That's a lie. Not all harems are equally funny. Not all harems are equally sexy. Not all harems are equally heartwarming. Not all harems are equally sad. Have some advice from me: A number of harems are pure comedy. No guarantee they will make you laugh, but they want to. "Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?"; "To Love Ru"; "Asobi ni Iku yo!", "Shomin Sample". Save the last one for later - it exploits the viewer's knowledge of harem comedy tropes. Others have a strong romance component. A lot of other harems manage to unromantic (which is why girls keep failing, in my opinion). "Nisekoi" and "Ai Yori Aoshi" (especially the first few episodes before it becomes a harem) are two memorable romantic harems. Some harems don't have so much romance, as they have the MC (and possibly other girls) dealing with the girls' problems. I love this subgenre for the heartwarming that it brings. "Grisaia no Kajitsu", "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" and "Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?" are memorable examples. Some go all the way with "fulfilling male fantasy" angle, and make the MC awesome. (or "Marty Stu" for haters). "Strike the Blood", "Champione", "Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou", "Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance" and many "school battle harems" go this route. You'll see the MC shaking the world with his awesome powers, while world's best female fighters back him up. No idea if this will appeal to you, but I think these main characters are usually the coolest. Note that many harems in the previous category might go very light on romance and comedy aspects (especially if they don't overplay MC's power), becoming more like regular action shows where the main cast happens to be a harem. "Dog Days" is my favorite of these. "Maji de Watashi ni Koi wo Shinasai!" is another notable example. Some harems go for heavy sexiness, but that's probably not what you're looking for. Still, "Okusama ga Seitokaichou", "Shinmai Maou no Testament", and "Masou Gakuen HxH" are like that. Note that any category above (except "heavy sexiness") can be both high and low on fanservice, and both high and low on execution. |

| I tend to evade harem animes but I still watch them, so idk just click play and reject common sense.. but when it comes to manga the 1st thing I search for is the harem tag tho xd It all depends on fetishes aswell.. All in all u don't choose harem, harem chooses u. |
| To get into harem you find boy with girlfriend and ask him if he want two girlfriend. Like everything 90% of harems are shit. You don't have to get into them at all, but you could also try anime such as Toradora, Sakurasou, and Chuunibyou that have the cute girls harem anime have but don't have the annoying self insert MC or the shitty personalities harem girls tend to have. |

| I'm not the biggest fan of harems so I can't gurantee this would work 1. Forget about the romance aspect. There ethier won't be any or it is going to end with the obvious first/tsundere girl. 2. Watch for the comedy (or what ever else it offers, but it is most likely comedy). If it isn't your cup of tea then the show is most likely not for you. 3. You pick one girl(or boy) and declare them the best. If it isn't the first/tsundere girl then you gainned the right to complain that the show didn't pick the right option. |
| I really dislike harems. I tend to like reverse harems (I love Yona of the Dawn and OHSHC) but that could also just be because they're actually good lol So, the answer is: don't get into harem |

I feel like self-insert protags are everywhere and people just notice them more in harems. |

| I think if you want to get into harem, you should start with shows that include harem-like elements but aren't strictly harem anime. So, for example, the Monogatari Series, Grisaia series, or maybe Zero no Tsukaima (Zero would be the closest to an actual harem). The only straight-up harem I could immediately recommend is Monster Musume, which I didn't super enjoy, but apparently a lot of girls find it hilarious for whatever reason, so... maybe you will, too lol. |

| First, as a harem, the shows would like it that you could immerse yourself into the main character, thats why the MC is always depicted as kind, heroic, etc, because thats what most teenage guys want to be seen as. Another kind would be how the MC is a perv (this is your issue here) , this is shown to let guys immerse themselves into the show, as if they are looking/ touching the bare bodies of the females themselves. Second, you need to be attracted to the girls, harems most of the time consists of a wide variety of characters, they look different, sound different, have different personalities , etc. This allows guys to take their pick on which girl they like best, and thus immersing themselves into being close to said girl. That said, one can just like all of them and enjoy the harem even more. The problem is, since you're attracted to guys instead, the second point is already cut off, unless you can find a girl you can truly admire among the bunch. Guys in the harems are also the generic nice guys anyway, the flow is usually how the guy with such huge amounts of kindness touches the girl, but as we know in real life, this does not always happen. To check, why not check out some reverse harem anime instead? If you like the guys in those shows, then you can understand why its guys that usually like harems. I personally don't like reverse harems unless I like the Female MC anyway. |

Harem anime is, first and foremost, a teenage boys fantasy. They do tend to dream about a lot of girls being interested in them without any real effort from their part. It also have a subtle (or in some cases, not so subtle) erotic subtext, but it never goes everywhere because it is not porn and surprisingly, can never turn into one. As for sniffing the panties. Anime is, in nature, very fetishistic and tends to exaggerate everything to the extreme. It's basically anime. They do weird things because genre (or its intended audience) is quite immature, so they can't get actual erotic content right (in sane person way). You must be already used to above. Aside of that, most harem anime shows are basically romantic comedies without actual resolution, can be enjoyed for actual entertainment, but jokes get old quite quickly. They don't tend to be very innovative in that part. Also, most harem that aren't merely a boys wet dream are actual decent fantasy action shows. And i mean fantasy as an actual genre, no erotic dream of teenage boy. Tl'dr: Hence, if you aren't boy, most harem anime is still watchable for sake of comedy and action. They kinda also tend to have quite decent artwork. |

| @flannan I feel you're missing the point. @minaroyu Harems are not usually about the harem. Most of these replies are kinda dumb. Self inserts are just a tool, not the focus. If someone thinks it's just for mental masturbation, then they're the shallow pervs, not the writers. Harems come about often in anime because of how the VN's are usually set up. In a galge VN, there is a protagonist (usually male, regardless of male or female reader), and there are a number of girls. They're all set up to have their own particular quirks to distinct them from one another and so on. Throughout the story, you can go down routes, to learn about that individual, date them, have sex with them and so on. Some VN's have a way in which you can, through careful choices, make everything cohesive between the girls and succeed in a harem ending. Often times in these games the girls will already have an affinity towards the MC, hence why it gets defined a harem. Now the reason why harems do so well and are appreciated, is for similar reasons to why the highschool setting is so widespread. What the harem does is set up an interesting scenario in which a multitude of emotions can be involved, causing a lot of drama and so on. It makes for interesting character interactions without having to be too creative. This is also why harems usually finish in the anime as open-ended, because all kinds of different viewers have their own favourite girl and who they want to be with the MC (or not because they want the girl for themselves lol) It makes for a plot-vessel, an ecchi vessel, and a conversation vessel (either conversation with yourself in the mind, or with others who're watching). Though at times, yes, it's just a setup for comedy mayhem. Again, there are plenty of girls who watch male-protag harems, because they agree that the girls are cute and/or relatable. PS: harem means pretty much love polygon with more than 2 interested individuals |
