I liked this episode. The song was nice and the episode was interesting.

I hope i can watch this and like it. I didn't like Macross F and i actually deleted all the episodes after the last episode. (i only do that when i don't plan to ever watch that anime again)

The only bad thing about it is that i thought it would be airing now in January. It's pretty bad to know that i'll have to wait until April before i can watch the other episode =/

but making your idols into magical girls is jumping the shark in my opinion.

Your opinion is quite wrong considering Basara flew out into space with a robot that had its own guitar to try and literally sing the enemy into submission. The shark was jumped a long time ago.

As a bonus for me, I am absolutely LOVING how salty most of these comments are. I don't know why, but reading/hearing about how magical girls have invaded and degraded the Macross name is amusing to me. From the very first installment, Macross has been a show about Japanese idols saving the universe trhough music. The only thing that actually changed is the type of idol, to reflect the current idol trend in Japan. Why is that so hard to understand?

First of all, opinions are not wrong. You might disagree with me but that doesn't make it wrong.

Secondly, idols are not magical girls. Big difference. Huge. And for the record I don't dislike magical girls. I quite enjoyed Madoka and can watch Sailor Moon without problems. But Macross did not up to until this point do magical girls

Thirdly, rewatch Macross (the original) and look at the treatment/story of the idol. It's pretty well done and actually quite serious in tone: it shows not only the glitzy side of the idol business, but how Minmei is manipulated, worked almost to death and is generally an extremely unhappy and towards the end, almost a broken human being. No happy, genki girl loving her life there. Yes, song is used as a weapon, but the reasoning behind is quite sound. The aliens have never been exposed to it and suffer from culture shock as a result. After a while it actually stops working. No magic there.

Fourth. Yeah, Basara and M7 were pretty silly in their own right, but Basara was trying to emulate Minmei and was a crazy pacifist. M7 tried to explain all the supernatural aspects of the story with 'sound energy' and it's up to the person who watches it if they buy it or not. Let's see how Delta does it in the future. But M7 was a pretty strange fish all around. Plus, II and Zero were all much more serious.

Macross has always been about idol and Robot so not surprise to me. Maybe this one have more idol influence but it is still Macross theme. Somewhat similar to that AKB anime.

Hmm.......one should NEVER, EVER go full George Lucas with ones franchise. Like ever.

I'm going to give it a few episodes more (maybe five episodes to be more precise) before I just say: " Screw it, not gonna bother." Until then I'll just be patient with it. 😐

Macross was always about idols and robots...

No kidding. That settles it then. Gurren Lagann has giant robots in it. Gundam 00 has giant robots in it. It's like, they're the same fucking show. It's not like there's an obvious difference in tone, atmosphere, execution, characters, believability, realism, and just about any other imaginable thing I can think of about the narrative. Coming off of the original 1982 series, one would not even be able to tell that this is a fucking sequel if it weren't for "Macross" in the title.

After seeing this putrid CGI-filled incoherent mess of a preview, there is no doubt in my mind that it is unsalvageable. Fuck this series. It's going to be awful.

I should note though, I wouldn't feel such a visceral hatred toward this anime if they at least got smart and branched the timeline off into its own metaverse like Gundam does with its spinoff shows. That way they can take all the shitty detours they want through moeblob town while still being able to return to the real story when they're ready to put their big boy pants back on. But the fact that they expect us to believe this magical girl diarrhea exists in the same universe as Hikaru, Misa, and Minmei is insulting to my intelligence. And furthermore, it ensures that nothing short of a complete retcon of large chunks of the story are now necessary in order for any future iteration of Macross to be taken seriously.

The only debate I'm having right now is whether I should continue watching just to see how much it stretches into so-bad-it's-good territory.

The 1982 represents different cultural atmosphere, which would not make sense to use now as Macross was always reflection of Japan's culture of popular music.

I found the first episode preview too cheesy for my tastes. It was so damn colorful, happy-go-lucky, and full of bad pop songs (and magical girls, really?). Certainly, Macross always had a bit of cheese in itself. It is a series about winning wars using the power of love and music after all, but I liked it way more when things were a bit more subtle.

On the flip side, it is still Macross making a return. There will be awesome dogfights, and there is Mirage too. So I will keep watching to see how it goes

Watched the special a couple of times now, and as a long time Macross fan who has seen all the series, I loved it, with my only real issue being the sync - posing of the VF-31's at points. Other than that, no real issues... and those complaining of the "magical girl" tropes... the tech advances across all the series sort of leads to this, it's nothing new.

As a start you can not say that is new, who knows Macross, knows that it is an anime series a bit special, a genre mecha than usual, as the start is somewhat confusing, mixes music and fighting scenes quite interesting, the chara design is cute, the colors too, maybe the 3DCG is not the best.It will further begin when the anime series.

Go watch Macross 7.

Many Macross series have their own genres. SDF is classical space opera, Plus is cyberpunk Top-Gun, 7 is space woodstock, dynamite 7 is ecological series, Zero is fantasy Top-Gun.

Technically, idols of Macross Delta aren't magical girls. They use holograms (58 years development in the universe!), hypnosis (Sharon Apple - Macross Plus) and technology simillar to EX-Gear suit (Macross Frontier).

Strongly disagree with this. The Valkyries were rendered completely obsolete by giving the idols the ability to defend themselves from everything the enemy could throw at them (except maybe a Macross Cannon); the only function they serve now are to deliver the girls, deliver their shields, and recharge said shields.

Macross always has Valkyries, romance, and singing. If you cripple any of the three you have a bad Macross story, and Delta looks to be beating Valkyries over the head with "magical" girls (more like sentai girls, really).

1) Somehow I don't think the primary role of the Valkyries should be a delivery service.
2) Did you perhaps miss the singers not needing to be defended by the Valkyries? The idols kept on dodging and blocking the Battle Pods' attacks after the Valkyries flew off, which means the Valkyries' earlier actions were completely redundant and only there for show.
3) Cut the dogfight out of that episode and tell me what changed. Oh, right, nothing, because it was completely extraneous. Idols blocked or shrugged off all of those attacks as well because even the enemy Valkyries are obsolete.

Try not to get distracted by the shiny explosions next time.

Your excessive mentions of Hikaru, Misa, and Minmei while ignoring Nekki Basara, Mylene Jenius, and Alto/Sheryl/Ranka tells me you basically watched the first series and skipped straight to this one.

As someone who REALLY loves the Macross TV series: take the absurdity of Nekki Basara from Macross 7 and combine it with the transformable costumes and lightshows of Sheryl Norme in Macross Frontier, and...there we go. Macross Delta. This isn't "jump the shark", this is the "next step". I'm not saying you have to like it, but you can only disagree if your other exposures to this series are Plus and Zero. Kawamori saves the "srs" moments for the OVAs, I guess.

Macross 7 was the worst series before this one. I don't know why people keep mentioning it like it excuses Delta. That Kawamori has set a precedent for shit doesn't make producing shit acceptable. Frontier was a mistake but at least it had some semblance of subtlety to its storytelling. Maybe if 7 was the last series in the canon then this one would be the next logical step, but Frontier had at least somewhat distanced itself from the clown show of Macross 7.

Dear god, please, just please shut up. They are not "magic girls", the show went out of their way to highlight that they were using technology. If you didn't get that, then show some shame for being so friggin stupid.

Did no one get that this show has inverted the genders? The leader of the "idol" group is the typical Macross squadron captain. "Now, you have done it", that was the same line that every male squadron commander (including Frontier's Ozuma) used. The idol troupe may be using drones, but they are the front line soldiers of this series.

That is the virtue of this episode, it is what makes this intriguing for spring. The girls are going to be the warriors, the guys (and one elven eared girl) will be the support. That is the hook. As is usual for Macross, they are changing things to suit the times.

just done watching Ep0.. and pretty much like Macross F's 0, shows the theme of the what they intended to do... speaking from a writers point of view... this 4th TV series seems to be marriage of 7 and F.... the creator finally think Macross audience has swallow the song energy plot device after two whole series setting that up...
So they are willing to go all out using it beyond the level of 7 as a primary weapon and give us some ace vs ace battle from the side stories then mix up with the rather successful music infusion of F all together.
Again, this is the bigger / more equal better formula at work. More singers, more rival ace pilots etc. So since delta is 4, i wonder how the new pair fits in as 5th ... so some girl in the ban and some poor ace is gonna die... some where in the middle of the plot... if they are to keep the group as 4 people only...
Just like the F episode zero, singing is there, large scale space battle is there to a degree, mysterious enemy figure heads are there too for chance...
I like the idea of song energy terrorism though... perhaps that explains why so many nut jobs in realife willing to do shocking things too... yeah so simply put it.. song energy is the Force of Macross universe.. and we got the song energy version of Jedi Mind tricks .... :)
Hope this show give us something that makes more sense than another old creator director of another well known mech series has tried and failed last year...
Yet.. in the end As plot device, the song energy dimension fold crap is still pretty hard to take in for any one new to the series.

Sorry dude, the stupid one here is you for making such an aggressive post. MiniSiets just explained his points and I kind of agree with some of them. It is blatantly obvious for everyone that the girls are using technology but they're still technically a mahou shoujo. Every element of a mahou shoujo is present, it does not matter if they're using fictional technology or magic; the premise does not change.

What it’s a virtue for you, may be a flaw for others. The idols joining the fight is an interesting idea indeed, but its execution was too flashy and I had a hard time to take it seriously. The idols, each with a distinct color, had a transformation scene, then they immediately started to sing happily while easily dodging missiles and using their arsenal of ridiculous weapons at the same time like they’re playing a video-game. Then, hologramatic dryads started to dance and shine in the background with a big pink colored heart spinning and everyone on the ground became mesmerized like they're watching a show the whole time.

There were an overload of colors, brightness, objects and new technology on this part and they didn't blend well; everything felt too artificial in my opinion, like some sort of a musical clip, the new changes didn't look like they're carefully planned and properly inserted as components of a fictional universe at all, so they made the whole macross universe less believable for me. Maybe it's just me getting older and pickier? Who knows? But some others didn't like the new changes as well, and everyone should be treated with proper respect here in order to create a meaningful discussion.

Where is the helpful magical creature that enables the girls to transform?
If "every" element of a mahou shoujo is present, how could they miss the single most important factor?

Likewise do you not see the irony in writing "they're still technically a mahou shoujo", while admitting that the girls are using tech?

I am arguing "aggressively" because the director went out of his way to show that they were using basic Macross technology, and also that the idols can be wounded or killed by rather conventional weapons, they mostly rely on misdirection and illusions to win their battles (as well as some fold technology learned in the eight years since Frontier). I am curious to see if this is developed more in the series, because it could be a wonderful commentary on the idol boom.

Elazul said:

That doesn't cut the mustard. Had the director not gone out of his way to show that they were using tech, then yes a "oh crap they are turning idols into magical girls" would have some bite. But since the director obviously did the opposite then their "flaws" exist only in their thought (being charitable) processes.

Elazul said:

Okay, you are kidding me. Idols that are too flashy? Really? As for taking it seriously, first let's see how the show develops, but more importantly why did you ever take Macross seriously? It's always been about idols in space. The wonder is how often Macross can create some serious scenes despite its initial premise.

Elazul said:

In that their chief weapon is illusion, no their two chief weapons are illusion and misdirection. And drone technology. Their three chief weapons are illusion, misdirection, drone technology, and their fanatical devotion to the pope.

Wait a second, where did that come from?

But references aside, to quote you, those aren't flaws, they are virtues. The show made it quite clear that those are deliberate, it confuses the enemies and encourages their friends, I want to see where the director takes this.

To summarize, if the director had not gone out of his way to show that the idols are using technology, that they can be harmed, and that everything they do is for propaganda purposes, I would be on the side of the people criticizing this show. But the director DID show all those things, so now I am curious to see how it is developed. The series may prove to be a disappointment, but this preview gave enough to make me want to see whether it turns into a train wreck or proves to be entertaining.

Oh man, I apologize. I don't know why I didn't think of it this way before. This gives me a whole new idea for how they can improve the next episode and take it to the next level. Walkure discovers that farting rainbows can cure the Var Syndrome, but it will be hard to aim due to the curved trajectory during excretion, so there is an element of skill involved. An epic battle ensues as Walkure struggles to expel all number of rainbows from their posteriors in the hopes that the infected will inhale the colorful fumes.

Don't worry guys, the show will explain it with technology, so it's cool.

Does it really matter if they have an animal or not? I've always thought the mahou shoujo genre is defined by transforming girls using their powers to fight enemies. But quite honestly, it matters little to me if the macross idols should be labeled as magical girls or not. We could even come with an agreement here; I can admit I was wrong to label them as such. But the fact is: Some aspects like the idols transforming scene and using their weapons as fast as casting magic does give a magical girl vibe.

It's good to know that Mr. Kawamori is doing his best to explain things. It's a sign that he apparently knows what he is doing instead of letting his mind go loose. But this does not change the fact that the girls' arsenal sounded cheap to many, because they still need to explain how things work in the series. They probably underwent a lot of training to use their weapons so effectively, but things got overboard for me. Commanding drones from afar to form shields and flashy parachutes at will? I confess that I’m having a hard time to believe in it, despite the director's reasoning.

Takuan_Soho said:
That doesn't cut the mustard. Had the director not gone out of his way to show that they were using tech, then yes a "oh crap they are turning idols into magical girls" would have some bite. But since the director obviously did the opposite then their "flaws" exist only in their thought (being charitable) processes.

The director took his time to explain things, but they still have to do the same in the anime. Not everyone likes to watch interviews or sometimes they're simply not aware of them. So, you can't blame people for thinking this way; the idols do give a magical girl vibe, at first sight at least.

IMO, this episode flaw was not the idols resembling magical girls, but its presentation. It was simply not convincing enough for me and it was too flashy and colorful for my tastes. The technology changed too fast in a few years, and it bothers me how easily the idols can manage it. We could say that it is the natural technological evolution. I mean, in Sayonara no Tsubasa, we already got transformation scenes in the last battle. And it was a good movie, where we finally got a proper ending for the Frontier series. But it's also had a pop aura that simply didn't go well with all the drama presented in the story. I felt the same way about the tv series, because the "moe" and flashy parts felt somehow out of place given the amount of suffering some characters are going through. Macross 7, disliked by many, also came with new technologies and they didn't feel believable for me at all so they only made a badly written story even worse. Therefore, my point is Macross Delta episode 1 preview made feel like I am watching Macross 7 all over again: It was too flamboyant and the new technologies felt too absurd and out of place for me. The next episodes can prove me wrong, but for now I prefer to not get my hopes up. I don't like this new direction that Macross is taking, because the best of the series was when they did things more subtly. Macross always had flashy and often silly moments but they're also presented in the right time, and it was what made them so exceptionally meaningful.

Okay, you are kidding me. Idols that are too flashy? Really? As for taking it seriously, first let's see how the show develops, but more importantly why did you ever take Macross seriously? It's always been about idols in space. The wonder is how often Macross can create some serious scenes despite its initial premise.

Why shouldn't I? Macross overall is a pretty well written series, Macross 7 tv series being the only black sheep (the OVA's are pretty good though). It does not matter if it's about idols in space or flying armored camels defending the earth against alien ducklings. As long as they can make it convincing enough for me to take it seriously.

If they would have cut out the "singing stuff" of Macros SDF, the original would be perfect for me. The series was executed exactly in the way, what I had in my mind about space, aliens, drama and so on in my mind as a child back in the days. But on top of that, they (sadly) included the "music theme". While it mostly a cultural and emotional issue in the original and had a great understandable impact on the Zentradi, it got more and more important and just doesnt seem to be realistic anymore. Every following series put more emphasis on this theme, which got space fans cringe more and more.

I started with Plus, SDF, Zero, Frontier, tried 7, skipped it and watched the movies. Maybe you can understand with this order, why I got more and more annoyed by the use of the music theme, wich now tops with magical girls using technique.

As I posted before, Delta is just consitent and the magical girls prestented this way are indeed a logical conclusion, but this doesnt mean it will be liked by the audience, who loved Plus and were just ok with the slight use of music in SDF. I will still watch it, but I really have to adapt my self again to the slight annoyance of the music effect. I loved the OST of Zero, Plus and Frontier btw, so the music itself probably wont be a problem for me, just the metaphysical effect. ^^

i was a teen when the first release of robotech came in my country and i was truly impressed by it, but now that franchise is dead, really

the first macross was a sci fi show with a sufficient amount of realism
the songs in macross were a symbol of peace, culture, mutual understanding

now what we have?

an underaged idol that is sent to the frontline to dance on the head of an enemy mecha while the army shoots at it?
seriously?
zentradi that spawned adult clones to fight were not that evil !

songs that acquire completely new powers every new macross series (and completely loose the old powers of the previous series)
yeah, sure, realistic....

this is only commercial, could be enjoyable if not for the macross in its title

ITT: Fake/New Macross fans who think macross is a serious anime.

First thing to note that when watching a kawamori series, is to expect a crazy ride. And secondly macross has always had some form of idols on them(yes even zero, but zero was shit so lets forget about it).

Nice to have Macross back. Seen only Zero & F, so not too familiar with all the world building, but the elements seem to follow. The singing while fighting is closer to AKB0048 & Symphogear to lesser extent. The idols mostly protect the crowd using the drones. While the real assault are by the jets.
The macross jets still look similar. Ground mechs have funky designs. Zentradi's mech is grasshopper? The war feel is well done & very intense. But overall that chaotic energy spilled to the idol parts & made it messy (everything moves too fast). And when mechs move too fast they feel "fake", & the shading is odd too, feels separate from the anime world. Oh well as expected from Satelight. Hayate's worker mech however looked fabulous under the sun.
"Japanese doughnuts" lol no troll subs.
So mysterious voice catalyzes Var in Zentradi soldiers.
Walkure idols sing to "deculture" people to return to a peaceful mind.
There's space warping ships.
Symbol (Rune?) on pilots/idols' hair related to power of song.
Frejya her personality is really cute. Usually genki girl gets annoying but she's funny and has real motivation, lots of funny faces.
Hayate: unmotivated bland dude, but seems dexterous. Ooh so much dancing mechs, lots of trippy stuff.
Lady M: full of style & hype incoming.
The trio seems like trio from F. Obligatory love triangle when?
Halation song was ok. Orchestra osts fit the mood but was as overbusy as the visuals. 2nd song big band jazz was awesome with that epic lady M entrance.

Interview: only 391/450 shots shown, so not even full episode yet. Was really surprised he said Spring since I assumed Winter. Guess I could catch up on previous stuff.

Oh, man... I really love this post. x)
(Also, while I absolutely share your sentiments and thoughts on delta, I'm still going to give it a go. I love the Macross franchise and if I could suffer through E7 Ao /urk/, then this ought to be a cakewalk!)

And yet somehow we're still here.

I don't get why people are so hung up about the whole magical girls thing, but I do at least understand that they'll never shut up and let it go just because of that transformation sequence.

Which, by the way, was fucking glorious.

If this does not satisfied you then Gundam Thunderbolt is good atm. As long as it is not anything like Valvare or Aldnoah zero it is automatic better already.

Took a brief look at it and I have to agree; Thunderbolt already looks leagues better than this trash. Thanks for the rec.

Frontier is by one of maybe 3 studios that still largely does their mecha animation in 2D and still knows how to run a good mecha show from time to time. It's also the originally Sunrise Studio 1 that was founded back in 1975 and still has veteran animators that know how to draw well. The other would be Bones and I.G but the former's have been as shit as anyone else's of late. I.G's Fafner Exodus and Broken Blade aren't half bad at all though.

So I thought this was a winter anime? No? Okay...
Other than that, I liked it. It was fun and I already like the characters, mainly the two MCs. Anyways Im looking forward to the second ep.

Registered to myanimlist just to comment. I watched most the Macross series recently, so I am sort of new fan, and the memories are actually fresh. All I can say is Delta is pretty garbage.

Maybe it is not fair for someone to watch multitudes of Kawamori life work in a span of weeks and judge/speculate about Kawamori's mental state at the time of each series/feature film, but Delta is the most jarring pos i have ever seen with the name of Macross on it.

Delta is to Macross as Macross 2 OAVs is to Macross. If that makes little sense then lets just say Delta may have superficial element in a Macross, songs, mech, male protagonist pilot, but that is about it.

I could forgive that. The series should strive to evolve to meet the audiences and keep itself relevant, what worked backed then with the OG macross would not work today (who the heck wants to watch multiple episodes of Zentradi disillusionment, snoozefest!). Exhibit A being Frontier. It wasn't my cup of tea, but it did cross into Japanese mainstream culture, the songs were often charting on the Oricon charts, and the characters had mainstream appeal.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand, the problem is Delta isn't even a good anime, it embraces all the sins of modern anime, it is as base of a form of entertainment as I have seen so far this year.

Bad CGI, scripts created to fit a premise(multiple skimpy outfit magic girls) rather good story telling, overbearing pandering to exclusive subculture of the obsessive immature Otaku. I know all anime pander to Otakus to a one degree or other, but Delta doesn't even try to reach out to anybody else on purpose. That makes sense financially, they make most of their money on physical sales of Blue Ray/DVD and merchandise from the Otaku, but it alienates everybody else. Maybe being too harsh just for one episode, however they set up the series frame work up pretty nicely already, the boat has already sailed.

For the ones that don't understand why everyone is salty, just imagine your favorite romance/drama/sol series.
Now imagine that little by little they began to insert some themes like "boy with spike hair fighting another boy with spike hair".
Now out of nowhere it change completly and the drama/sol/romance is just 9% of the anime while the remaining 89% focus on a "weird dude that grows spike hair out of his ass to fight a green alien with purple spiky wings".
Then all subsequent installments of the series is about this with almost no romance or drama at all.

What a ride right?
This is what the old fans are feeling right now.

Having watched most canonical Macross barring M7 (which I've just started), I'm inclined to think that there hasn't been a good one since the original. Delta has no high standard to live up to -- there is no shark to jump over and there hasn't been one for nearly 20 years at this point.

Which is fine. This episode was stupid but weirdly charming in its go-for-broke nature. I'll take this a bajillion times over the comparatively tame Frontier.

Looking forward to seeing where it goes.
