| I find it extremely difficult rating hentai. When I read non-H manga and watch non-H anime I go solely by enjoyment, but when I read a hentai manga or whatever there are all these complex variables that mixes it up. Did I enjoy it? Was it hot? Did I come? Was there plot? Was there plot? Was the plot hot? Was the other plot hot? Was my enjoyment based purely on hornyness? Did my hornyness increase because of the story? It's just so hard for me. (as in difficult) Especially when you consider how far behind hentai is in comparison. If a hentai OVA and a non-H anime OVA had the same story I would probably have rated the hentai much higher because "Oh, this hentai had a good story!" and that is unusual. Thoughts? Advice? Please help me, I'm stuck on my lists. [Just one or two threads have touched this subjects, and only barely] [There is really no good place for this post, as it concerns both manga and anime… Suggestions?] |

| Same as everything else: based on the art, the concept, and execution. Hence, even though I've read a bunch and watched a few, I've only rated one hentai anime and only a few manga better than 4/10. I'm not too crazy about most porn anyway, though. A really appealing story about forbidden love is way more exciting, even arousing I'll admit. |

| Rate it like you would any other manga. Story, arc , character and enjoyment. Obviously the story is commonly rated low because of the fact that story development in hentai just aren't really any good, it's more of just a set up for the sex scenes. Of course there are some with passable stories but still on a average/mediocre level overall. Sadly, there is quite a rise in short story hentai manga which just makes it more difficult to do when that manga is just a bunch of random hentai stories (usually aimed at a specific fetish). Most of this applies to characters as well. So because of these 2 categories, hentai is generally rated a lot lower than most non-hentai stuff. It's generally worse for animated hentai because it's known for not adapting everything (as in ends out of no where with no conclusion), skipping sex scenes, poor animation from certain studios, changing the adaption and so on. |

And yes, the story is important . Or maybe the story is not exactly the good word, it's more about the feel that it's "realistic" . Even absolutely fantasy or "super-coincidence-that-never-happen-in-real-life" stories can feel believeable , but for that it need the characters and the way they interact to evolve in a way that make the "Suspension of disbelief" happen . Like for any manga , what I'm interested in is the characters and their interaction, way more than the actual plot or story, in a sense. And some Hentai can provide that , they are not only porn, they are erotic, because they play efficiently with the feeling of "desire" and make those feelings reach the reader. See the stories are nothing fancy, it's just that the way it's done and the characters build up their interaction make it good. Recently I read a manga named Wasurena , and I though there was something with how it managed to bring the idea of "feverish desire", something quite subtile behind the simple graphical content (really, I'm not joking) . So I think the author did well for that one too. Maka-Maka is great, I think the author really did something with it, that go way more than being simple "yuri porn" . So far it's the best manga tagged as hentai I have read. That also bring me to the Yuri/Yaoi aspect : so a lot of them make the sexual content the central point, and they can be view as a sub genre of hentai sometime , no ? But then it look like it's way more easy for people to give credit or rate them than "heterosexual hentai" , for some reason . but sure ok , usually very good manga that have a lot of sexual content , and even do it the main aspect of the plot are either tagged as ecchi or romance (along with other genre) , but not hentai . Sometime it look like people think it will disregard them to tag them as hentai or something (but maybe I'm missing the point saying that, I don't know) . |

| Art is a huge factor. But often I rate for if they tackled issues any differently than how I read in others of the same typing. Did this manga have something special about it that I think makes it stand out compared to the other porny titles? My favorite yaoi manga has a black guy in it and a tragic ending and mostly consensual sex between the main pairing. Which is actually hard to come by in yaoi for some reason. Though black men it is easy to know why that is harder to come by in manga. XD but still he was very nicely drawn. Very sexy. Art was top notch. But really the most important part is, did I get off or excited by it? XD |

| I'd rate hentai by how hot the women are and probably, how fappable it is. But, I'm a lazy bastard, so I don't fap. Too much hand motion. Most hentai, story is non-existent, so there is no point to rating a hentai by the story. There might be a slight story in some hentai series, but, that story only exists for the start, and it just simply follows it, and never develops. For example, a series like "Please Rape Me!" follows the story of a man who likes rape, woman who can sense rape, and then that's all, it follows those two things. This was on the manga discussion topic, but, I mentioned an anime. Gonna kill me? Also, rating a hentai JUST by girls is kinda absurd, so I rate it with other factors, including size of breasts, which I do not want to be over-sized cow utters, because giant balloons, cow utters, whatever you want to call them, kinda look gross to me. This one might seem a bit weird, but I also use hairstyle. Not so much the face, but the hairstyle. For some reason, the hairstyle seems to stand out more than the face to me. (I might be delusional/on drugs). But, enough of this, I might end up writing an essay on how I rate hentai. Just a little explanation. There's manga like HanaFuda that are just beautiful (IMO) and are plot-centered. HanaFuda tells a classic story involving kitsune, and I liked the fantasy tone of it. (If anyone has a recommendation for similar hentai, please do tell!) There's a lot of manga and anime with interesting characters, like Domin-8 Me / Take On Me have. You have stuff like Bible Black, pushing extreme themes into the mainstream, and other hentai that just want to push the limits of taboo. And of course, some hentai is just so good at getting you aroused that it does it to perfection, triggering you're every nerve, every sense with all it's got. |

| The story, the character development and the art. Most only got the last one right, the story are just garbage and break the canon. The character somehow always turn into a slut from the beginning or at the end. X is a strong character but somehow she can't fight off bunch of rapist. Make no sense, come on. | Thank you all for your great answers, I'm such a slow poster myself… There is one problem with hentai though, I have discovered. Many (including me) read hentai when they are horny, and that can swing your mind in a total different set. For example I would never watch hentai when I'm in the mood for Ghibli, and I would never watch Ghibli when I'm in the mood. So when I'm not feeling for it, much of hentai can be garbage. And when I switch that same hentai can be arousing, e.g. enjoyable, while some really good non-H show might just bore me. So it becomes difficult to rate hentai the same as usual, as you enjoy different things in different modes. |
