I've recently started the light novels and I'm up to the 2nd one now. But my question is; do the prologue and epilogue count as chapters in my list? Because the 1st Volume has 5 chapters but plus the prologue and the epilogue it would be 7. So do they count as chapters or what?

Just increase the number of volumes read and when it's finished put whatever number of chapters that MAL has used. It's way easier that way.

Just for the heck of it I tend to put the chapters although yeah it's much easier to just go by volume. But I don't include prologues and epilogues into the count.

Yes they officially count. so prologue+ 5 chapters+ epilogue makes 7 chapters indeed.

Oh, really? I had no idea. But that's good to know, thank you.

More importantly... does it matter? Just do whichever you want lol, not like the entry is completed anyway

Reading fiction stories doesn't matter either. We read it because we want, because we like.
The proper way to count exist since it's used to determine how many chapter a finished novel series has. If it exists, it can be used, and it can be asked for and answered. That's all that matters.

As a complement of information, any interlude, special chapter, anything part of the story more than 2 pages long is technically a novel chapter. Meaning the afterwords aren't, for example. But prologue, interlude, epilogue, and anything else used to "cut" the story in smaller part in the book is more or less technically a chapter.

My point was that the main purpose of putting a number into your list is just to remember how much you've read, right? So regardless of whether it's the same system as the one MAL uses, as long as you remember your own system it's fine

Except that recording the number of chapter read for a novel can have various goals outside of remembering where you're at, so not needing to remember the number of chapter doesn't mean you don't want to put that number anyway. .

I didn't know it was that difficult to understand that not everyone is using a specific tool for the exact same reasons. Is it, really?

Sounds like the same amount of chapters for Tensura Vol. 3
