I have no idea,it's one of the best romances and arguably one of the few actual romances at that + you get amazing Shinkai visuals.Maybe they dislike that it doesn't follow a 'normal' formula.

I dislike it because it really bored me despite being so short. Nothing entertaining about it, other than the music at the end.

I also don't see what's 'smart' or 'deep' about a story about a guy who can't get over some childhood love.

It was no doubt a beautiful anime with a great premise. First half was executed beautifully. For me what did it in was the parts that followed that were weaker. For someone who is usually very easily emotionally invested, I didn't really feel any empathy for the characters the way the final part was executed. Which was a right shame since it had the potential to be excellent.

Kotonoha no niwa is proof Makoto Shinkai can pull it off, though.

Hate is a strong word. I would say more like disappointed.

Besides the transparent characters, it has an underwhelming, depressing, boring, inconclusive romance that's only notable for its art and music, which is already comparable to other Makoto Shinkai films.

....Except neither the characters nor the romance are important to the film. While Shinkai doesn't stray far from his usual theme of distance and people drifting apart, I'd say 5 cm/sec is the film that takes full advantage of that with an atmosphere, story, and cast that all drive that singular theme. I mean, it's even shown in the title - a slow but gradually increasing rate which things move. I've also heard distaste for it being too pure of a slice-of-life, so it comes off as dragged out and uneventful. That's fine though, as it's a hard movie to watch if you're expecting something stuff to happen, or for the romance to have some form of a conclusive ending. You really gotta adjust your mindset to enjoy the movie.

That being said, Rightstuf finally started shipping 5 cm/sec, so this topic came at an oddly appropriate time.

5/cm to me is all about the atmosphere pervading it. The story itself is not great since childhood couples are anyway not usually loves that work out beyond high school and the characters are given minimal attention, but the visuals and dialogue contribute to the melancholic atmosphere. It's all about the idea of having lost someone as time went by, and the idea of reaching a point in your life where you've entirely grown up and realize you can never go back in time and regain what you had.

It's not about the characterization, but rather that theme and the sad undertone accompanying it. However I'm sure that's not what everybody seeks out in a romance movie so it's understandable for people not to like it. At least it's incredibly visually beautiful even if you don't care for what sort of movie it is.

I actually am one of those who should like the genre, but I just can't empathize with Makoto Shinkai's characters. Umi ga Kikoeru is superior by far, imo.
He is still a good director for shorts and commercials.

Well I did like the first episode. Second episode was pointless. Third episode... what were they thinking ending it with that cringeworthy song? It completely destroyed the mood.

Still 7/10 for me

I still think Children Who Chase Lost Voices was his best work.

it was a well known song of the 90s in Japan. Debuted No. 18 and charted for 24 weeks
and its not cringeworthy enough tho
it was good actually
the music video was much better than the movie itself

I'm pretty sure the movie was inspired by that song, and its lyrics fit the theme of the movie perfectly.

edit: never mind, I went and double checked. It wasn't the original idea, but Shinkai does think it fits the story. Also as someone pointed out it was popular at the time set in the film.

Well, the song wasn't my cup of tea I guess. Episode two was actually my main problem with the show. If only they could've utilized that episode to actually develop the childhood girl.

I found it to be very forgettable. If it weren't for these notes I typed after watching it, I wouldn't have remembered anything about it.

Might contain spoilers.

Why are young couples in these kinds of anime such amazing poets?

Another sentimental and over-dramatic teen romance about a couple separated by school and unrequited love. About half way through the flowery dialog started to make my eyes roll. Beautiful visuals, but the story is too mundane and it leads to thin air.

I don't mind depressing stories as long as they aren't caused by completely stupid and unrealistic actions.

Woah, care to explain how their decisions were completely stupid and unrealistic?

I can't recall. My brain flushed this anime out of my memory shortly after I watched it. I probably should have said stupid OR unrealistic. There may have been some degree of realism, but I vaguely remember someone doing something really stupid.

I blame the guy for not trying hard enough. The main character from Kimi no Iru Machi moves to Tokyo to find his girlfriend yet the guy from 5cps did nothing despite knowning their relationship has issues. But why I hated the movie was mainly because I feel like the director just wants to make audience cry by writing about an unlucky relationship. I think I would have cried if I didn't realize it from the first part (because its god dammed obvious). Its the only show I gave 1/10 I think xD
