Why do some people get upset when a good character DOESN'T die?

I don't understand this at all. Does tragedy somehow make a story deeper and more profound?

Example 1: "The main character should have died."
Example 2: "Someone close to the main character should have died."

For instance: The main character goes through a LOT of shit for 24 episodes to only die in the end or have someone close to that character—perhaps someone he/she had been waiting for—die. These kinds of endings piss me off, and I can't fathom why people actually want shows or movies to end this way.

it only annoys me when they make a big deal outta the supposed death scene (as in a lot of flashbacks, lots of crying) only for the character to return a few moments later without a scratch
characters dying doesnt make the anime deeper though

Rather than simply getting upset over a good character that didn't die, it's perhaps that the character in question escaped death in an unjustified way, or more simply put, plot armor kicked in. At times, yes, it's a relief to see your favorite character saved. At other times, it makes people feel cheated out of some good drama.

Yeah, that annoys me too. I'm talking more about people who get pissed because an ending isn't tragic enough, saying that the main character or someone close to the main character should have died. Like, why?

"If people don't die how can we ever relate because we all lost our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers friends and family."

Just how some emo kids view^

Personally due to how much I dislike a character.

I added some examples to the OP. I kept it vague because I don't want to spoil anything.

Hmm, some shows give a feeling of immortality to the main cast, which makes the show less believable. I'm not saying this is always the case, but when it is I wish someone would die.

I completely agree. However, a lot of people get upset when random tragedies don't befall the main character or characters close to him/her, as if something—anything—should have killed them off, and I'm trying to understand why.

What's the appeal of tragedy?

Lol. Fair enough.

So long as their is a believable, justifiable reason for the character to survive than there's no issue. It's only when a story gives a BS, out of nowhere reason to keep a character alive.

Although usually easier to make realistic within the plot, the reverse is also just as bad. I've seen a decent amount of characters get killed off for obvious shock factor, and when actually giving their death some thought makes no sense.

Cause most of the time the character is saved for what can be described as an asspull.

Also, characters dying usually goes with other characters growing up and changing, so it helps them develop into something more.

Good points, and I see what you're saying.

I clarified the example again in the OP. It would be easier if I could just name the anime I'm referring to, but spoilers...

Well, it CAN make it deeper, but it's extremely difficult to do. My best example would be the movie The Sky Crawlers. If you've seen it, you should know what I'm referring to.

Most of the time death in anime is treated pretty badly and dampens the experience. A good example of this, I think, would be one particular part of Death Note

Because, they don't like that character abd they want realism and no Deus Ex Machina shit.
