Do you think an cast of ugly characters can enhance an anime?

I personally think it can. Aku no Hana is ugly as fuuuuuuuck but it added to the stressful, anxiety-filled atmosphere.

Whereas, I personally thought horror anime that had characters look too pretty made it a bit harder to immerse. Uglier, grittier art made things seem more real and a lot easier to immerse in. Seeing a loli get maimed only made me chuckle. The ugliness that was Yami Shibai was why I considered it good in terms of artistic direction.

Do you agree or disagree MAL?

It depends on the theme.
I don't want my moe having ugly characters.

No, that's like saying a cast of moe characters can affect a show

Art style or not, it was still a pretty poor adaptation though LOL

ep 7 of aku no hana has been a better, more impactful anime experience than anything i've seen in the last decade. so, that's my opinion.

Purposely ugly art is just stupid and caters to that elitist mentality that being unique is auto good. I prefer anime that uses its own style effectively, such as Ping Pong and yes, Aku no Hana.

the whole scene really captured me. i've bought most of the manga now thanks to it. i kinda wish the visuals were as gritty.

but to the topic, i do think 'ugly' characters can add a lot. they could be ugly in a cutesy setting, rather than the usual dark anime they usually appear in, and i reckon it could do wonders.

Definitely, but only because I'm a huge fan of diverse art--or at least I am now. As someone above noted, as long as it's effective and compatible with its tone. Ping Pong, Kemonozume, Mind Game, Kaiba, Genji, etc.

Don't think it will work. Appearance is something pretty important in an anime I guess. Although it could be diffrent

Only if it is balanced by good-looking characters.
An anime with a variety of character with different appearances is preferable to one where all characters are either beautiful or all ugly.

I don't think they have to be ugly, but if they are unique then they are much more memorable (unless you are binge watching, in that case you will always know) but even then you will forget them afterwards.

Of course they can. Or do you really think a whole cast of moe characters is just irrelevant? Also, if the whole cast is moe, then probably the plot will center around their characterization and silly things. The artwork, by definition, must have a reason to be used. Each story requires different artworks. If, whoever is responsible for all this, put something there just for the sake of it, that means it's a shitty animu. Well, I honestly think the artwork has to fit with the whole premise and plot.

As for the OP: "ugly characters" would be the wrong term to use imho. Just look to Ping Pong, I believe the strange artwork represents the humanized and character-driven story. With the art, they want to show how different each individual is, and give focus to their individuality and peculiarities. It wouldn't be appropriate to use the conventional artwork, since the objective is being unique and as "human" as possible. That's how I see it anyway. I would prefer call it "artsy" than "ugly".

I like realistic art style. I also prefer when the characters are good looking but are made to have exaggerated expressions during moments of fear. It works better than ugly characters imo.

I guess. One Piece is full of ugly supporting characters, but it enhances the carnival/circus-like tone the series is going for.

I seriously dislike animes without at least 1 decent looking anime character. I just get pissed of because I want some eye candy not something that'll burn your eyes out.

Its very typical of anime's to create character that attract viewers, So almost every character is depicted with charm and Kawai, Even cruel villains and horror animes. I don't mind it, Its endearing.
But it you grow bit tired and its rather predictable when they base all the characters in the exact same archetype. (There are some exceptions)
It would be interesting to see ugly character and also unnerving if you are used to Kawaii faces, but I would say it does urge curiosity for the show.
I saw Princess Jellyfish, It conveys ugly characters but its a good anime

This reminded of that double dating theory, take always a dumbugly friend with you and you will look perfect lol.

What exactly is an ugly character? I can think of a few annoying ones, but ugly.. oh, the last one i saw was in Dragon Ball, and what came to my mind was more close to nastiness rather than ugliness. Just ended up annoying me.

As far as not making everyone looking the same i totally agree, now if ugly characters would enhance the viewer's watching experience..im quite not sure.

I support both ways,if you had main characters for an action series will you try to creat a main character that his is very attactive from all the ways or a cute character that makes you feel he isnt the one who must fight in signgle terms a super kawai face that dont even look badass,so my theory about your thread is what the mangaka try to pass on the people?!They choose every kind of role that will attract public the victim must be an innocent that makes you feel he is weak character and in japan they love to see an attactive innocent woman in evil hands they love to see her reaction as a victim,Every mangaka has its own opinion have you been able to see "shingeki no bahamut"Do you find those mcs attractive or badass im reffering to leone favaro and lidfort kaisar? From series to series you will ascertainment that every character they create is a little of their selfs their past, their feelings, their dark and light side of themselves thats why i love japan because creating a story to reaching a crazy level that nobody is able to think!

Nakamura (Aku no hana) looks ugly in anime but she's cute in manga. I think if I read the manga before watching the anime I won't hate her that much. Because she's cute. lol

I'm behind that idea. Recently most of characters are too sweet-like, innocent looking. I wouldn't go too far with that ugly part but it's better when anime don't stray much from reality and not everyone looks like a doll. Like Steins Gate for example - main cast had a bunch of different people.

I care about their personality, not looks. If characters are ugly (their looks) but interesting in personality I dont mind or care about their looks. I dont think that they "enhance" show in any way by making them looks ugly but it surely does not ruins my anime.
