Use this post to nominate 1 anime song. Read the rules over on the main page and don't forget to upload your track someplace.

All nominations will be closed after 10 tracks are nominated or until next Sunday rolls around. After that, we'll proceed to a voting phase. Feel free to discuss your nomination or other people's picks in this thread.

CHANGED ON PG 2

Very difficult choice. I wanted to use either of the Delgados songs from Gunslinger Girl, or Walking Through the Empty Age from Texhnolyze (but that seems more fit for a 'closure' week) - this is a really immense category, and I feel every person is going to have to widdle it down to the song that they find utmost represents despair.

I am interpreting despair as the utter bankruptcy of hope. It's not as moving or passionate as sorrow, fear, or sadness. It is a more dull thud, a pang deep inside that overrides your whole life. Despair need not even be downtempo or dramatic, it need only be bankrupt of hope. Therefor m choice is:

Title: Komm, Susser Tod (or: Come, Sweet Death)
Artist: Shiro Sagisu and Arianne
Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion End of Evangelion
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCLoNOYcVQU

Literally a song about wishing for death after the failure of a relationship. Having lost the light of your life, you BEG for death. This song is especially hateful for life in that it takes the structure of an extremely hopeful classical piece, Patchelbel's Canon, and turns it into pure despair. A heart-wrenching song for a soul-wrenching movie. It all returns to nothing - it all keeps tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down........

No surprise at all that the first nominated piece is Evangelion related. :3

Yeah, and it's a crappy song to boot.

/runs

Well, in that vein I know what I'm going to nominate. Will go home to double check it is the right track.

Yeah. There's plenty of decent tracks i would have nominated from the tv series third soundtrack, but ah well.

Well technically I think you could argue that End of Evangelion and the Evangelion TV series are separate but related productions...

Ditto.

I think I'll have to ruminate on this one for a while.

EDIT:

Actually, no I don't.

Yes, people could argue that point, but I'd rather not see it. If pieces from ARIAs Animation, Natural, Origination, and Arietta had been nominated last week, I would have been a sad panda and done something against it.

Morbid lyrics set to inappropriately upbeat music. Plus it's a bit of an earworm.

In my case I don't particularly like it because I've always found the song bright and happy (I know...) and seriously at odds with the tone of the rest of the movie. Plus I was surrounded for years by a bunch of fans that raved about how good it was. :(

It might be worth clarifying what makes something 'different' though. Aria's not a great example since the music is all very similarly themed and by the same composer, but what about anime where the movie/OAV and TV series really are separate productions? An example off the top of my head: Rurouni Kenshin. Huge difference in the soundtracks between the OAVs and the TV series. Not even the same tone, let alone composer.

EDIT: another, hairier example: Negima. The original TV series has one composer, the Shaft re-take and the first two OAVs share a different one, and the new OAVs distributed with recent volumes of the manga have a third composer. Each one has a fairly different style to it.

I guess maybe it might be a bit of a case-by-case basis thing I guess.

Fair point. My willingness to tolerate it would be dependent on the issue of different composers. So ARIAs are right out. If a Kenshin OVA 1 & 2 got a track in, that'd also be a no.

On the other hand, a FMA and FMA Brotherhood track in any given week would be fine. Same goes for a Darker than Black and Darker than Black 2 track. (Now I'm going to watch as someone brings up a different example to make my head explode.)

Anyhow, looks like I'll be doing my best to toss a Red Garden track into the mix... unless I want to save it for next week. We'll see!

Still leaves Evangelion out though regardless. Unless someone wants to nominate some Bach. :P

ENDING SONG TO THE OAV PLEASE.

The second ending is not a bad choice either, despite the corn.

This has a good feel of despair, especially in the first half. If you've seen the series, then i expect you to remember this piece straight away. The scenes scream despair.

Oh screw this. I keep on second guessing my own selection and... I updated my first post with a nomination.

Some new Kajiura versus some old Kajiura!

The corny factor is what kills it for me. Also, I had to listen to the ending song to the OAV and it's... weird. I liked the BGM piece that the ending song was derived from though.

I've been meaning to nominate something Giant Robo related, but can't decide if I should go with a Latin chant or a pipe organ.

This is about the last thing that would pop into my mind for this theme, but reflecting on it it would work pretty well. Not wanting to influence your decision or anything mind you :P
