We love to mention 'the line' but some very successful and popular shows like Durarara never got a season two and yet some other shows with very poor sales get a second season... The fact that we can name some exceptions doesn't at all change the truth of the simple statement underlying it: properties that are more profitable are more likely to continue. And one of the main ways an anime becomes profitable is if people buy the DVDs and BDs. Therefore, many of my purchases are done in hopes of seeing sequels get animated. While there are dozens of other factors, it's still a significant factor, and just about the only one we as fans and consumers have any input into. Not disputing that, and Durarara may get another season... one day... just wondering about my question about the decisions to make sequels vs. making new stuff. More from the standpoint of the producers than the customers. Somewhat known quantities in sequels (which seem to drop season after season) vs. unknown but potentially even higher selling new series. As a customer all you can do is support your favorite show in the hopes that more will be made. Then it is out of your hands. |

hpulley said: You mean why someone would choose to buy BD/DVD for one anime work but not for another? I would say that the effect of peer group pressure from 2ch or any social group is minimal because otaku are usually not very social, particularly regarding their hobby. And even for casual fans who buy BD/DVD, they do not often find a lot of people to talk about it. From what I gather, social group almost never features in any discussion about buying or watching anime BD/DVD. So that is out. But I guess I phrased my question poorly because I really meant: why do people buy Girls Und Panzer rather than Kotoura-san? What, beyond them forgetting to record Girls Und Panzer but remembering to record Kotoura-san would make them buy one show over the other? Do they prefer Gargantia over Majestic Prince more because of the character designs, the seiyuu, the music, the story, the characters? Is it mostly their own choice? Is it because 2ch or their social group says it would be cool to own one but uncool to own the other one? Is it because they read the original material? Or do many of them discover the original material after the anime comes out or when it is announced? As for the original material, a lot of bestselling adaptation works with >10k sales indeed come from fans of the original material (e.g. SAO, Bakemonogatari etc). We can see some of the "brand buying" when titles jump to high places right after it starts to be solicited in Amazon but the anime may not even have aired. But it is not limited to the most popular works, it also what happened in the case for MaoYuu, a fairly popular novel, for example. On the other hand, anime can also increase awareness and get people to discover the original material -- this is perhaps even the bigger reason for an adaptation anime to be made than pushing the anime BD/DVD sales. This of course also happens in even well known works like SAO or Bakemonogatari too, but then the thinking is that such magic will work for lesser known works. And back to your original question of why someone chooses to buy the anime of one work over another, I guess the reasons I listed also apply (e.g.to own). I guess your question is more about why one wants to own and collect one series but not another. And you are right in saying that it is a combination of character designs, seiyuu, music, story, directing, animation etc that get people to want to buy. Just being interesting enough to continue watching the whole series on TV is not good enough. There must be something that clicks. And here is where moe elements come into play -- it could be just the one trick to push the appeal above the line where one wants to own it. That said at the end the balance is still necessary - most people would not just want to buy a work that is just a parade of moe elements even though certain moe elements may be needed to be there to get people to the point of buying it. And so at the end story, directing, character designs, music etc all play some roles (which is something that "plot is king and everything else is trivial" thinking that is so commonly found among western fans fails to take into account) And this "balance" is what happening with Gargantia. For Majestic Prince, actually opinion about it has improved somewhat since ep.4-5 as fans start to adjust their expectation and see it as the one show that most properly shows robots in space combat. So it may just see its sales improve with time. hpulley said: This is not dubious at all, as jmal has testified himself. This reason is mentioned in forums often enough that I have to take it seriously. Fans buy the BD/DVD to hope for a 2nd season but whether it will get one of course depends on the publisher at the end. And for titles with poor sales that get a second season, I am sure this has to do with commercial calculation - if they deem there are gain to be had with a second season, like something new to push (like new volumes of the original material) for example, that justifies the cost of making the anime then the chances of the anime being made is higher. And how the BD/DVD sales perform for the first season is one factor for consideration. The support for a second season seems a bit dubious. We love to mention 'the line' but some very successful and popular shows like Durarara never got a season two and yet some other shows with very poor sales get a second season... so I would love to know the producer's reasoning too for why they prefer doing a second season over a first season of something new. But they may not give out that sort of information. |

| So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

| Sorry, 'dubious' was a poor word choice. I should have said high sales of discs alone do not necessarily guarantee a second season, nor do poor sales preclude one. I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone from supporting a show they like. I definitely encourage people to support their favorite shows. |

| Just to show how overwhelmingly positive fans in Japan think of Gargantia ep.5, here is the voting result after it was aired on Nico Nico Douga. Here 1 means LOVE IT (it is the opposite of the western way when a larger number means better) and we are seeing 94% voting "1". And the number of viewers were over 25,000 (you can see the number at the lower right corner), most of whom can be assumed to have voted (since it is so easy to vote). Granted Nico Douga viewers do not represent the whole fandom in Japan - in fact there is certain mutual antimony feeling between Nico Douga people and 2ch people, but it should provide some idea about the almost universal high opinion about this episode that I mentioned earlier. ![]() |

Because GuP was designed to appeal to a highly motivated niche market (tank lovers) who are not disinclined to purchase things (as tank magazine and model sales show). Kotoura had no such niche appeal. Because GuP action sequences are something that you would want to see again, and the better the detail the better the experience. Kotoura has no such scenes. And finally because GuP was, and this is based on objective information, 3,872 times better than Kotoura. Seriously, Kotoura started great, but it never found its voice, swtiching between tragedy, drama, comedy, and ecchi. GuP knew what it was and then did it extremely well. “The fox has many tricks, and the hedgehog only one, but that is the best of all”. Pretty much sums up the difference. |

| Predictable sales for Evangelion. Though I am not sure how can Girls and Panzer sell above 30k but Zetsuen no Tempest can't even break 10k. I did watch the first episode of Girls and Panzer but that was quite boring. |

Judging a show on just one episode is moronic. Plenty of great shows take a few episodes to build the background. I personally guarantee you that if you watch all 12 episode, boring will be the LAST thing you say about this series. You may not like it, different tastes for different people, but you will certainly not say it was dull. |

You might think so, but I've come off an episode that I've loved on more than one occasion onto the episode discussion threads to see it being torn to pieces... which has made me start thinking more critically about said episode and revising that "loved" down to merely "enjoyed". I'm sure there are plenty of other people who have the same thing on other forums, maybe without even realising it is happening. And then there's the factors of watching shows in the first place. There are many things that I simply wouldn't have watched had I not kept hearing good things about them from people whose opinions I respect. Love Live, for example. Granted, even were I someone who regularly imported from Japan I still wouldn't have bought it, but there will be plenty of people out there who try stuff they wouldn't have otherwise looked at, just because other people are saying good things about it, and then end up liking it. The impact of social factors may not be something that comes to mind when someone says why they buy a series that they've enjoyed enough to purchase, but it's probably by far the biggest factor. Indeed it could probably, single-handedly, make the difference between, say, something that sells 5k and something that sells 50k. |

| By coincidence, Crunchyroll just interviewed Bones' Toshihiro Kawamoto: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-802661/sakura-con-interviews-toshihiro-kawamoto-reki-kawahara-eir-aoi-luna-haruna Two questions ended up answering my question about sequels and cours: Q Given that you've worked with some prolific series like Gundam, City Hunter, and then Venus Wars was your project. Were there any fears or worries you had about working with established series? A No particular concerns; but there is a strong way of thought in the industry in terms of a business standpoint. It's easier to be successful with known properties, so there is sort of a tendency to prefer sequels over original works, if they're already known. Q Given that, are there any series you haven't worked with yet that you want to? A Sequels, hmm, that's a really difficult question. I think from a sales or a business success standpoint, it would really make sense to do a sequel to Cowboy Bebop. But that would violate the director's policy to create that, so that's a bit difficult. Instead of existing works, creating some kind of new or original work that had some sort of long-term popularity and long-term series, of course that would be great for our company to have some kind of new, original popularity with long-term popularity. There was a tendency in the past to create a series in episodes of 26 episodes, they would call "two-packs". The tendency now is more towards 13-episodes, or "one-pack" series. So there's kind of a difficult situation continuing in which we will create 13 episodes of a series and then make the decision of whether to create an additional 13 episodes. So it's getting a bit more difficult. |

My original statement is more directed towards a narrower situation of social factors, namely peer group pressures about buying a title or not buying because it is cool or uncool to do so. The thing is outside of the Sales Thread in 2ch, the subject of buying anime BD/DVD is seldom raised, much less discussed. So there is really no such social pressure about any PURCHASE decision. And another point I meant to state is that fans do not really talk much about what discs they own. So in terms of buying and owning, I do not really see too much of social peer group pressure at work. Of course as you said, people may have their opinion influenced by the general reception from other fans and people may take up a show just because it got so popular (good example would be GirlPan). All these happen before a fan reaches the point of deciding whether to buy the discs of a show. And I would not really agree that this social factor is "the biggest factor" of purchase decision unless you define that "social factor" as anything that affects personal preference and awareness that comes from the popularity of the work among other people, and even that I would still say that because at the end a person decides if he likes a work mostly by him watching the work himself and reacting to it in love/dislike feeling, personal factor should still be a much more important factor for someone's purchase decision. The impact of social factors may not be something that comes to mind when someone says why they buy a series that they've enjoyed enough to purchase, but it's probably by far the biggest factor. Even in the sales thread there is not really "talks" per se - more like people posting the BDs they bought and others react by posting some short greetings like "Panzer Vor!" for GirlPan disc bought. With a very good average quality in this season, I wonder if they are going to sell quite well, too. I honestly have no idea about which shows that will sell or not this time. >___< Estimates would very very very rough at this point. An estimate for, say, Shingeki could easily end up off by 20,000 units either way. Sequels can be guesstimated based on previous seasons, at best. But to completely pull some estimates out of my ass, not even looking at Stalker's estimates: 20k+ Shingeki no Kyojin 15k-20k To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000% Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga nai. 10k-15k Suisei no Gargantia 5k-10k Kakumeiki Valvrave Hataraku Maou-sama! 0-5k Everything else Guess for averages, not just Vol. 1. There are some other potential 5k sellers like Date A Live or HenNeko or Nyaruko W or Azazel-san Z. Railgun and OreImo I have a feeling will drop below 20k. At least OreImo anyway. UtaPri should clear 20k easily for v1 with the event ticket but drop lower for 2-5 like season one. Shingeki could be 15k, could be 50k, fuck if anyone knows at this point. I'm probably not giving Gargantia enough credit but it's really hard to know how much of its rank comes from the act that its MSRP is higher (which results in higher ranking). Hell it could be 20k for all we know. Only 3 boxes and one format, so it shouldn't see a lot of release attrition. There is lots and lots of time for this to change completely. Therefore my guesses are meaningless! (And in my heart, Yuyushiki will always be 1,000,000+.) symbv said: zeroyuki92 said: I have meant to do an overall study of the upcoming sales for this season's anime somewhere at the mid-point of the season, but I guess it is no harm doing it a bit earlier since the interest is there. With a very good average quality in this season, I wonder if they are going to sell quite well, too. I honestly have no idea about which shows that will sell or not this time. >___< Jmal has given some guesses without using the Stalker projection sales data, so I think I would use the Stalker to shed some light on the performance of this season's anime so far, plus some observations I've made by tracking the Stalker projection figures since the season's beginning. As usual, caveats need to be taken for Stalker projection, in particular the aberration of over/underestimation because the sales of the title may be skewed towards online or storefront retailers. And one needs to understand that the projection data can change, sometimes drastically, as fans' impression of the show shifts as the season progresses. That said, the relative performances of the shows have pretty much settled down and so I believe we should get a good idea of how the sales of the shows will end up at the end. The following is the current ranking of VOLUME ONE for the titles of this season. Key is Total estimated sales / BD estimated sales / DVD estimated sales / Title 46.0k 30.9k 15.1k SnK (Shingeki no Kyojin) 27.7k 13.8k 13.9k UtaPrince2 12.2k 10.5k 1.7k Railgun2 12.2k 12.2k ---- Gargantia 8.7k 7.6k 1.1k OreImo2 8.2k 6.5k 1.7k HaMaou (hataraku maou-sama) 5.4k 5.0k 0.4k HenNeko 5.0k 4.1k 1.0k Valvrave 5.0k 4.1k 0.9k Date A Live 5.0k 1.7k 3.3k Karneval 3.8k 2.8k 1.0k Azazel-san2 3.6k 2.7k 0.9k OreGairu 3.4k 3.1k 0.3k Crime Edge 3.3k 2.5k 0.8k Nyaruko2 3.0k 1.7k 1.3k Devil Survivor2 2.7k 1.9k 0.8k RDG (red data girl) 2.2k 1.9k 0.3k Aiura 2.2k 2.2k --- Muromi-san 2.1k 1.2k 0.9k ZBL (zettai bouei leviathan) 2.1k 1.6k 0.5k PhotoKano 2.0k 1.6k 0.4k Samurai Bride 2.0k 1.5k 0.5k MJP (majestic prince) 1.3k 1.2k 0.1k Yuyushiki 1.0k 0.6k 0.4k Hayate5 0.7k 0.5k 0.2k Aku no Hana 0.4k 0.2k 0.2k Arata Kangatari Observations 1. SnK is doing very very strong now, but the projection has never been as high as now (>45k). A estimation of total sales of over 40k came only after the airing of the latest episode (with what happened to Eren and his team on his first mission). For a long while it was competing with UtaPrince2 for the top slot in the ranking with number varying around 30k. The jump of the recent week has been astounding. 2. UtaPrince2 has weakened slightly from over 30k to around 28k now but this is probably going to be an underestimation because this has been the case for the first season. The actual sales can easily be 30-40% more than the 28k estimation by Stalker. However, since vol.1 of the first season sold around 24k, if vol.1 of the second season sold 35k (adjusted for the likely underestimation by Stalker), this would mean a very rare occasion of a second season of an anime doing vastly better than its first season. It would be interesting to see how this will turn out. 3. Gargantia is, like SnK, reaching new height in terms of final projected sales of Stalker. And again like SnK, this is not always the case for Gargantia to have this >12k projected sales. For several weeks it had settled on a sales projection of around 9.5k, after debuting with an estimation of almost 11k. The big jump of the sales projection can largely be attributed to the very favorably received ep.5 (it got universal praises for the story, directing, animation and character arts) and to a lesser extent, ep.4, which prepared the ground for ep.5. 4. Railgun2's performance has been quite consistent at around 12k-13k. Its performance never gets much of a strong boost when an episode is aired, perhaps because the "real meat" of the story of the Sisters Arc has only just started to get moving by the latest episode. 5. By contrast, OreImo2 has seen more noticeable fall in sales projection. It used to be one of the Top Four of the season, but now lags behind the current Top Four so much that it is not likely for it to make it back unless something drastic happens to shows currently at top (always a possibility though, particularly fans' reaction to story twists in SnK or Gargantia could turn sour). It used to have projection of over 10k but now is settling on a figure of around 9k. Much will depend on how the series ends, which may provide its own surprises and twists (since the novel will also end at the same time as the anime which means nobody knows how the whole story is going to end) for the fans to react and decide if this is an anime they want to keep. 6. HaMaou has been gradually edging up in sales projection and ranking in the league since the start of the season. A true dark horse of the season I would say. It started with around 5.5k projection but now it is projected to be selling >8k, joining other titles as the top tier of this season's titles. 7. After that we see a cluster of titles with around 5-6k sales projection. HenNeko started strongly but that was probably due to fans of the LN buying early. It is settling at around 5.5k which still makes it one of the most successful shows this season. Valvrave, despite very split opinions on its story, manages to keep a stable position at 5k in terms of sales projection, only dropping slightly from its early estimation of 5.5-6k. Date A Live also manages to stay at 5k sales projection, even edging slightly upwards with the latest Yoshino arc. Karneval is even more stable - I think it has been at 5k since almost the beginning. 8. The next cluster is those between 3k to 4k, still above Manabi line but depending on the initial expectation some may be considered more as disappointment than success. Azazel-san2 has slipped from its early projection of over 4.5k but Nyaruko2 and Devil Survivor 2 slipped even further. Both started from 4.5k-5k but are now only at around 3k. Nyaruko may have suffered from franchise fatigue, and Devil Survivor 2 definitely suffers from adaptation choices and changes that some fans of the game do not agree. On the other hand, Crime Edge has shown real robustness and is doing better than many had expected, particularly considering the manga itself is not that well known and its fetish subject matter. Some say that the loli character design helps a lot here and although I agree it is a big factor I am not sure whether it alone can explain its good performance so far. By comparison, performance of OreGairu has roughly matched with expectation. The sales projection looks modest, but apparently the LN sales have been given a decent boost, so I'd say this should count as a success for this title. 9. Below Manabi line, RDG is doing slightly better than expected. Its reception has actually improved in the last 2 episodes as the world setting becomes clearer and the story gets more interesting in the view of the audience. After RDG, there is another fairly large cluster of 2k sales projection. Aiura and Muromi-san have improved, albeit very slightly, since the season's start. ZBL is doing better than many expected. PhotoKano and Samurai Bride have dropped slightly since season's start. MJP never gets good performance, even after the relatively well received ep.5. The character design and its juxtaposition of gags in seriously looking space combat do not seem to sit well with audience. The latest ep.6 is said to be an important episode that may change viewer's impression of the show. It would be interesting to see whether it really will turn the tide for the show, which currently is THE LOSER of the three original robot mecha shows (quite a rarity itself) of this season. 10. At the bottom we have the shows that do not even have 2k projection. Yuyushiki definitely does worse than expected. The show itself still gets quite a lot of attention, as testified by the many anime sites in Japan which cover the latest aired episode, but this does not turn into disc sales it seems. Character design may be a factor but it may also be the "Kill Me Baby" phenomenon: People enjoy it well enough to talk about it but not want to buy it for repeated viewing. Hayate5 is always presumed to sell badly, even though the character design (and story) seems to have improved significantly from the disastrous season 4. Arata Kangatari is another title deemed to sell badly, but still one wonders why it is performing this badly. Perhaps the female audience are all pulled away by UtaPrince. As for Aku no Hana it started from 1k and now it is 0.7k. Heated debates and discussions have died down but occasionally it is still being discussed, so at least it has not turned into an "air show" (meaning one that is ignored and not watched). Recently the live action footage of the show was shown after the anime, and it only fueled comments that the show would have been best made into a full live action show instead. Thank you very much, jmal, symbv. They are even more detailed than what I'm looking for. While I know that they are still going to change a lot, at least I know that at least they could be a quite representative data for sales expectation :) Some short comments from me : 1. 20-45k for Kyoujin is a good thing! I'm glad that good anime are selling like hotcakes. 2. Aside from Kyoujin, my (and many other) most favorite would be Gargantia. I'm actually quite uncertain if it could has a good sales performance, but it seems that it will get what it deserves. 10k is not spectacular, but still good :) 3. My other favorites such as Railgun and Hataraku are also performing well :D 4. Oregairu is my sleeper hit of the season and I think I should be happy that it at least reach the manabi line, I was afraid that it will only perform as "air anime". Kinda curious about it's performance after the drama start to hit, though (Well, in the end the LN has a boost so I think it should be a moderate success. 5. LOL aku no hana. |

Looking at the Top 10 BDs on the Oricon website... I see 7 non-anime releases with a release date of 2013-05-10. Perhaps there are more of those in the 11~20 ranks, which pushed the majority of anime outside the Top 20, or anime just happened to be weaker yesterday. |

Love Live! may continue on charting as it seems to keep finding its way back into the Top 100 on Amazon and this week and next week are dead weeks too. |

Raigrex said: I'm new to these BD/DVD release so how long does it usually take for them to release each volume of anime? Each volume is usually released on a monthly basis, unless they are delayed for whatever reason (such as GaruPan as a recent example) or they are intentionally released in a weird way (Magi v2 was released 1 week after v1 for example, before it went back to the regular 1/month thing). OVAs, movies, basically anything not a normal TV anime... have different release time periods. symbv said: ^ After the rush of non-anime titles yesterday that drowned out the anime titles, finally the more robust anime titles came back to life LOL That sure looks like it. I guess some of those non-anime titles may have not been that strong at all... since they didn't do entirely well on their actual release days. Imagine if no anime charted on one day, lol. I wonder if that has ever happened before? |

| Almost one week has passed since I posted my analysis of the sales forecast of this season's anime made by Amazon Stalker. A revisit shows some drastic changes for some titles, and some of those are continuing reverberation of certain major impact episodes in the series. Sales forecast of volume 1 according to Amazon Stalker Key: May06 forecast -> May12 forecast 46.0k -> 76.1k SnK (Shingeki no Kyojin) 27.7k -> 27.7k UtaPrince2 12.2k -> 14.4k Gargantia 12.2k -> 12.6k Railgun2 8.2k -> 9.2k HaMaou (hataraku maou-sama) 5.0k -> 9.2k Valvrave 8.7k -> 9.1k OreImo2 5.4k -> 5.7k HenNeko 5.0k -> 5.0k Karneval 5.0k -> 4.9k Date A Live 3.6k -> 4.5k OreGairu 3.8k -> 3.9k Azazel-san2 3.4k -> 3.9k Crime Edge 3.3k -> 3.4k Nyaruko2 3.0k -> 3.0k Devil Survivor2 2.7k -> 2.7k RDG (red data girl) 2.0k -> 2.5k MJP (majestic prince) 2.2k -> 2.4k Muromi-san 2.0k -> 2.0k Samurai Bride 2.2k -> 2.1k Aiura 2.1k -> 1.9k PhotoKano 1.3k -> 1.4k Yuyushiki 2.1k -> 1.0k ZBL (zettai bouei leviathan) 1.0k -> 1.0k Hayate5 0.7k -> 0.8k Aku no Hana 0.4k -> 0.5k Arata Kangatari Observations: 1. Reaction from the drastic ending of ep.5 in SnK continues to generate impact, which is also helped by a couple of TV programs focusing on the manga and the anime (the author's interview in particular drew a lot of attention). It has not dropped below #3 in Amazon BD sales ranking since several days ago and its BD sales forecast has more than doubled since last week. The BD/DVD combined sales forecast has now entered Madoka territory, which could mean that the number is no longer a useful guide to the actual sales, simply because the sales points awarded for titles at the topmost rank are much more likely to be off to a large extent. It would be very interesting to see how the sales ranking and forecast goes as the series progress with its plot twist. 2. Gargantia continues to benefit from the universally acclaimed ep.5 and since last week has added another 2.2k in its sales forecast. It has now overtaken Railgun2 to become the third bestselling title for this season according to Stalker. 3. Neither UtaPrince2 nor Railgun2 have changed much over the past week. The stunning start of the Sisters Arc was only broadcast yesterday so we might still see shift in its ranking and sales forecast over the next few days. 4. HaMaou continues to benefit from the grand battle with Lucifer and Orba. The latest episode is a filler (mostly anime original) but still got generally positive feedback. The sales forecast continues to climb and has added another 1k over the past week. It has now overtaken OreImo2 in its sales forecast even though OreImo2 has added 0.4k over the last week (that said, it is more likely that OreImo2 has its sales forecast underestimated by Stalker so the end result may still be OreImo2 having better sales). 5. On the other hand, Valvrave clearly got progressively worse feedback from ep.3 to ep.4 and then to ep.5 - the story, the choice of what details to highlight, the character depiction, even music all got quite a bit of criticisms. HOWEVER, the introduction of event ticket has HELPED A LOT. The prospect of having big names like Mizuki Nana joining the event clearly boosted consumer's appetite. And just look at the sales forecast, it added 4.2k since the event ticket announcement, almost doubling its initial forecast. THIS IS THE POWER OF EVENT TICKET !! 6. While HenNeko keeps on accumulating sales by consistently high level of appealing and cute scenes one episode after another, it is again the robustness of Crime Edge that catches the eyes. The last episode of the student camp arc is still having its impact - the appeal of Iwai-chan is really stronger than many expected, and it added 0.5k (or almost 15%) to its sales forecast. 7. MJP is another title that is worth taking note. As I said last week, opinions of the show have been on the uptick over ep.4-5 as the show gathered a reputation of being the one show in this season that looks closest to a traditional giant mecha show (particularly in the fighting scenes). Fans also warmed to the ep.6 which concludes the military school arc. Its sales forecast is still in the low tier but it has added 0.5k which is 25% of last week's forecast, and that is quite impressive. 8. ZBL has seen its sales forecast dropped significantly from 2.1k to 1.0k, but as I said last week the 2.1k forecast was higher than most expected. Apparently the sales forecast just took time to settle down (as it was solicited in Amazon really late) and the current prediction of 1.0k is much closer to what many expected it to sell. 9. And all the other titles are quite stable as they all stay within +/- 0.2k of its last week's forecast. |

jmal said: Do you remember when the 250pg short story extra was announced? I can see the combination of both making a substantial impact since the show has kept improving its forecast performance even before the announcement of the extra. It rose when the 250pg short story was announced as an extra, not just the airing of episode five. Combination of the two has been strong. jmal said: Do you also recall when the event ticket was announced? If the event ticket was announced from the very beginning it would not explain the much better performance of Crime Edge compared to other titles over the past week. This on the other hand is purely event ticket, almost surely not reaction to the episodes. Just look at the rankings for vol2 onward. It's going to drop like craaaaaaaazy after 1. |

jmal said: I understand, but I want to see how "neatly" the boost corresponds to the announcement. If the boost happens earlier than the announcement, even 1 day before, but after the airing of an episode, then the boost should be credited to the episode instead. And we have seen sales ranking boost that come only a few days after the airing of an episode, presumably because people only check the show they recorded earlier when they have time, like during the weekend.Pretty sure both were recent, and corresponded neatly with the boosts. Wouldn't bring them up otherwise. |

| I am particularly interested in the case of Crime Edge, because it had been creeping up in sales forecast even before the last week (at least for the case of vol.1), so I am intrigued by how much boost it actually got by the event ticket announcement. |

| For me, the latest episode of Crime Edge has me considering importing it. I was enjoying it before but episode 6 was simply wonderful, especially the end with the return to the original ED Glass no Mikazuki (sung by the seiyuu in character as Iwai) in a full length version. I am not sure that track is available on CD, perhaps it will be on an included CD with the anime? It isn't on the ED CD that is available. But that episode will be on disc #3 which is still ranked in the thousands on amazon.co.jp while as jmal points out, disc 1 with the event ticket is ranked in the top 100. Perhaps episode 6 with the full length version of her song helped with the popularity of Koiwai Kotori, Iwai's seiyuu, which could help to boost the popularity of the event ticket. But she is not well known up to this point, this being only her 4th seiyuu job overall, 2nd as main. Nor is the other main well known though his performance in Tari Tari is something I took note of, he has a similarly short list of roles up to this point, Natsuki Hanae. So who am I missing? Who makes the Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge event ticket a hot item? Yuri*Kari I assume. Cheaper than a usual Yuri*Kari concert? But I'm still confused if this is true as their ED CD single for Crime Edge is not ranked that well on amazon at nearly 1000, don't think it sold well... it came out April 17th and unless I'm mistaken it didn't rank at all. |

| ^ This is one reason why I would like to see when the event ticket was announced. The event ticket may be able to explain the high position of vol.1 compared to other volumes, but depending on the announcement date it may not be able to explain all the upward movement of vol.1 over the past few weeks. And as you said, unlike the big names in the Valvrave event we don't even know who will be in the event, and we know that event does not always boost sales (just look no further than Devil Survivor 2). This is why I am a bit unsure about the view that its performance has everything to do with the event ticket and nothing to do with the episodes. Also, Vol.1 always has CD in the package, but again we don't yet know what will be in the CD. Also, people who love the show because of ep.6 would most likely start from buying vol.1 first and from history we know sales ranking (as well as sales forecast) for later volumes would usually rise after the initial volumes go on sale. So the current low position is not likely to be the full story, even though I would say the gap between vol.1 and vol.2 sales forecast indeed foretells a substantial drop in vol.2 sales. |

| I honestly never would have predicted Attack on Titan to sell so well. I was thinking like 5k tops before this season... it really doesn't seem like the kinda show otaku would rally around. I was wrong though... |

RyanSaotome said: And don't forget a sales that goes beyond 20k would very likely involve not only the anime otaku but other more casual anime fans. This is the case for Madoka, Bake and K-On, and GirlPan involves a lot of casual anime fans as well as military otaku among the buyer of the BD/DVD, while SAO has strong support from fans of the original LN. Shingeki no Kyojin is riding on a big wave of mainstream awareness. Just look at all these twitters with people having fun playing the Titan game. Do these people look like otaku?? http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-16183.htmlI honestly never would have predicted Attack on Titan to sell so well. I was thinking like 5k tops before this season... it really doesn't seem like the kinda show otaku would rally around. I was wrong though... There are two things to note about the Amazon stalker sales prediction for SnK vol.1 though: 1. With the ranking of SnK v1 being so high (always around top three) the forecast is likely to become less accurate. So the prediction can be a substantial overestimate (like Madoka) or underestimate (Evangelion, which is particularly glaring as it stays at #1 for so long). 2. There is a possibility of a substantial drop in sales for vol.2 onwards. Vol.1 has the attraction of having the manga volume zero included as an extra, so its sales could be boosted compared to other volumes. |

| Gogo GirlPan. It's so good to see it beat SAO, and by such a large margin too. |
| I probably regret this post by now. |

| Symbv, how has the reception been for Gargantia Ep 6 in Japan? I'm seeing the same "Its terrible because its all fanservice, dropped" stuff that that I saw for Ep. 5 on MAL and other places, but I wonder if Japan also universally likes this one. |

| To be honest with the reaction SnK getting in Japan I can easily see it doing well over 50k, the manga is also flying off the shelves with every volume selling 60-80k copies last week. |

RyanSaotome said: Oh, there are still people who hates fanservice but still has not dropped the show after ep.5? Symbv, how has the reception been for Gargantia Ep 6 in Japan? I'm seeing the same "Its terrible because its all fanservice, dropped" stuff that that I saw for Ep. 5 on MAL and other places, but I wonder if Japan also universally likes this one. Anyway, after checking over a dozen Japanese forum and blog sites, what I observed is: The reactions are still very positive, although not as lopsided as ep.5 and there is no much mention about how good the directing, pacing or character development is in this ep.6. There are more voices about concerns over the direction of the anime and whether it aims too much at fanservice or sex appeal this time. However, most people seem to be fine with two episodes with heavy SoL/fanservice elements in a row because they have adjusted their expectation by ep4-5 and, more importantly, the conclusion of ep.6 really signifies to viewers, even those who are not that impressed with the SoL/fanservice parade in this episode, that the series is again taking a change in direction to more serious area. A huge amount of attention and discussion is on that last part of the episode, and most people think it is a very good way to conclude this episode, again achieving a good "balance" between SoL, sex appeal, seriousness and story development. As for sakuga/animation, while many give high praises to the animation of the exotic dance scenes, there are also people who think that there are too many close-up cuts and quite a bit of scenes outside of the dance scenes seem to be inferior to the usual quality. They wonder whether the tweet by the director about insufficient sakuga quality before ep.5 was aired in fact means ep.6 instead of ep.5. In terms of Amazon ranking, Gargantia v1 jumped from #33 to #11 within the few hours after the episode 6 was aired (it is at #14 now), not as big as the jump in ep.5 but still very impressive. |
