Paulo27 said: Do you think Midori liked Mochizou too or was Midori just sad/confused about one of her closest friends moving on without her? I could feel tension between Midori and Mochizou but didn't know what to think of it, honestly, glad it didn't turn out to be a love triangle, at least not an obvious one. I do also think Tamako's feeling developed a bit too fast (almost to the point that it seemed like she was just going with the flow and that it just so happened to be Mochizou to confess, obviously them being close friends and all that helped her accept her feelings and I'm not saying any guy would have worked but that's kinda of the impression the movie gave which was probably the only thing I didn't think it got quite right), there should have maybe been some sort of development in the series but you can't have everything I guess. Having watched the Tamako Market TV series (especially Episode 5), I think it's quite apparent that Midori likes Mochizou more than she will ever admit, although she has obvious tensions with him over who is closest to Tamako. I don't think Midori is interested in Mochizou as a guy, though. What we see clearly is that Midori developed a certain feeling towards Tamako (Episode 2) although she seems to be puzzled herself whether that is love with a sensual touch or not (TV series and Movie). We don't know whether Midori is lesbian (she does not really seem interested in other girls that way), or it's just a feeling developed over Tamako in person because of her past tragedy (Tamako's mother's death) and the need to care for Tamako as one of her two closest friends (the other being Mochizou). Yes, I agree with you that Tamako fell in love a bit too easily. But you see, it's Tamako's first love. She had been very blunt about romance as she has been occupied with the family business ever since her mother died (in Episode 4, Anko says Mochizou would be just so happy to help Tamako make mochi, then Tamako says, Eh? Why? to the shock of Anko). She is probably a bit pleased despite being very confused upon hearing Mochizou's confession, as all things turn into bright colors while she runs away from the river bank. Had it been unpleasant, I doubt whether things would appear that way. Then, I think the movie follows a quite slow process of her recognition of growing up to become like her mother, and loving some guy like her mother did. Such scenes like Tamako becoming very conscious of Mochizou (so much that she finds herself looking at him in the classroom), her noticing of love between wives and husbands in the market arcade, and her helping out Anko fit in junor highschool uniform is her being sub-conscious about becoming an adult woman, a mother, and eventually forming a family with someone. When Tamako discovers that it was Mochizou who tried to cheer her up after the funeral of her mother with a "Little Grey" Mochi, and sees that it was him who lead her to the family business of mochi-making, she recognizes that she has fallen in love. Well, all that might be too easy. But you see, from the beginning, the Movie is full of symbols and motifs, of the Earth and the Moon (or the Venus and the Moon), and an Apple falling when the title appears. The movie kicks off with a forward citation of Isaac Newton's word on how he found the Principle of Gravity ("By always thinking unto them"), with the ending song titled Principle, plus a dandelion fluff rising towards the sky into space with Venus (symbol of a woman) ... "They inevitably gravitate towards each other" like S and N magnetic poles, as Kanna says. Some things are just meant to be... |

GohanwaOkazu said: I bet some people have missed the best parts of the film, or the whole plot. When Tamako lost her mother suddenly, it was Mochizo as well as Midori who were beside her. While Mochizo grew to care for Tamako as a boy, Midori developed difficult indescribable emotions towards Tamako (which I would not want anyone to call as lesbianism), as well as sort of rivalry and comradeship with Mochizo over who cares the most for Tamako, their best friend. Tamako had been helping her family's business after her mother died, and always related the warm, white, and nicely scenting mochi with memories of her deceased mother (for whom she still buys a flower for prayers every day). In her subconsciousness, the problems of maturing and motherhood was growing on her. Mochizo was initially almost giving up on confession. But knowing Tamako's past sufferings and after hearing Tamako's memories of and helpless admiration towards her deceased mother, he couldn't help but confess his love out of true compassion. While Tamako is initially very confused, she slowly becomes conscious about maturing and love even by seeing her neighbors. Tamako eventually recognizes how important Mochizo had been after her mother's death. Midori is seemingly the most mature of girls but is actually the one who needs to grow up the most. She is frustrated by her complicated feelings towards Tamako and probably also about her undetermined future (the others have more or less clear visions about what to do after graduation). She breaks the old strangled bond and sets free Tamako (and Mochizo) by encouraging their love partnership as boyfriend and girlfriend, with her little assisting trick. Who informed Midori about Mochizo's short trip (and not his definite farewell) to Tokyo is not shown in the film; it's left as a mystery. I suspect it was Tamako's little sister Anko who really liked Mochizo and Tamako, who knew about their difficult feelings, and who heard and knew what Tamako was planning. I assume it was Anko worrying about the two and seeing Mochizo go off to Tokyo that morning, she informed Midori. Midori after seeing Tamako off running towards her love is broken-hearted as well as feeling satisfied with what she had done. She is not alone, as Kanna her best friend had always known Midori's emotions (see the TV series) and comes to her rescue, telling that Midori looks beautiful after having done what had to be done (that is maturing by letting Tamako go free; poetically shown by the pictures of dandelion flying off). Kanna in turn asks Midori to lend a hand in her growing up; that is her overcoming of fear of heights in order to become a carpenter. Thus, this isn't a simple story of a boy meets girl, but it's about acknowledging love of the family, friends, and good peoples of the neighborhood. It's about overcoming of burdens and maturing. Kiss or no kiss, is unimportant, as we know that Tamako's and Mochizo's story will go on, and the future is implied in the film (the ED of the series and film) which we now know that Mochizo took featuring more confident and intimate looking Tamako. The two shadows side by side colliding in the ED tells their relationship well enough. The phrase used for promotion of the film was "Tamako peeled off" and "About maturing", btw. How to mature and find true love is a difficult issue, but there are hints given in this film. If we are careful, we should recognize the reference to the gravity pull, the Sun and the Moon, the apple, and Isaac Newton, who when asked about how he found the law of universal graviations replied that "By always thinking unto them". This is a well thought-out and very clever film with a good script and superb direction. If you didn't get it, watch again. well said! |

This was superb. Dunno what to say I loved everything. Not much of a comedy as the main series but it has clear "target" from the start and it pulled it off perfectly. Ps> I forgot how much I loved Kanna <3 |

I love the way it ended, it was simply beautiful, i was crying and smiling at the sametime. Mochizou took a little bit of courage to confess to Tamako, eventhough it's awkward at first but in the end his effort pays off, so glad for him, Mochizou and Tamako such a cute couple Too bad Dera didn't get more scenes since the movie is focused on Tamako and Mochizou love story, but it's forgivable because it gives such a serious and heartwarming atmosphere Overall score 9/10, will be missed of course >.< |

A perfect masterpiece on a small scale. Really, I used to think Tamako Market was the most pointless anime KyoAni ever produced, with that of the whole main plot of the show being deemed meaningless in the very last episode, but now I'm glad it existed if it's just because of this movie. |

Much better than the tv series, romance makes everything better. Good story, I so wish there were just 30 more seconds at the end. It was such an agonizing wait for the payoff. 8.5/10 |

Eh it was ok. Basically from the time Mochi confessed, until the time Tamako decided to run to him, it was nothing but melodrama. Those 2 scenes though were superb. Kind of disappointed that there weren't any post credit scenes showing what happened afterwards. Not even an epilogue showing if Mochi decided to not go to Tokyo. Eh overall 7/10 |

Eh overall 7/10 Have you seen the last two shadows during the ED of the movie? That's Tamako resting her head on Mochi's shoulder. You don't have to be dense to know what that meant after she confessed to him. It's not important if Mochi will proceed to go to Tokyo or not. He longed love Tamako and now she confessed to him. He will will not hold back! |

Very cute movie, i have to say that i love Tamako's design, really adorable. Lighthearted and easy-going all the way, ended up smiling for most of the movie. BUT.. the ending was so sudden that it left a bitter taste, 3 more minutes of some aftermath, how about that maybe? The minutes of build-up before the train station scene were great and then i get this lol 7/10 |

it was a really cute ending to an otherwise kind of forgettable series, though id argue it ended too abruptly for its own good, yeah the confess and all but you kind of just leave the whole conflict about him going away to tokyo hanging and how their future will exactly be, yeah you can just infer he'll come back to her after college and all but thats inferring not being actually confirmed and its a hell of alot less satisfying still the romance was quite DAAAWW worthy nonetheless especially after going through a series of seeing mochi get friendzoned |

I cried at the end... not because it was sad but because it ended. :( I want more! More Mochizou, more Tamako, more market district, more Dera too! There's something about Tamako Market that is just so... soft and sweet. This movie is really well done and beautiful. 10/10 Edit: By the way, the synopsis is perfect. "Everybody loves somebody." |

KyoAni at its finest, slice-of-life at its best! First I have to say that all parts of the previous series with Dera were just horrible, I hated how he always destroys the mood with his jokes and this movie was so much much better with him not being around. Graphic and animation was top-notch and the music too. The moment when Tamako put in her mother old casette I just lost it. The clever character writing and plausible spontaneous dialogues just added to this encompassing feeling of emotive love story. The slice-of-life and coming-of-age moments of Tamako's everyday's life were also great. But what's more, it all felt very real. I can imagine many young people could indentify with characters of this movie. While the older ones could see it with sweet enough scent of nostalgia that makes them remember all about their first loves. All-in-all, it's job well done, KyoAni, I alone didn't expected that this movie would move me so much in the end. 9/10 |

I didn't know the movie was a sequel to a TV-series so I was like " what the hell o_O ? " when I saw the opening as the content was too different from the things I expected when reading the description of the anime and seeing the cover. I still think the bird and the prince thing ruins everything and if they appear in the TV-series as well ( and I read somewhere that they do ) then I doubt I'll watch the series. It could have gone good without the bird too. Just my opinion ... I liked the atmosphere of the anime and the place it takes place, also I was tired of shounen anime and wanted to watch a bit of slice-of life/romance anime, so Tamako was a good call. It had everything I wanted. The old man, owner of the cafe shop doesn't talk a lot, but says some nice, good stuff. He's pretty much right and you can see he's experienced. Tamako is your typical dense main character, so in that sense, I'm sorry for Ichizou, but that's life. Glad he makes the move, despite how Tamako is. All in all, it's wasn't a bad anime, I enjoyed it. |

This film does a great job of making you feel sorry for Midori. Anyways, I was really impressed with Love Story. The direction, the focus, the depiction of Tamako's internal struggle, the ending, it was all good. Kanna, Shiori and especially Midori played excellent supporting roles here too and everything from Mochizo's confession to the end was superb. Too bad the film is attached to such a mediocre TV series, it just made caring about anything that happens to these characters that much harder for the movie to do, but it won me over around the confession mark. Could've done without the islanders in this film though, especially in that scene at the end as it disturbed the flow of the climax a little. |

Woah. It only takes like an hour for her to reply to his feelings... Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Boy announces his love. Girl confused. Girl replies. = legit the whole movie. It was so simple and cliched in some areas but still sweet. It seemed like the blonde haired girl had feelings for Mochi, would have liked to have had that explored a bit more. And was hoping to see a better closing scene but what can you doo |

It's interesting that watching just the movie can give the opposite impression, I guess that watching the series first does help appreciate the movie. |

I really really loved this movie. How it wrapped up the series was perfect. Ive seen a lot of people hate on the ending, I thought it was wonderful. "Bam" right to the point, seeing Mochizo's reaction and right to the credits. The rest is up to the watcher/fans. They nailed the connection down with their past as well. Just Mochizo picking on Young Tama. So cute. He handed her the little Mochi as well. While it was a scary moment when the grandfather was hospitalized, there was a part where Tamako looks at Mochizo and just says his name and Mochizo springs into fucking Action. "I'll go with them to the hospital." Like my fucking boy! Then even the father recognizes his manhood as well by him making his own decisions on what to do in life. The father knew all along that Mochizo was in love with Tamako anyway. With him calling him "Father" all the time lol. People love Midori, I have no idea why, I found her to be a bitch at times. Like if you know your love won't come about, why ruin what could be something great? She just had a bitchy vibe the whole series. The only time I cried were at Kanna's part, mainly because I was laughing so hard. Holy shit when she was sliding on the floors in the beginning and making those "sliding" sounds I was done. Then her confession. "I was really happy about what you said. Can you build me a house!" YO I WAS ROLLING haha. Overall great work by Kyoani (no surprise) and one of their best. 10/10 easy. |

Gosh, Tamako literally suffered psychological damage from Mochizou's big reveal... Favourite scene was when she forgot how to say "mochi," that was so cute. The budget was evidently increased but overall the animation quality was quite similar to the series, pacing was pretty normal as was the character development. They didn't really clarify whether Kanna's mini-lecture on magnets resonated with Midori which was a shame. I also particularly liked the plot twist with Mochizou not actually transferring as that would have been overly dramatic. Lastly, it was also lovely how they revolved the movie around Mamedai's song, it's nice how both Tamako's parents, especially her mother helped her take her final step towards accepting her feelings. What I would have preferred was a less open-ending; I was really hoping we'd get a time skip to explain what happened afterwards. I kind of had the impression that Tamako would follow Mochizou to Tokyo and they'd enter the same college although she was just as likely to just stay in Tamaya. A 5 year time skip with Mochizou graduating and returning to meet Tamako would have probably made me tear up (as per Mamedai's request). |

Happy New Year everyone! Not a bad way to start my anime viewing for 2018, with a fairly sweet if not too groundbreaking little sequel for Tamako Market. One that revolves around not a bird but rather finally answering the series' biggest lingering question, the romantic relationship between Tamako and Mochizou. I had meant to get to this much earlier, but better late than never right? I'm left without much to say about this actually. As I already said, it was a cute little love story. Nothing spectacular or particularly original, but a comfy enough watch. With enough little moments and animation flourishes for an enjoyable experience. And kudos to the new couple! Happy they got together, not that there was ever really any doubt. Maybe I'm just a sucker for young love, but I'm feeling generous. 8/10 :D |

8/10. Animation and camera angles were so fluid, well except for Tamako's robotic gag moments, that shit was hilarious. Fluff everywhere, Tamako's too fluff and the Male MC too, just meh for his constant indecisiveness tho. Midori gets alot of hate but yes, she's a wasted character, she can be an mc for another manga tho. The tsundere cells are too strong. I personally believe she got a thing for Mochi, with the way she's acting, but a great wingman for her friend nonetheless. You could tell by her being so happy in the end when she knew her friend got her man. Ending was the worst, got cut in the worst possible time, no timeskip, no hug no kiss Mochi never even had the chance to reply. Sucked ass. P.s the monotone friend was so funny. Glad I never watched the series, this movie alone is enough for me. |
