Lately when I'm on MAL I keep encountering "errors" and the page transforms into a message telling me about this from "Incapsula". Not sure what's going on here? I searched for other threads and only found one that didn't have a conclusion so any information would be appreciated! |

It is basically a more or less new security system turning against you. The same would go for me. It has temporarily blocked my access 3 times now already. |

I had it once as well, says that mal is locked out or something. A sneaky refresh fixed it. |

A smiliar problem here. I would like to edit the css styles, but no matter what I add (even if I edit nothing), it leeds me to Incapsula. I tried different browsers (Chrome, Firefox) and there is no way I can change the apperance of my list. That makes me very sad. What can I do? :( |

You don't even need a third-party software active for the security system to trigger, I can confirm that. |

Pretty much all of the MAL apps are experiencing issues as for the moment. Not only Android ones, iOS as well. I can confirm that's the case for iMAL2. Source for iMAL2's issue can be found on this thread here. |

There was no specific location where this would happen. It was when clicking on My Profile, on a random thread on the Forums, and I think it was when I tried to edit one of my Blogs once. I guess the whole MAL had this system take over, and it triggers for no clear reason(s). |

gameboyja said: Which apps are whitelisted? I haven't been able to use atarashi, malclient, momo mal all for andriod. Trying to update lists crashes the app and momo wont log in. Every creator of a third party app needs to do what is described by Xinil here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=682709 Otherwise it will not work unless Incapsula gets set to more liberal preferences. Since Xinil doesn't answer to those PMs it's unclear of how long it takes to a whitelisting of an app, It took roughly a week for me. Sub said: Edit: However, I'd like to clear something up. Me too: Sub said: I didn't even quote you, I just added info towards the overall discussion. Don't expect everything is focused towards you, because it isn't. You were implicitly referencing to me and it seems I quite hit a nerve again. Since whitelisting doesn't even get rid of the blocks it's only natural that normal users might get the same blocks. Whitelist > normal users. Therefore your post was - as it is often the case in such threads - completely redundant, therefore no help and in worse cases than this irritating for others and has no other purpose than pushing your post counter. You did this before and I called you out on it in a nice way and you got really offensive towards me. I told you as well I won't be as nice the next time. This is the next time. On a side note I'd also appreciate it if you wouldn't post on my profile when you're goal is nothing but provoking and deleting the posts shortly after just 'cause you're unable to handle criticism. Thank you. |

So when it comes to my computer I am fine, but all the apps so far with the iPhone are broken, I have MAL and MAL2 and they both fail to load my list. When I look up app support in the app store, it would normally have brought me to the support section but instead tells me my phone itself is actually blocked by the Incapsula thing mentioned above. Whatever this new security that they have, needs to either be removed or disabled until they fix it. I watch anime from other devices that aren't a computer, and it gets difficult to track my anime counters considering I can't even access the main website from them manually, from wifi or cellular networks. It's hardly logical to need a computer just to update a simple list... |

For iMAL2 in specific, check this thread out, for example. In the 4th post, you can see the reply from the app's creator, stating the (current) status of the issue. |

All Incapsula seems to be actually good at is ticking off regular users. So far it's killed most all 3rd part apps, and as this thread shows, whitelisting is NOT fixing that problem. It's also regularly interrupting people using their browser to try to use the site normally. And its abilities to detect DDoS are pathetic. I have, and have had for years, a nightly cron job that uses curl to pull a copy of my manga and anime lists so I have a copy locally in case I lose net access totally (I also like to have a record of my history that goes back further than 300 entries.) Incapsula is now blocking this, apparently having decided that pulling both lists once every 24 hours means I'm DDoSing the site. (That is, 2 hits every 24 hours = a denial of service attack.) This is an absolute joke. I guess I'll pm xinil asking for a special magic code to bypass this all for a nightly cronjob. I suspect this is a bad use of his time however, but I need my local copy. No wonder he's slow to respond. Right now Incapsula is making a joke of MyAnimeList. You're wasting whatever you're paying them, including if they're providing their "service" for free. Frankly, I don't think the problems can be fixed. Incapsula is a fatally flawed product, there are far, far better security solutions out there. |

No wonder he's slow to respond. That's what I did as well, just for simplicity reasons with file_get_contents and ~42times a week and Incapsula apparently broke it. Just add a unique user agent header like this: curl_setopt($cURLObject, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, $yourUniqueHeader); PM the header to Xinil and play the waiting game. At some point it will work again. It's probably that they block - among a lot of other things - all user agent headers with a "Lynx" in it that a huge amount of cronjobs use. Circumventing it in another way won't be possible since accessing the MAL website will always go through the Incapsula network to avoid DDoS, circumventing would mean getting the IP of MAL and accessing it directly but then there's no DDoS protection anymore. So they will do anything to hide the real IP address of MAL. manabilt said: So far it's killed most all 3rd part apps, and as this thread shows, whitelisting is NOT fixing that problem. When it started working again for me it happened pretty often that Incapsula still blocked my access as well even when my cronjob accessed one site at that time but let through two accesses at another time. Just in the last 72 hours it's okay. Hope that stays as it is now. Maybe it will work in a few days later better for you, too. Guess you should keep an eye on it and on the discussion about the whole matter on MAL. |

Your site is unreachable via Incapsula Symptoms: Any or combination of the following: Your site is unreachable via Incapsula Site visitors experiencing “time out” Site visitors constantly receive an error page when accessing the site Your event log is showing “server is unreachable” Site visitors experience intermittent connectivity issues Background: Upon completion of the DNS changes, as outlined by Incapsula, you are effectively directing all of your traffic via Incapsula’s network of proxy servers (Incapsula proxies). Incapsula proxies access your servers directly, and then serve content to the site visitors. Requests to your servers are therefore all coming from a limited range of Incapsula IP addresses. This may result in being classified as attack traffic by various traffic limiting mechanisms and denying Incapsula from accessing your servers. Possible root cause: Incapsula’s proxies are unable to connect to your servers. Possible reasons: There is a firewall or rate limiting mechanism that is blocking access to your servers. There is a software package installed on your servers that is restricting access (for example: Apache servers have various modules that block requests: mod_deflate, mod_cband, mod_throttle, mod_bwlimited as well as others. The modules are intended to protect the server from high flow of traffic from a single source. |

It's probably that they block - among a lot of other things - all user agent headers with a "Lynx" in it that a huge amount of cronjobs use. I'm using a system call from Perl, but it's simple enough to do there too, but I've killed the cronjobs until I can get a code approved. There's a lot of questions about that, right now though. No one (or nearly no one) is getting a reply. Are the codes being approved? Is Xinil so hopelessly behind that none have been approved? Is the code you picked actually unique and will it need changing? At the moment I'm looking at alternatives (including setting up a macro on a Windows box to just load the pages in Firefox and save the HTML, which should keep Incapsula happy, although I have gotten blocking errors even in Firefox on occasion) and waiting to see what's up before PMing Xinil for a code. At this point in time there seems to be no real point in doing so, as it's not even clear the codes are getting approved and successes aren't just Incapsula randomly letting it work. nantuko said: Circumventing it in another way won't be possible since accessing the MAL website will always go through the Incapsula network to avoid DDoS, circumventing would mean getting the IP of MAL and accessing it directly but then there's no DDoS protection anymore. So they will do anything to hide the real IP address of MAL. I don't know if you directed that at me or not, but please be clear that I'm not trying to circumvent Incapsula. I find the way it's been implemented horridly moronic, the communication about the issue sub-professional (why was the post hidden away in the Unofficial API club? Did Xinil/CraveOline not want it found?) and the Incapsula security settings cranked up to levels that are unacceptable. But I'm not going to try to circumvent it, that would make me a problem. I'll complain and state my opinion about it, and look for alternatives to switch to, but that's it. nantuko said: manabilt said: So far it's killed most all 3rd part apps, and as this thread shows, whitelisting is NOT fixing that problem. For fairness reasons I must say that I luckily had only one minor problem since Tue (incl) in opposite to everyday for abritrary, unreproduceable reasons before. Maybe they slowly, really slowly figure out the way of administrating the Incapsula settings. (haha) It's totally killed all 3rd party apps I use from my main IP address. Apparently the cronjobs has made Incapsula decide that I'm a hacker, and so no 3rd party app on my phone can refresh my lists at all, and yesterday API access for updating lists stopped working as well. To update now I have to turn Wifi off on my phone and use an IP from my cellular company. On my tablet, I have to use my VPN to get a different IP to update. I also started randomly receiving Incapsula "your IP has been blocked by the administrator" errors yesterday. In fact, at first, I thought I had been deliberately blocked for voicing my opinion, but a refresh let me through so apparently it was just Incapsula being stupid. Comcast doesn't bother changing IPs in my neighborhood but a few times a year, so I'm very close to losing access to MAL entirely without resorting to things like my phone via cellular or a VPN. (I'm lucky that I had a VPN for other reasons already.) I shouldn't have to jump through those kinds of hoops just to use a website like it's intended to be used. nantuko said: In addition, giving no information about this prior to setting it up and now having no intention of actually pro-actively solving these occuring problems makes it even worse. Typically MAL.. Yeah, you'd think CraveOnline could afford at least one PR person to inform people of what's going on, and plan things ahead of time. The lack of communication always makes the problems worse. |

I can't see how MAL improved in the last two years, it just keeps getting worse.
