You might know that there is always your usual bunch of elitists that love mecha anime and claim it is objectively the best anime around. But just what is the appeal of mecha? What makes people love mecha so much? In the end, it is usually a dumbed down anime where characters compete to see who has the punkiest giant robot, save a really small number of exceptions such as Code Geass.

I can see the appeal behind Code Geass. The protagonist has a special power, and he is determined to use that power to change the world. The mecha fighting was the worst and most boring part of Code geass IMO, the anime would be better off with some kind of battle suit similar to Starcraft's one.

Anything that mecha has to offer is offered by other anime in higher quality. The animation/art usually tends to be old, lazy and bad. No matter how I see it, there is no reason to hold mecha in a higher regard than other anime, so just why do some people love it so much?

People love it because it's a power fantasy that doesn't rely on the character actually possessing physical strength.
Now you're wondering if there's white text in any of my other posts.

Yeah I don't like mecha at all. I don't like just seeing a bunch of robots fight all the time. The only mecha I have ever watched that were good was guilty crown, code geass, and aldnoah zero.

to me is the dream of piloting a robot, the variable fighter jets on Macross series will not be so appealing if they only are jet fighters so they made those jet fighters transform to robots as well, and robots are fascinating anyway its the dream of mankind to build and perfect them, Transformers movies are sure popular

Mecha is terrible but I do like seeing a protagonist that doesn't just plow through his opponents with sheer strength.

I prefer seeing people with strong robots to seeing just strong people that don't even have the muscles to show it.

It's not necessarily the 'mecha' I just like the battles and the Hardships the pilots face.

And, code geass would of been nothing without the mecha.

Also the poll does suck.

I've never heard/read anyone saying/typing that mecha is the best. Hell, I know a lot of people who would avoid mecha before ecchi.
I'm no mecha fanatic, but I want to give my input here-- some possible reasons.

-Mecha can have a satisfying amount of character development if it works at it. The Mecha often comes with a false sense a protection; inside the cockpit it might seem like a character is invincible for a second, but in the end, we see that a mecha can be cut down just like a human. So why not just have all these characters duke it out? Because while the mecha isn't invincible, the pilot still has a little safety. The pilot might be able to survive another day in a mecha while getting shot outside of a mecha isn't a laughing matter. Anyway, that small bit of protection allows for characters to learn from mistakes, explore their thoughts, and so on.

-Cool mecha designs. Heck yeah.
-Seeing machines brutalized instead of humans (in some cases).
-Often brings a unique form of conflict.

You don't seem to have too much mecha on your list, OP, (dropped, watching, or otherwise). There are some mecha shows which focus more on drama than the mecha and vice-versa. Check some out if you can!

That's all I've got for now. Struggling to keep my eyes open here.;;

The last great mecha anime (IMHO) were The Big O and Gasaraki, which are both over 15 years old now. If you want to see good mecha anime, you have to watch older stuff. It's like saying that you demand to see greatest film noir but refuse to watch anything Hollywood made before 2000, can't be done.
To be fair, a lot of mecha fans I know love Gundam Unicorn a lot and it only ended last year, I've started watching UC Gundam because I absolutely love the OST for Unicorn, its my favorite from any anime.

Yes, I watch it, because I'm a huge fan of sci-fi war storiylines, and that often goes hand in hand with mecha shows in anime. Plus giant robots destroying stuff is fun as hell.

I'm not interested in an obsolete genre that couldn't stand up to the test of time.

"Great" shows should be given the respect of being watched in their prime and left to rest as history.

I don't come a day late to a party and expect the arrangements to be in order as they were when it began. I don't arrive late at a concert and expect the band to start their performance the moment I walk in. I especially don't go to Vanilla Ice concerts post 1990.

What's the appeal of magical girls? Battle-shonen? Harems? Thriller-mysteries?
It's just cuz some people think giant robots are cool
Personal Favorites:

Giant robots being 'cool' is one of the main factors that's agreeable to mecha fans everywhere. However, there are other reasons:[spoiler]
-people like war tragedies/well developed stories and characters

-over-the-top action scenes and animation quality

-THE FUCKIN MUSIC
Mecha has been influential since the beginnings of anime(Astro Boy 1963). It was one of the genres that helped distinguish Japanese animation from any other, while also acting as a major figure of the anime medium.
It's appeal? The Mecha genre contains long-running fans who grew up with these shows and introduced them to their own children. It's that kind of genre that has such a developed community who supports every aspect of it.
In the end it's all personal preference of, "Do you like giant robots?"

The way you wrote your poll choices make you sound extremely condescending and making it look like you hate the genre. Of course you confirmed that in your post. Anyway to answer the question it is because I love science fiction and technology, so a genre which relates to that is appealing and interesting for me.

Next time try to learn how to write topics better so you won't look like an asshat. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's bad, kid.
