Probably the answer could seem predictable but perhaps it's not. During these years I've been a manga fan, I've got to know many yaoi fans (girls) and most of them during their lives have had homosexual relationships soon after discovering yaoi. I don't think yaoi manga can actually change one's sexuality, but it is an odd coincidence that so many yaoi fans declared themselves bi/homosexual/sexually confused. So, what do you think about it? |

No. I don't think being exposed to homosexually themed media can turn one's sexuality but that's just me. It may make you more accepting/aware of the sexuality but not turn. That's my opinion anyway. |

If someone watches it and decides that they are homosexual. well they were likely already having these thoughts and feelings and thats what led to them watching the show in the first place. And during the show they became more accepting of it within themselves and realized how they felt. |

But well it's Japan... what do they think I don't even try to guess. Hehe. :D Well, I can only share my personal experience on the matter, even if it's a tiny bit off topic. I don't watch Yaoi (I tried once and I couldn't stand the soap, drama and the rapishness) but I do watch all kinds of porn. When I started watching porn, I started with gay men porn for the simple reason that as a straight girl, seeing a zoom over a pussy would just make me go "ewwww". :D Then, I switched to straight porn because I did miss boobs groping and also I got tired pretty quickly of sodomy. But then, in most straight porn I'd watch, there were rarely foreplays and tenderness. >.> Which matters to me, d'uh! :D So I switched for a while to lesbian porn as tis often more about kisses and fondling. But then I started to miss.. heh, men. ^^ So I fiiiiiinally went back to straight porn WITH tenderness (whoohoo, it exists!). So, in the end, it was never a matter of attraction towards men or women, but just looking for something I couldn't find elsewhere. :D Now, I realise it may be different for Yaoi, I dunno. But as you said, I doubt watching two people being this or that can change your sexuality. As for why they watch those anime, I think we already have a very lively topic about it. XD |

Currently most popular version is genetic but than it doesn't explain switches from one identity to other or fact that it's rather continuum than just those 4 identities (hereto- homo- bi- asexual). Liloute said: INow, I realise it may be different for Yaoi, I dunno. But as you said, I doubt watching two people being this or that can change your sexuality. XD It reminds me of my master thesis :D but there I was counting how much of porn of each type is there and who is watching what. It looked quite nice in paper :D For yaoi my working theory is: if girls want to see gorgeous boys than why not give them two or more of them?! Plus they often some of them act in a bit girly (yea stereotype) way so they can relate to it. Most viewers of them are hetero... for some it may be a way to discover something about themselves (but this is much more probable in case of yuri). |

Liloute said: It's like saying that men who fap at lesbo porn will turn gay. O_o I actually think that's not true. I mean... I don't think men who watch lesbo porn care about the sentimental side of the movie (if it has such a side, and I'm doubtful about it), while I think most girls, reading yaoi, are interested not only in the "porn" parts but also in the romantic scenes. If they don't care about the sentimental part of the manga, then they should whatch a gay porn instead. When I read a BL manga I focus more on the romantic scenes, on feelings and emotions. In order to enjoy a BL manga the reader has to identify himself with one of the main characters, and maybe it's because of this that even a het person can see love from a different point of view. Reading a BL, perhaps a good one and not a PWP/stupid/plotless one, can open one's mind. And from here I completely agree with this: Praxiii said: If someone watches it and decides that they are homosexual. well they were likely already having these thoughts and feelings and thats what led to them watching the show in the first place. And during the show they became more accepting of it within themselves and realized how they felt. |

i don't see how any medium of entertainment shifts your sexuality. I personally believe if your gay or bi and don't know it yet you may discover it because of of such a form of entertainment. I wouldn't say it influences you, but maybe it allows you to realize it.I'm straight so i can't really say for sure. |

I don't think so. It perhaps can change your view to homosexuality (and perhaps, fetish?), but not changing your sexuality. Repeating what peoples here said, if someone straight but ends up gay or lesbian, big chance they are bisexual but didn't realize it beforehand and they came to it since their view has changed and they accept their sexuality more. :) |

99.99% of the yaoi fangirls are straight women. The only reason they watched and read yaoi just because they want to see two or more penises plus hot feminine-looking faces. They don't care how badly written the plots of yaoi mangas they craved. |

Let me say this out loud: yaoi is nothing but an exploitation of gay men by and for straight women. Of course all they want to see are hot bishies with even hotter, well-drawn penises, something lesbian women will not going to see unless they are anime/manga connoisseur. |

Influence? Absolutely. Spending significant time ingesting and thinking about a particular sexual theme undoubtedly will influence you and your tastes…but if you’re not already inclined towards it (whether conscious or not), I don’t think exposure will change you. |

NK_500 said: Let me say this out loud: yaoi is nothing but an exploitation of gay men by and for straight women. lol "exploitation". Just like how every other form of porn exploits women, right? Hell, the ones who doesn't exploit women aren't exactly directed towards women either. (irl) Lesbian porn is usually directed towards straight men, straight porn is always directed towards straight men, and gay porn is directed towards gay men. If yaoi is the only little sub-category of porn directed towards women then I don't fucking understand why so many white straight men people complain so much. And to stay on topic; no, reading yaoi won't normally change a persons sexuality. It just doesn't work like that. |

@holypoop: Who else read yaoi manga besides straight women? Sure some gay men read it too but I'm talking about the minority. In fact yaoi had evolved(if such word can be used) to avoid itself getting too similar with "bara", gay manga which authored and marketed for gay men rather than women. |

While I don't think yaoi will affect a person's sexuality, I think it has the potential (however small) to make someone unhappy with their own gender. For instance over time they may find the idea of being the dominant male more appealing than being the one getting pounded. And I'm not just pulling this out of my ass, I used to be friends with a girl who read a lot of yaoi, and she eventually told me she wanted to be a man for that very reason. And she wasn't just some crazy obsessive fangirl either, over time she just found the idea of sex as a man more appealing. Whether or not she would have come to the same conclusion had she not read yaoi at all, I don't really know. |

Actually, I know four lesbians who all read yaoi. :3 As for the question itself though, I think it increases the likelihood that straight girls will want to claim bisexuality/be genuinely a little more confused about whether they are or not, but of course it won't actually change their sexual orientation. That's just... stupid, to be blunt. That's like saying watching hetero porn will make gay people less gay. *rolls eyes* |

Not really, me and my cousin (both girls) read Yaoi all the time, but we don't really care for boys love outside of a manga or anime (but I do have gay friends.. and I dont got a problem with their smexuality, I just dont get jumpy over the idea of them having man-smex :D) But with BL manga.... You wont go gay unless you were bi a little to begin with. Even if youre a male and reading yaoi as a straight person even if it turns you on it doesnt usually translate into reality so its more like a fetish. |

How can anyone think this is even the case oO? I'm not usually into the whole yaoi/yuri genres or anything but I've read mangas of both and I'm perfectly straight, as well as having experimented as well with another girl, still straight. I don't think there is anything that can change someone's sexuality at all, if I see a woman who I think is sexy, it doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to turn into a lesbian D: |

If you go ahead and have a sexual relationship with another woman (and not just the "lets experiment") kind and then have a romantic relationship, than shes bisexual. A physical attraction isn't enough on it's own. |

I have a guy friend that is getting more and more interested in yaoi (partly because of my influence?) and one day he messaged me he was afraid of turning gay cos of yaoi and that he was getting turned on looking at all the smex. I wanted to explain to him that getting turned on by 2D yaoi doesn't necessarily make him gay, but I do read yuri sometimes (I'm a girl) and I feel it's somewhat opening my mind to realizing that the fact that it's not totally impossible to have your heart beating faster at seeing a person of the same sex sometimes. (I consider myself straight, mostly) So I was afraid that if he was feeling this way too, how can I say to him yaoi won't turn him gay? I guess I've seen/ read a lot of things compared to him to understand these conflicting emotions. If I explain to him, I'm sure he'll just say he doesn't understand what I mean. XD |

I've actually stumbled upon some yaoi manga by accident recently. Pretty new to manga so just went for some with high rating. Personally I've enjoyed them more than I thought I would when I realised that the main characters were gay. Some of the not so detailed man on man scenes didn't creep me out either. I haven't read a lot of them, but the ones I have read had pretty feminine looking characters and if the artist had put some breasts on some of them you wouldn't have noticed that it was supposed to be a guy. I don't think I'm homosexual just because I'm able to enjoy yaoi mangas though, not that i would care if I'd turn out to be gay. |

I think yaoi might 'help' people realize their sexuality, but not really influence it. I believe that we define our sexuality at an early age, but we become aware of it much later...I know people who discovered their sexuality (whether it be homo or hetero) at a late age (one of them realized he actually likes men when he was around 35). I myself read yaoi, although I'm attracted to women (I also read yuri of course), but my two friends who read yaoi (and yes, they are genuine fangirls, which is irritating sometimes, when they sequel over some cute character) , like it because ''of the pretty bishounen-s'', and although they have nothing against homosexuality, I am pretty sure they do not have any homosexual 'tendencies' (or if they do they do not show it). |

Reading the stuff didn't make me gay though. I'm still straight. The way i see it, most Yaoi is drawn by women intended for women who, perhaps not necessarily gay themselves, but just think the Yaoi is hot (or something like that), while Yuri is for men. Granted some gay people probably read these as well because it pertains to them, but the stuff is mainly marketed to those straight who want to see their favorite gender get it on in an otherwise impossible situation (because most Yaoi with plot and drama has male characters who act like flowers). Again, it's mainly drawn by women for women, not for gay couples, so i don't see it changing someone's sexuality. I can see someone realizing their sexuality if perhaps they were male and read Yaoi, but not the other way around. I'm sure there are rare cases, but for the majority i doubt this is the case. |

Yaoi has no connection with the sexuality of the people who read it. Neither have yuri or hentai. These are just anime, that's all. There are, however, people who are too into anime and end up forgetting all those characters are only 2D, sigh. As a yaoi fan, you must think I'm crazy and a social awkward person for reading anything of this genre. OK, maybe not all of you think like that, but most people do. To the question: "Why, for the sake of your sanity, do you read yaoi?" I would not have an answer. I just read it like any other manga around. Yuri, yaoi and hentai aren't only for men, women and men. Anyone could read the three genres and love them to bits. There are better yuri stories out there, than yaoi. This is a good thing for, obviously, yuri fans (count me in), but not for yaoi ones (count me in, as well). I just wish that yaoi would evolve as much as yuri does. Is it that hard to come up with a completely different approach to BL? I have thought about my sexuality long before finding out about yuri and yaoi. You could say that I'm still in the state of 'undecided' and I like it this way. It's much better than thinking too much upon it, since, in the end, it doesn't matter at all to me. |

For some girls, I guess it does. This could be an interesting Psychology project for someone. The character in in this kind of manga come in two flavors, a masculine pushy guy and a feminine submissive one, even the masculine one has shades of femininity, after all, the authors are women and the drawing style is delicate and feminine, getting into a "male" mind state in that condition must be really hard. Those kind of things can blur the line of sexes if exposed to them enough. Of course, this would have as a prerequisite for the reader to consider the characters believable, and probably to have some sexual thoughts about the theme, to not make a too big separation between the story and reality. A quick psychology theory so don't take it too seriously. |
