| This thread makes me think of an old article I read about this reddit thread where rapists would explain themselves (all posts in the thread have been deleted since, but there are quotations in the article so I linked it instead). Regardless of what the point of the article was, I think it's a good thing to hear what the ones who commited the crime have to say on the matter, as it would be a way for us to gain a better understanding of the circumstances in which a majority of those rapes happen and what measures could be taken to prevent these situations from occuring. I have nothing against teaching women to protect themselves: if pepper spray, mini-knifes or self defense (and even 'rape whistle' for that matter, as ridiculous as I think it is) can save even one person from being assaulted, then it's a good thing. However, the problem I have with this is that concentrating all our efforts on what women could do to avoid being raped in a 'violent stranger in the dark alley' type of scenario completely shifts the focus away from the other scenarii in which rape occurs, and which constitute a majority of them. Reading more about all those men (and women) who raped a non-stranger and try and find out why and how things turned out the way they did is a step in good direction, imo. Cause I'm pretty sure most of the guys who posted on the reddit thread were perfectly aware that rape is unacceptable and I can assume with confidence most of them wouldn't go as far as attacking a stranger in the street and assault them. The problem resides in where to draw the line and when you disregard your partner's (in this case, the woman's) sexuality and needs and prioritize or establish your owns as more important (if that makes sense). |
