I like turn-based ones better because you have time to be a strategist and think. But what do you guys think?

Bit of both.

I'm an admirer of the system used in the original Dragon Age game.

Pause the combat, take stock, issue orders to team members etc

Before resuming

I would prefer an action RPG in real-time but sometimes if you're commanding a group, turn-based is the only way to make you feel like you're actually commanding them without feeling things are going too fast all at once.

Turn Based as it allows more strategy.

I suggest adding a poll to the thread.

Dragon age: origins did it the right way.

As did baldur's gate1 and 2, an amazing older bioware game.

The enhanced editions are freaking awesome.

Both, to put it plainly. I like watching and taking part of a battle that's happening in real time for more of an "adrenaline rush" and every once in a while doing some turn based, as long as it doesn't get too repetitive (agarest generations of war comes to mind).

Real-time is usually executed badly, and turn-based can get pretty tedious in the long run. They both have flaws, but I like both.

Dragon age is the best of both worlds really.

Set up the pre-determined strategical actions in the menu before the battle, and play in real time pausing if needed.

I don't remember the last turn based RPG game that actually required any strategy and had me do nothing but spam my strongest hits.

I prefer real time. I don't mind if they're encounter based games (Star Ocean, Tales of, etc) or just free roam/dungeon style games (Dark Cloud, Kingdom Hearts, etc).

Ahh, this is difficult! I grew up with the traditional turn-based RPG games like Final Fantasy and Pokemon. I still love those games and I've never gotten tired of that turn-based formula.

However, recently I've been really enjoying real-time RPG games like Star Ocean and Shining Force.

I prefer a combination of both styles. For example, RPG-like games that give you on option to battle turn-based RPG but with an active battle system as well.

Real time. Tales of is my favorite franchise and the Game Play is amazing, for the most part. Star Ocean did it well too. I don't mind turn based though, considering Xenosaga is my favorite game.

We should properly address the differences first:

Turn based - Player team and enemy team takes turns to act, the action is done instantly.
Example: Disgaea, Final Fantasy III, Ar Tonelico I & II

Turn based per unit - Each unit takes turns to act depend on their speed.
Example: Hoshigami, Final Fantasy VII (ATB mode)

Tactical Turn Based - Similar to Turn Based per unit, but command issued first then it takes time to execute, player can cancel the command halfway.
Example: Growlanser, Grandia I

Tactical Real-time - Battle is done in real time but player can pause it and issue command.
Example: Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy XII, Star Ocean, Dragon Age Origins

Real-time battle - Battle entirely real time.
Example: Shining Force Neo & EXA, Ys, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Legend of Mana

For me, I personally choose tactical turn based and tactical real time, it gave more control of the situation while not being hindered by the pace of the combat.

You should play Persona.

OT:
I like real-time system like the Tales of series, or Dragon's Dogma. But I loved the mix FFXIII had with real-time and turn based, I have to say FFXIII's system is my favorite of all times.

I like both. I can adjust to either. I've noticed that some people like turn based because they don't have quick reflexes and some like real time because they can play better than have much better skill/aiming.

I prefer turn-based for both standard RPG and strategy RPGs, but if it is something like Fallout 3 then turn-based obviously doesn't work (^_^)

To be honest either.
Aslong as the story and the functions are strong.
Story has to be interesting and must capture your attention.
Action needs to be logical and quick. (Alot of turn base use simple, Attack, Magic, item, Defend choices, which is simple).

Real time. It is much more intuitive and usually allows for a far greater range of approaches to combat.

Turn based is indeed great for tactics and strategy, but most RPGs hardly contain any of this. I've only played some few games, Like the SMT series, where battle tactics actually matters most of the time. Beyond that, most games tend have particular bosses where you might benefit from a strategic approach, but the majority of battles inevitably turn into mindless button mashing, which is a complete waste of a turn based battle system.

It's more fun for me to have to make up a quick strat on the fly in real time and I feel like that adds more pressure on the player.

Yea, I'm sure there are others I haven't played that requires strategy/tactics.

IMO, biggest problem with classic turn based battles in RPGs is exactly that it gives player time to think about next move, until s/he finds a pattern in enemy's "movement".
After that it's just about using strong enough skills, and healing, if necessary, which often gets boring.

If you ask me, even if games should be relaxing, they should also put some pressure on player, simply to be more exciting.

That's why these days I prefer action based things, where you actually have feeling of playing the game, not just inputting commands.

As for the enemies, them having the massive amount of HP doesn't help, it just unnecessary prolongs the battles.

Probably turn-based because usually those have a MUCH more in-depth combat system with layers of strategy. Most real-time combat systems just consist of clicking until enemy=dead.
