One Piece Movie 02: Nejimaki-jima no Daibouken

I was considerably delighted to find that the second movie of One Piece had a more creative plot than the first. Stepping right into the film, the audience is immediately thrown into a humourous situation: the Straw Hats have lost their ship, and are without a change of clothes. Enter, stage right, the crew in wedding attire. No, seriously. Apparently that was the only clothing rental shop open. (REALLY guys? Really?)

So the story picks up from there, going into the traditional method of laying out movie plots: enter, stage left, side characters. And what do you know, they may have an idea of who the ... villains of the show might be. How coincidental. They're a loud, self-important group, which clearly contrast with the Straw Hats and make for some amusing banter. I really liked the movie characters in this, really. They've got memorable personalities, nothing that just fades into the background after watching them.

The movie continues with a light, humourous theme, and we're introduced to the island of the day with a bit of camera work: it's this giant Clockwork Tower, what do you know. I adored it. Thought it was really interesting. I mean, the crew hasn't come across many giant towers of islands before, have they? It's something that's more unique to this movie. So the landscape and setting of the incoming battles, you can tell, are going to be a bit different from normal and just plain interesting.

The villain was also highly amusing, what with his fascination and crush on Nami in a wedding dress, who was not in the least bit happy with the enemy taking a liking to her. But of course, Nami, being manipulative that she is, sought to use this against him. So Nami's role in this movie was just great.

All the other members of the crew, acting out their roles as suave and cool and determined fighters, are what mostly made this entertaining for me. Because you just know that the villains are going to assume that they're the toughest, greatest, most brilliant men and women that ever existed; oh what you've come to defeat me? Let me tell you how great I am—

Ass-kicking commenced from there on, of course.

They put up a good fight though, which further entertained me. Some interesting battle tactics and teamwork later, the Straw Hats managed to come out on top, but the villains were tougher than expected. I guess they had a reason to be obnoxiously cheeky. Not that that made them worthy of being defeated by our heroes.

All right, I'll stop mocking the villains.

At any rate, I much preferred this plot over the plot of the first movie, so if you saw this first one and were disappointed or concerned that the other movies wouldn't cut it, I would definitely try at least watching this one before you call it quits. Creativity and character motivation and back story and so much more were all improved from movie one. So don't despair.

Let me try this line to get you to see it: the villain attempts to crush Luffy with the slow and heavy downward force of a ceiling. That's action for you. No, wait a minute. Scratch that. There's Nami in a wedding dress. Yes?

One Piece movie 2 was a fun-filled adventure with a memorable cast of new characters.

There were countless pieces of music which enriched this film and the anime episodes which followed.

The animation had lots of highlights and the shading was akin to episodes such as 312 and 474.

The composition was rather impressive too....

This is truly one of the most underrated One Piece movies despite only being the successor of One Piece 2000.

This is the second One Piece movie, theoretically taking place after Sanji joins the crew and before they go to Drunken Drum Island. Just like all movies, it is a filler mission with a good budget and a simplistic plot. The story is just about the Strawhat Pirates trying to save a kidnapped Nami and their stolen ship from an evil pirate crew. Along the way they also need to stop them before they complete their super weapon. And as usual there is a kid asking for their help …

Although not as far fetched as the previous movie, it still abuses the notion of making ... a super weapon out of a machine island. I mean they make it look so hard just to find the knowledge to build one from ancient manuscripts and they just do it with normal established technology? And where the heck is the navy to take advantage or protect this place? But hey, since when do filler movies try to be consistent?

As usual, Oda takes ideas even from these movies into the canon story later on, so later on you actually get a very similar case where Nami is kidnapped and is dressed as a bride to be forcefully married to some creep. There even is a mechanical island where they build all sorts of weird super weapons.

Anyways, as far as a movie goes, both action and plot are a bit more exciting than that of the previous movie for having more secondary battles (there are four mini-bosses instead of one) and the whole super weapon plan feels more epic than just looking for hidden treasure. Of course the whole thing is still quite simple since after their initial defeat by being unprepared, the good guys go to the offence and own everything. There is also that damn fuss with the kid asking the heroes to help out. They tried to make it look a bit tragic by having the population unwilling to resist the bad guys for not wasting all the years they spent on making the device. Yet all the resolution to this issue was just Luffy trashing everything and saying “There, I ruined your life’s work, so stop complaining and start from scratch.” Very weak I must say; normal people would flip if you do that to them.

So you will just watch this for the action scenes, which are not bad at all. They are more in numbers than in the first movie and since the enemies are all devil fruit users that use booby traps and sneak attacks which makes them have a lot more fancy powers. Plus, they have a motif around card symbols and gambling, so there is a vague identity trait here that follows a pattern. There is even a minor character that has a grudge against Zoro for an earlier defeat to build up some cheap excitement. As for the big boss, Bear King seemed to be undefeatable until he used the super weapon on Luffy. Just for no reason than ending the battle, Luffy manages to reflect back a bullet three times his size and wins the day. I didn’t like how he won with no real strategy other than having infinite stamina and reflecting what was supposed to be beyond human capabilities. Cheap!

In all, it is quite the passable movie. The action is cool but it all ends in a convenient way.

Oh and don’t miss the special short that comes with the movie. “Jango's Dance Carnival” may only be 5 minutes long but has an awesome song and choreography.

One Piece Movie 2: Nejimaki Jima no Daibouken Review

Story (5/10) Average

The story for the second One Piece movie was as the plot starts off weird and they introduce you to this Clockwork Island which is has and interesting design. The starting plot introduces you to two movie characters Akisu and Borodo which I guess are suppose to be a resemblance to Luffy and Shanks as far as relationship. Anyway the movie tries to give you their story while turning into a "Save Nami" plot also as she capture by the enemies of the movie and the crew has to go save her. For an anime ... movie the plot sounds fine for a movie but I thought the execution was a tad bit lack luster. The execution on many many occasions has so my inconsistencies that threw me out of the movie. To name a few Zoro being poison but still able to beat his enemy, Sanji hurting hit foot at the beginning by a small spiky ball but being able to kick the entire enemy he was fighting who was moving fast and more aggressive at hit why because he was where his shoes this time? The multiple of para shoots coming out of now where for when Akisu get's shoot and blown out the window (which idk how he ended up hanging from the pole when the direction of the blast he got knocked out of just didn't make sense) or the hundreds of other para-shoots that every other character plus the ship has at the ending. Too many "wtf why?" moments threw me out of the movie.


Art and Animation (6/10) Fine

Firstly for an anime movie I'm disappointed on how this one looks as it looks like an average episode pulled from the hundred plus episode anime. The first movie has a nice smooth 90s feel to the art style and animation but this one just looks average there were a few scenes that stood out (like when that water lady was first introduced) which is why I'll give it a 6 but now more than that. It's a step down from the first movie which only came out a year before this one.


Sound (7/10) Good

Voice Acting is good nothing really to be said about this section it's good nothing stood out that would make me feel it was anything higher than that.

Characters (8/10) Very Good

The pirate crew is here again still being their old selves and though they are entertaining like always the other character of this movie like Akisu and Borodo weren't. And even though in the last movie I gave this section a 9 this one get's an 8 because, the many inconsistencies of this movie all together. Example where's one that I didn't understand and was never explained, why at the start of the movie is the straw hat crew wearing different clothes? At the very very beginning when they were all of the beach they were fine but when their Ship gets stolen Nami and Sanji are wearing wedding clothes and Zoro and Ussop are in these Edo period outfits. WHY? It's like the only reason they did this was for the sake of having them wear different clothes because it's a movie. It bothered me I under stand usually in movies this happens it usually doesn't get under my skin but it did this time.

Enjoyment (6/10) Fine

Usually my enjoyment when it comes to watching anime movies is for the art style and animation that is put behind it because it usually has the budget for it. But when you take that away from it, this movie is lower than the first in my opinion. It wasn't bad because at least the pirate crew had more shine in this one versus the first, the inclusion of Sanji and the enemies where kinda cool, the execution of everything when put together fell short when it comes to being better than the first movie when didn't really set the bar that high yet this movie couldn't even reach it.

This movie was all over the place although it wasn't bad it was enjoyable to SUM extent but the execution, inconsistencies, bland art style and animation for an anime movie are the main things that made me feel this movie couldn't even reach a 7 in my book it was a fine movie though but nothing more than that.

Well, I'm watching one piece and I'm episode almost 600, but I watched this movie and still enjoyed it.
The story was well made, action all over the movie unlike some other movies (will not tell name). Rich story with nice characters, the bad guys, and the ones who team up with mugiwara no ichimi.
The characters are from Zoro till Sanji (before the grand line).
The art was "fair" but it is because it was released in 2001 .
Sound: one piece soundtrack, quite enjoyable, like always.
The movie is 55 minutes so you won't have a lot shitty talks (this is ... the thing I hate the most at anime).

Wow still not enough.

Okay for real though, the colors were mostly drab, the advertised new outfits got switched for new ones in like 5 minutes, the antagonist was a boring idiot who got beat by "gotta get angry mode luffy". There was no tension, the temporary friends weren't interesting and the stuff that was almost good about them was rushed and poorly expanded on. The antagonists minions all sucked. So much. They were all tropes. The vampire dude was kinda fun looking, but his joke got old real fucking quick.

Music was aight.

It was to my enormous delight to find that this One Piece movie was far more interesting and engaging then the first movie; instead of basic treasure hunting we get at least some form of a plot, along with hilarious visual gags and enemies who are actually a threat.

Of course, the story is pretty basic fare. Set some time after the Arlong Arc, The Merry Going, along with Nami, have been stolen, and the remnants of the Straw Hat Pirates, garbed only in wedding gear, are off to rescue them. While this seems hilarious on paper (and it is), they don't really continue the wedding ... clothes gag for ages.

My major issue with the story is how much they make the Straw Hat Pirates (sans Luffy) seem weak when they don't have their equipment; I mean, it makes sense, but I think that considering the power levels of at least Sanji and Zoro, they'd be able to manage at least somewhat without their equipment!

The art and animation is pretty standard One Piece fare, the animation having a bump due to the movie setting; I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love One Piece's art, and it's character design. They are freaking gorgeous. Along with this, the characters aren't really any different, so I'm perfectly content to see Sanji fawn over women any day.

All in all, the second One Piece movie may not be a masterpiece by any stretch of the word, but it's a fun extended romp in the One Piece universe and sans a few story problem, it's simply just a huge ton of fun.

A very average film that has just enough going for it to make it enjoyable, albeit not enough for it to be particularly recommendable, even for One Piece fans as the series itself has a lot more going for it.

Similarily to the first film, the emotional weight is carried by a couple of side characters. Akisu and Boroudo have a relationship that is just strong enough and are developed just enough to be likable, albeit not as much as in the first film. In fact, if the movie were to focus more on these two and the environment of the island itself, I think it ... could have been a lot better. I also like that the Akisu's obligatory similarities to Luffy's backstory aren't spelled out through dialogue, but rather conveyed through Luffy's facial expressions and some very short flashbacks that also go to explain Luffy's anger and adrenaline rushes when Akisu is attacked. While not original in any, it's a bit more subtle than you usually see in this genre.

But besides this, the film mostly follows the usual formula of the gang fighting their way through different enemies, each with their own personality, and in that area, the film is fine, nothing more and nothing less. Each of the Straw Hat Pirates getting captured one after another could have been a bit interesting if it actually went anywhere, but instead all that comes of it is that Luffy frees them, and so they're suddenly able to beat each of their respective foes even though little has changed.

The bad guys themselves are also pretty boring, (though their last name has aged in a strange way). Their fighting techniques are somewhat creative with some new devil fruits being involved as is usual, but they don't really do much with them. They all kind of stop at the very basic ideas of how they work. There were some possibilities with Nami beating everyone and trying to manipulate the boss by pretending that she wants to marry him, but again, it never goes anywhere.

As for the animation, it has some decent motion, but really lacks in impact when it comes to the action, so the fights aren't all that exciting. Something the film does have going for it, is some pretty good comedic timing, and the beginning is decently funny with the Straw Hat Pirates getting their ship stolen while their relaxing at the sea and have to go after it in a tiny swan-shaped boat wearing clothes they got from a rental store for wedding attires as that was the only place that was open at the time. Most of the jokes are pretty standard, but they do get a chuckle once in a while.

This film isn't very interesting, but it's alright for what it is. Like the first one, it keeps itself short, and as such doesn't overstay its welcome or feel like too much of a waste of time. I probably won't watch it again, but I don't regret watching it either.

If I'm taking the Naruto movies as a baseline, which is my wont to do, this is more shaped like a movie than those were. It even has a few set-ups and pay-offs beyond the movie-original character's "secret" backstory, or whatever.

I'm also a fan of the slimmed-down, back-to-basics feel of anything from the East Blue era. (You can extend that to Chopper, too.) One Piece unfolds like a grand strategy over hundreds of chapters with a hundred characters, but there's just something to be said for how the core-est of the core group of characters worked so well together right from the start.

This movie is ... completely average, otherwise. The villains have a little flair, but not enough to share between themselves. This 60 minutes sure felt like 120.

I'll say this, though.

It IS worth it, kinda.

One Piece Movie 2 Review

On this movie, additional crew has already been introduced, Sanji. The movie set up is on an island called Clockwork. With their ship getting stolen, they found their way on that island to have it back and found themselves in the midst of fight with Bear King. Well, another weak gorilla looking guy who only knows how to talk. Due to their traps and setups, most of the crews will be badly hurt, but that won't hinder them to fight.

The same with the first movie, the animation of this one is not that great. But still, the action and how ... the story evolves is a great one. It'll will show how deep a person can care for one another, regardless of blood. If the first movie is about friendship of two men, this movie is about treating one as a family and how much are you willing to give them what they deserve to have.

Okay Nami in a wedding dress while also wearing Luffy's straw hat is a figurine I NEED.

Also Zoro totally pulled a Thanos. Can't remember the exact quote so I'll put in Marvel's
"You ruined my life!" "I don't even know who you are" ;)

I can't wait till Nami starts kicking BUTT. The Damsel in distress thing isn't up my alley but Sanji was HILARIOUS the whole time of course. & the woman reallllllly had a thing for Nami it seemed at first??

Also, look at Nami defeating her by trapping her in a jar, just wow. haha. I'm surprised she couldn't get out after ... that.

At the end of the day I think you just have to enjoy One Piece for what it is and not nitpick at it tho.
This one was alot of fun and better than the first movie for sure.

This is a stupid review.

First because i never watched even one episode of One Piece, i just wanted to understand more or less what is One Piece without taking much spoilers.

The story: was very basic but in my opinion for a movie was pretty good.

Art: God damm i love this art style and the way they animate the funny faces, is with so much love and in such an artistic way. I am trully impressed with OP art.

Sound: to be honest nothing memorable...

Characteres: all the crew was very funny but in this movie the characters that i liked the most ware the "bros" such a ... good emotional connection this movie had the capability of creating in only 50 minutes. Epic

Enjoyment: Sometimes i got kinda bored, other times i got hyped. It was good but far from a movie that makes me wanna re-watch it.

Overall: 6/10

This one was okay but felt even more skippable than the last, to be honest. I'm not really a big fan of the kinds of movies that throw you right in with no set-up whatsoever. (I don't know, if I was able to steal a crew's ship that easily, I wouldn't have any great hope that they'd then be able to overthrow the tyrant rulers I was manipulating them towards... It would have been a bit more palatable if they'd caught Borodo in the act or something and then only ended up going to the island anyway because the bad guys succeeded in kidnapping Nami. ... But that's just one idea.)

The action was fine. It was cool to see Usopp get to play a part in the fighting this time too. But I wasn't particularly moved by the story. And the movie as a whole wasn't extra fun to compensate for that, which is kind of what I look for when trying to redeem a filler movie.

The only really noteworthy thing was the setting. It was a very cool island, but even that aspect doesn't exactly get points for originality or anything. I think every long-running series has gone for that Castle in the Sky aesthetic at some point.

The movie is a breath of fresh air compared to the first one which was dookie, but this was actually omega fun to watch. But the abilities of the enemies compared to the strawhats were too good but ofc zoro can rip off a stone floor and sanjis foot can be chilling after going through spikes LMAO if not for the bs the strawhats pulled i'd say 10/10 but because of that, 9/1. Cool side characters and i cared for them.
Art style was so good compared to the anime, reminded me of stuff like evangelion aka my favorite anime, animation was really nice ... too and pleasing to look at
Storyline was also nice and well paced, wasnt too predictable either
