Synopsis

Eternal Family is the most popular reality show in the world, where five societal dropouts live together with an actor. From people with eccentric personalities or sordid pasts to abandoned children, these displaced individuals were implanted with false memories to believe the six of them formed a family. While their memories have been overwritten, the characteristics that made them outcasts of society remain, fueling an incredibly chaotic lifestyle. But when an accident leads to the breakdown of the facility detaining them, the family becomes loose on the streets. Now that they have a taste of the outside world, returning to their captivity may be an impossible feat.

this little chunk of stuff was so full of masterful storytelling on multiple levels. really interesting music/sound design, the animation was simple and well done, the characters were great (so great that its sad there isnt more of them than this 30 minute short)

to be able to build up a world with that many characters and also tell a story where somewhat drastic changes happen, and to push all of it into 30 minutes, i just think that takes a lot of talent.

also its funny. they play with the pacing a lot. the toilet flushing every few minutes in the beginning was a delight ...

As someone who just watched this at 2am in 2020 my immediate reaction was.

"Reminds me of early Imaishi works (Dead Leaves comes to mind) but with the same lonely feelings of a world of alienation as Kaiba"

probably one of the strangest comparisons I know. I didn't get much from any of the characters other then the father. But the art, music and even premise were able to hold it up for me. My conflicting feeling is this though. If they lengthened it to about an hour (like Dead Leaves lol) i think the characters would have been done a favor and would have had ...

This is wasted potencial.

The characters could have been more likeable, if only they had a little more development, more screen time, or an origin story. They barely interact with each other and when they do it's almost never in a good way, so they don't feel like a family.

The pasing is too accelerated, there's no time for anything, not enough time to create a propper story, nor to feel the threats real and the end is unsatisfying.

Some sound effects, and the continuous appearance of flashing lights also make it annoying to watch at some points.

The character design is quite cool, but not enough as to ...
