Cardfight!! Vanguard: Legion Mate-hen

Several days after the mortal battle against Link Joker which embroils the whole world, the world has returned to peace.

But Kai Toshiki faces a surprising situation. Sendou Aichi, the hero who saved the world from the invasion of Link Joker, has suddenly disappeared. In addition, everyone's memory about Aichi is lost...Almost all hints have been lost, and Kai starts to search Aichi with "Blaster Blade" and the deck of Royal Paladin, the only existing hint and the proof of their bonds.

Kai is approached by fighters who call themselves "Quatre Knights". The four---Gaillard, Neve, Ratie and Sarah---are fighters with world-class power in vanguard fights. They control mysterious power and urge Kai to give up searching Aichi. What is their purpose...!? And what is their relationship with Aichi...!?

Kai, with the new power "Legion" in his hand, fights to take Aichi back. Now, the war has begun!

Preliminary (26/33 eps)

I watched 4 seasons without even playing the game in real life, but I do understand the rules and enjoy the fights though. We get new rule for every season, and this one is no exception. Now we get something so dazzling, which is called "Legion MATE". Okay, just the word choice is so weird, and the word "mate" is being repeated again and again whenever characters talk about Aichi - our forgotten protagonist. Well, I'm sure you will get used to it, just like I did.

Please note that this anime, or the whole series, is there for the purpose of promoting cardgame and selling ... desks in real life. People watch this mostly to know the power of cards instead of reading plain Wikipedia. Thus, the plot of the anime is not something splendid or awesome, it happens to show the cards. Although I'm saying that, I actually enjoy its simple plot. I love how they shift Kai to be protagonist now to make him gain more development, especially after season 3, where he has many problems. His problems is being showed here as well as an element to build up his character. Maybe this season is actually the first time we see him acts like a leader, a friend, and a "mate" of Aichi. We see him struggle to overcome his sin in the previous season, and his interaction with others. However, other characters like Misaki and Kamui are being overshadowed.

The Quatre Knights is not really an interesting gang, but the director at least cares to create the background for every member, though most of them don't make sense at all (Anyway, turning off your brain is the best way to enjoy this anime). As Cardfight on Moon is not magical enough, we have them fighting by Ice and Fire Power like they just come out from Sailor Moon. I don't think it's necessary at all but it doesn't hurt anyone, I guess. We also have a little plot twist with Serra - one of the Knights and Leon and Ren, which I think is a step-up from previous season that I find it rather interesting.

The art is decent enough for a long series like this, though sometime they make such silly mistake like the cards in Damage Zone change magically in the next scene. Some of the animation appears to be great when the characters summon their Ace Cards. The voice acting is great, and their screams are marvelous, I should say.

The Openings don't appeal much to me, but I like the second ending, it gives me warmth. I kind of sympathize with Aichi right now. The OST is plain boring, well, I didn't expect anything from its music anyway. Hopefully I can hear "Believe in my existence" as insert song once again, maybe in the last fight that probably would happen between Kai and Aichi.

Story: To quote Drawn Together "I am on a neverending quest to save my boyfriend" is the story this time around, it's practically filler this time around which is probably why it was never dubbed, taking all the effort and development the characters had throughout the first 3 seasons and tossing it out the window. It's incredibly predictable with its fights and doesn't have any excitement or thrill of the match.

Art: pretty standard with the series, no drops in animation or anything.

Sound: In terms of voice acting this was terrible, some of the new characters sounded painfully annoying I will get to a certain ...

It's strange that I watch this anime at all. I don't play the card game, I actually don't know the rules of the game, and I've actually skipped about half the total episodes (of the series, not the season). I've watched the entire first season and skipped the next season or two and then started watching from the beginning of this season. So if that makes me unable to review this anime as a whole, feel free to disregard what I say.

To start off, the arts and graphics are quite decent. The cards themselves are interesting because they really do resemble their ... real world (card game) counterparts. This is to perfectly link the actual market of the card game to the show, of course. The character art, however, is nothing to be impressed by. If you want better character visuals watch Yu-Gi-Oh or something. At least the hairs in that anime are awesome.

The sounds are okay as well but it's quite repetitive in music choice. The BGM isn't even that good, which is why I rate it so low. Reusing boring music is one of the things that irk me the most in anime.

And from here it goes downhill...

The story line of this particular season is just pathetic. Season 1 of this series was okay. It gave quality friendship development and excitement similar to Yu-Gi-Oh and wasn't a one-way story line. I'm going to assume you already watched the first season if you're reading this review, and so I'm just gonna say that the series was actually exciting when the main characters win some and lose some. However, in this season...

~SPOILERS HERE~
This season episode 1-6 or so was one of the main characters reawakening the memories of his allies. Okay, makes sense, they have to reawaken the memories in order to get everyone in the same boat. So, the main character awakening his friend's memories keeps winning and winning, which is normal because he's actually the best player of the card game among them. Then comes episode 7-14 or so. These episodes are pretty much about the main character groups LOSING to the enemies. One. Episode. At. A. Time. This repetitive "story line" of the main character losing makes it so that there's no excitement. I ALREADY KNOW who's going to lose by the time the 2nd main character lost. Needless to say, main characters losing over and over in a repetitive fashion is just pathetic. And now as I review, it's about episode 18 and guess what? The main characters are about to start beating the people they lost to in episode 7-14. Surprise, Surprise.

Thus, story gets a 1. Pathetic.

Lastly, if you're watching this anime before the other seasons, you might not want to. There is no character development because it's assumed that you watched the other eps. They establish the characters in all seasons prior to this, pretty much.

Some final words:
This season was not made to be an anime. If you watch the anime even a bit and then look @ the title you'll find that it's about "Legion Mate" which is actually a new game mechanic of the card game. It includes using two cards to make your main monster stronger or something like that, emphasizing the main story plot of friendship. However, the entire anime is made to advertise their new mechanics. Each player has different decks and each deck has a different Legion ("SEEK THE MATE!!!! SUGOIIIII!!!"). The linear story line of the main characters just losing over and over and now they're about to win over and over is just a poor attempt at expanding their card game (increasing profits). I am not insulting them for this attempt. It makes sense. And using your anime to ship the card game and expand business is a smart plan. However, speaking only of the anime, it is a complete failure.
